Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran

YouTube via milla202. Inspired by this thread on VSE. So is it a Roland SH-09, SH-2 or actually an RS-09? Although he's playing more than one note at a time in the vid, which would default to the RS-09, I'm seeing the SH-09 based on the knob placement. What the hell is it with people playing chords on monophonic synths?

  1. One might as well ask what's up with playing synths without any cords coming out the back...

When I saw them live in 1982, he had a pair of SH101s atop a Prophet V, and he did that whole "I'm using one finger" act with the 101s...

My guess is that when they did the video, they only had the one synth, and when they had to tour, they went nuts and bought new gear...

Often fondly remembered as a Flock of Haircuts.

  5. TV isn't real, it's an unconected sh09 (see the env sliders and OSC knobs on the right..

it is a VIDEO, so on some live events you can see them with an MS20.. so, you believe in "real" stuff on tv? still? ;)

  6. Ohhh look at the vibrato on that one note he maintains through out the whole friggin video!

I mean if it had pressure sensitive keys I could understand, but even if they were, whats with all these players pretending to add vibrato by wiggiling their finger on a note while ramming the pitch wheel up and down?

  7. I think you need to ask yourself if you would do the same. I wouldn't. BTW, if anyone catches any other synth videos where they are obviously playing them in a way that is not possible, post a comment and I'll put it up. As for gear not being plugged in, well, that's video.

  8. For what it's worth, he is at least playing in the right key. I play "I Ran" in my '80s band Pong... anybody got any wigs they can donate?

  9. There's some monosynth (SH-101) abuse in this DEVO appearance on Letterman:
