MIDI Performance Controllers

I finally got around to reading this post in detail. Yes guys, sometimes I don't even have time to read my own posts. :( Funny thing is I read about the arpeggiator I'm about to reference on SoNiCbRaT who linked to my post. Anyway, I just realized the Akai MPK49 has a built in arpeggiator. I currently have an E-Mu Xboard49. I absolutely love the key action, size and the knobs. The other day I was thinking how if it only had a built in arpeggiator, sequencer and more, it would be perfect. Why should a MIDI controller be limited to just the tactile? It would also be obviously cool if you could save your sequences and patterns. What else would you like to see in a MIDI controller? I think my list would start with the following:

- Arpeggiator as powerful as the Oberheim Cyclone and/or Techno Toys ARP-X8 with the ability to mute steps like the MicroKorg.
- Multi-track, 16 step, step sequencer. A minimum of 16 tracks - one for each MIDI channel and or different CCs.
- Per above, the sequencer would definitely need to support CCs and not just notes.
- Multi-track phrase sequencer/looper - same number of tracks as above

What else?

  2. Hey matrix I think you mixed up sequencers and controllers.

If you want those features there are a few sequencers out there, and you can connect them to your controller(s) of choice.

Yep, his hit counter is more important than your content!

    Feed that ego!

  4. I need a midi keyboard with an advanced "constrain to scale" option built in.

  6. Jb,
    I love this site!
Just not for the same reasons you do.
What other synth sites are there that allow comments and are run by nitwits?
Tell me and I'll visit them.

  7. There are many units that could be used to arpeggiate MIDI notes. Some cheap hardware arpeggiators I use are the Roland D2 or JX-305 or any MC series higher than 505, E-MU P2500, Yamaha Motif series, etc.

The reason cheap MIDI controllers don't have this capability is because they have little sequencing/processing/memory power. If they had more, they would cost as much as a full synth. :-)

  8. Hey anonymous, i guess i understand, but i wouldn't be able to separate the content from the creator like you do. That means i appreciate Matrix's dedication and overall ethics (nd tolerance I'd have to add). I wouldn't mind if he made a living from the web hits, and I'm sure he doesn't even come close, so what's the beef?
As far as other sites, there aren't really any other ones that are quite as good as this one, that's why we're both here, so why can't appreciate that?

  9. I know who the anonymous troll is. He's a loser and confined to anonymous posting. He is banned from this site. That said, just ignore him. I can remove the comments as well, so know that I leave them up as a reminder to him on how he is a loser. Think about it. Who would come back to a site they can't stand and waste their time posting anonymous comments like this? A loser. the guy is a fool and I'm sure everyone knows it.

That said, regarding a hardware sequencer, that's the point. I don't want a separate box taking up space. I want it in the keyboard controller. I think Akai's arppegiator is a great first step.

Anyone remember the Waldorf geko devices? Those were pretty cool. I believe there was an arpeggiator, chord gecko and one more. There was also the Oberheim Strummer that let you mimic guitar strums. There's the 303 style accent or glide in some sequencers as well. Now instead of all the different hardware devices, imagine one in a single keyboard. As for software, again, it's about ease of use. Sometimes I don't want to boot the laptop and route things.

Another interesting thing would be if all racks had a MIDI control section up on top where you can select MIDI channels, synch, etc without digging into menus. Performance oriented gear basically. Now it's like the performance controls are limited to editing a sound rather than editing and creating performances.
