New Order live, 1984, 'Blue Monday'
YouTube via adz1962. Two Voyetra 8s in a rack, two Voyetra Keyboard controllers, Prophet 5, and Eumulator. Not sure what the synth behind her is yet. Maybe another Prophet 5? I'm guessing that's the Oberheim DMX being triggered in the beginning.
Update via ortho in the comments: "here is an article in soundonsound about the dude who tried to make this song not sound like such total shite live."

wow, just as bad as when i saw them two years later in 1986, right down to the forgotten lyrics. an impressive lack of improvement!
ReplyDeletethis should not be interpreted as a slam on their recordings, of course. many a masterpiece in their collected works.
i use to love new order, they always sounded like a train wreck live, the reason for that was they didnt play the same set each night...i use to love their whole attitude ,,,but when they put a female backing singer on their songs i knew they were going down hill
ReplyDeleteI WANT HIS HEADPHONES LOL!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm hate the toms (dum dum dum dum)... and cracked when the guy started singing and was about to use forsetto and then suddenly just go 1 octave lower... classic. "... I thought I was mistaken" line
Ohhh trusty SM57 dynamic mic... but someone should give him a pop filter. And pants... They sure have some synths though... was this when pop went bad?
The record version is actually pretty dope if you listen to it now. At least I think so. I never cared for it much in the 80's, but it was a huge hit. The timing is tight and the programming is pretty tasty. But man, I never realized they sounded so retarded live.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, more pants, please.
I know they liked a good spliff or too in their time :-)
ReplyDeletetwo
ReplyDeletenew order always looked pissed off and bored until ecstasy camealong and acid house

ReplyDeletethey liked a fair bit more than a spliff. a started chatting with a guy in a new order t-shirt a few months after i saw them. "i was at their show at the felt forum last december. they were fucking horrible," i said. "oh really, i'm their tour manager," he said. "yeah, bernard was on acid that night."
must have been one hell of a dose, is all i can think.
