  1. well, it does seem that Roland's intellectual property has been breached many times already, I'm surprised it has taken this long. The 808 and 909 sounds almost seem to be public domain now. :¬\

  2. The sounds weren't copyrighted, the logo, name and likeness were.
    Ask Behringer.

  5. This seems really silly to me.

I am not a lawyer, but I can't imagine what grounds Roland could possibly have for this.

d16 have not used Roland's name or logo (at least not on any screenshots i've seen)

You don't need permission to emulate a product using a different technique.

Is there any LEGAL claim that can be made over 'likeness'? Perhaps with issue of trademarked logos but not front panel artwork.

Does anyone know for sure of what law they could be infringing?

Didn't Behringer get into trouble for copying patented circuit designs. That is a different scenario to d16.

I'd just take any mention of Roland out of any advertising blurbs and just say something like 'Emulates classic analog drum machines of the past'

  6. What about Apple vs. Microsoft in the big 'Windows look and feel' case?

Look and feel shouldn't count, or is that only in GUI's vs. physical interfaceS?

  8. My guess is that it's a marketing strategy!
Strangely, they've put back the original picture for the 909 clone.

  9. It is illegal to make products that look so close to another that the buyer could reasonably be confused.

Behringer was sued for their "Boss pedals" on looks alone.

  10. Interesting. The 909 picture is actually different than the original. It used to have the same color scheme as the 909. Looks like they are updating the graphics on them and the 808 will follow.

  11. Why is the Ultravox video now a chick in dance tights?
