Philips PMC100 Tiny Portable Synth

No title link. Shot and details pulled via this auction.

"This auction is for my Philips PMC100. It comes with its original box, a shoulder strap that clips on, a set of earphones with spare foam covers, the original manual in German, and a photocopy of an English manual. There are also some other little booklets to go with it that are in German.

It is in very good condition and works well - although I must point out that I'm not really sure what it does! As far as I can tell it works fine.

It can work on either 6 AA batteries, or a 9 volt multi adapter, neither of which are included.

It has a tape recorder built into it, that enables you to save your compositions like how old computers used to work. The tape recorder also allows you to record audio.

Connection wise it has a headphone/line out socket, a microphone socket and the external power input socket.

The PMC100 has 100 instrument or "melody" voices, and another 15 "melody and accompaniment" voices.

The keyboard is touch sensitive in a similar way to the EDP Wasp.

There is not much more to say abouth the PMC really, I couldn't find much info about it on the net and I know very little about it myself. As it is portable and can be run on batteries, I did wonder whether it may be of use to circuit benders?

Here's what I did find about it on the net:

Its based on the Yamaha FM sound chip, was launched in 1986, it had a nine-channel FM synth with a 100 presets, a membrane keyboard, 8k of ram, a built in cassette recorder, and buttons for a strap. It was designed by British PC music pioneer Lyndsay Williams, who claims to have designed the first ever PC soundcard, for an Olivetti in 1987."

  1. I've got one of these things, and it's a lovely strange thing. It's got some fantastic bass sounds on it and a few rather complex fm sound fx... it does have quite a high noise level, but that all adds to the appeal for me. It has an onboard sequencer which is user unfriendly, but works, and you can back up your sequences on to tape!! You can also use the tape player to play along with (on top of) your faveourite tape... I have spampled it in a tune I called 'dexi arang' (it's been very processed and sound nothing like it started as, but it's there some where...) listen to it on myspace if you like (www.myspace.com/lukeabbottmusic)

PS i love matrixsynth, thank you!

  2. I picked up one of these in Germany a few years ago, the German manual didn't help me get to grips with it - bit like trying to learn to ride a unicycle. but wow, those fm voices are excellently cheap!
this has inspired me to dig it out again :)

    thanks!

  3. I had one of these about 5 years ago, I sold and quickly forgot it, it has about 5 ok FM sounds (THE REST ARE DREADFUL) but with no editing and a shite UI, if on a budget go for a TQ-5 or DX-100 which do everything this box does only 10,000 times better.

  6. Hey that was my auction! How strange to see that it still exists in a weird way on the web. I remember taking that picture, and the pale blue background is my kitchen table. What it dosen't say here is that the item sold for about £250! I couldn't believe it at the time, but I guess there must have been a couple of collectors that really wanted it. Not bad seeing as how it only cost me £20 a few months before! I hope I can get hold of a few more.... TJ

  7. Hi everybody,
As looked this place up for nostalgia.
The PMC held up the promise of the future.
Only drawback was that the user presets couldnt be programmed by users themselves.
    Anyway.
Loading user acompaniment modes went through audio cassette gear which in turn programmed the pmc.
Still must have some of them cassettes.
If any of you interested the ni ll post them somewhere?
