  1. Matrix,
One thing I love about this site - there's no vintage snobbery: A well photographed ion or Ex8000 is valued as much as a wall of modulars. It's just great!

(I never had an EX8000 (or DW8000) but the DW was Martin Gore's second keyboard on the Black Celebration tour (under the EII), so it must have been able to make SOME good sounds, eh?

  2. Thanks. Yep, it's all good in my book. I love all synths. One of my favorite things to do is just sit down with a given synth and see what it has to offer.

I bought my first synth, a Matrix-6 back in 1986. I bout a Matrix-6 over a DX7 because I just liked the sound of it and I always wanted an Oberheim. I bought it becaue I couldn't afford the more expensive synths.

At the time I wasn't looking for big bass, techno goodness or anything we have a tendancy to favor one synth over another nowadays. I just wanted a polyphonic synth to play and explore.

When I got my Matrix-6, I just dug in - I started programming and exploring. I distinctly remember the impact it had on me. I felt like I was creating never heard before instruments. With the matrix modulation I routed things to the ramp, tracking generators, release velocity, aftertouch, velocity and so on. I just experimented, and I "learned" how to play each patch just like I imagine I would have to learn any new instrument. I'd usually get lost in the sound, and the sound typically wasn't something I'd imagine was covetted much today.

When I played with my friends DX7, I distinctly noticed how different it sounded to my Matrix-6. In this case there was basically zero overlap and this in my opinion was a good thing.

I eventually picked up an SCI Multi-Trak and a Kawaii K4r. I spent many years with just these three synths exploring what each offered different than the other. It was awesome. Then the Internet happened and synth sites and mailing lists cropped up. Electronica took over and everyone wanted a TB-303 and Minimoog.

They sound great, but honestly what they offer is just one bit of the spectrum. Everyone just happens to be shining the flashlight on them. But, yes there is definitely something magical about how they sound and how well they do what they do.

More affordable second hand synths have their specialties as well, but they have to be discovered and they are not sought after. I find it fascinating that Skinny Puppy's main synth for example was an Ensoniq ESQ-1. I love how that synth sounds. The Matrix-6 and EX8000/DW8000 are in the same vein as well.

Anyway, not sure if I made my point, but simply put I love all synths. Each has something unique to offer, whether or not that's popular and brings up the monetary value of the synth, to me doesn't really matter. If it can be fully edited and is a full blown synth, I like it and I'll post it. : )
