Ugo Rez and Metallurgy

"Rez is a virtual analog monosynth, with a highly resonant low pass filter, that is capable of a wide range of sounds, from funky squishes, beastly basses and screaming leads, to tight arpeggiations, atmospheres, bells, and interesting effects." And... It's free.

"Metallurgy is a PC VST multi effect that is capable of providing sounds ranging from some basic, subtle, filter tweaks to twisted, complex, walls of sound that bare virtually no resemblance to the original audio. " Title link takes you there.

  1. Just got Rez 2.0 myself, and I'm really liking it. It has surprising range for a relatively simple mono synth. I'm especially liking the phaser that doesn't have to be modulated with an LFO, so it's just another sound shaping tool. IMO, more synths should treat effects as sound shaping modules rather than bland afterthoughts at the end of the signal chain. There are so many unique and interesting software effects available that I'm surprised more developers haven't incorporated those ideas into their synths.

  2. Yeah, I agree with that. If you really think about it, the only non-effect like part of a synth is the raw oscillators. Everything else shapes or processes them. I think it's more of a perceptual thing. Filter boxes are a classic example. A filter is standard in a synth and it's a standard effects box for guitar and other. Chorus was also built into some earlier Roland analogs. So, if it sounds good and it shapes the sound use it. Why limit it all to just the filter?
