Breakaway Vocalizer 1000

Via GetLoFi. Interesting. Like a digital vocoder of sorts. Well, more like vocal processor, but still it does look interesting. Click here for a list of programs and some samples. Title link takes you to GetLoFi with some more shots and a link to one for auction.

This wonderful device was exclusive to The Sharper Image back in the 1980's. As a sales rep we were called on to 'hum' into the mouthpiece and attract attention to the Breakaway Vocalizer.

It was very expensive (about $189?) and I always regretted not buying one with the employee discount, but our first child was on the way, so it was music or diapers.

The device was marketed as a way for someone to make their own music without learning to play a keyboard or even knowing how to sing very well, since the machine seeks out the next semi-tone, you were always in tune!

I wish I could find one on eBay. Better yet, I wish there was a computer program that could mimic the features of this superb musical instrument.
