That's one of Moonbase's communication consoles if I'm not mistaken.
There have been many fan ideas on why the Moonbase women wore wigs. The simple explaination is that Sylvia Anderson, who had a strong hand in the costume designs, liked wigs and thought they might become standard parts of uniforms in the future.
Series lead Ed Bishop also wore a wig for much of the series, but this was for practical reasons. The bleach used to make his brown hair blonde was damaging it.
Unfortunately Bishop and co-star Michael Billington(Col. Paul Foster) died within a week of each other last year.
ATV/ITC, the backers for the series, eventually edited several episodes together as Invasion UFO for theatrical release. They used some fast synth driven piece as the title music, and it sounds incredibly familiar, as if it was used as a theme for some tv news or sports show. I thought it might be something by Rick Wakeman for some reason, but I doubt I'm right."
so fantastic, i loved UFO when i was young. they used to show it in boston in the mid-late 70s here i think.
ReplyDeleteGerry & Sylvia Anderson also did the all-puppet 'Thunderbirds' series, as well as Space:1999 with Martin Landau. Maybe not the best sci-fi out there in terms of story and script but that had that british modern futuristic look down to a T. To this day i still am waitng for the future to look like that! ;-)

There's a fair amount of Ondes Martenot heard in the incidental music (not the theme though).
ReplyDeleteAbout the wigs, it's often been pointed out that at least one of the women character's had a change of assignment during the series, so you can see her with and without the moon wig sort of substantiating the "part of the uniform" theory. It might have even have been the future Mrs. Michael Caine, another bit of trivia. Also someone, perhaps Gerry Anderson tounge-in-cheek said the purple wigs contained electromagnetic shielding.
It was a future devoid or nearly devoid of LEDs and digital readouts.
