Between 1947 and 1959, the future was written about, discussed and analysed with such confidence that it became a tangible presence. This is a story of weird science, strange events and even stranger beliefs, set in an age when the possibilities for human development seemed almost limitless.

Rational Youth
Thought the following was a pretty cool shot. Rational Youth was a eary 80s synth pop band from Canada, heavily influenced by Kraftwerk. Title link takes you to their website.

-ADSR envelope generator with Attack, Sustain, Decay and Release parameters and several modulation targets.
-16 presets for effects ready to play.
-Portamento/Glide control: A gliding effect that allows a sound to change pitch at a gradual rate, rather than abruptly, when a new key is pressed or MIDI note sent.
-Reverb effect built-in: Customizable with user controls for: size room, width room, damping factor & mixer.
-Delay effect built-in: Creates a delay (echo) effect on audio signals controlled by amount of feedback and modulation of delay time.
-On-screen MIDI keyboard that can be played with the mouse, or keyboard (Q is Middle-C, Z two Octaves lower) The 'T' on the left of the keyboard sets Toggle Mode where each key stays held until you click it a second time.
-MIDI Channel selector : 1 to 16 channels.

Savart's Wheel
Title takes you there. Beautiful sample of this obnoxiously putrid beast on site. "Savart'’s Wheel, designed by Bart Hopkin, is widely acclaimed for the fact that it makes the most obtrusive, obnoxious and irritating sound imaginable. The instrument is made up of a series of disks of graduated size mounted on a motorized spindle. The exposed outer edge of each disk is lined with ridged material, with ridges spaced about 1/8 inch apart. As the spindle rotates, the player holds a sort of plectrum against the ridges as they rotate past, producing some number of ridge-bumps against the plectrum per second. That frequency is the frequency you hear; it is what provides the pitch." Via Peter Grenader on AH.
