More Info on the Nord Wave

Via Yoozer on this VSE thread:

"It's got an USB connection on the back. From what I understood, it should be able to act as a simple MIDI controller using that, but the main reason is of course to hook it up to transfer the waveforms.

Someone at the VintageSynth.org forums tried to make an argument on how every VA wasn't modeled but used samples (yeah - long story). I can happily say that this is not the case . The guy I spoke with was one of the engineers (as opposed to someone who does just demos. He was surprised (and delighted) that someone asked this question - as the Wave handles samples not like you'd think. One of the advantages is that you can play whatever you sample over the full range, without artifacts - and this is because the sample file is resynthesized for use in the machine. Everything's generated, no lookup tables!

The memory's about 2 megabytes, non-volatile. Maximum number of waveforms is limited by the display; 99 choices. I said he could expand it by using hexadecimal . The machine's quite ready for release, albeit that there was only one at the stand. In terms of sound it's between the Nord 2 and the 3. On-board effects include EQ, tube simulation, and delay and reverb.

There's no endless rotaries, because several users wanted to know "when they reached the bottom" so to say - that the physical knob would tell them when to stop - so they chose for regular pots."

  1. That's not VSE there buddy.

  2. wow. 2 megs ram. that is not good.

also, there is no zero. that's just a reference point on an arbitrary scale.

faster than light travel is not an upper bound

nor is going slower than stopped.

things get really weird when you go slower than stopped.

but you can only do that with endless rotary controllers.

  3. If you read the entire thread there's another report that it features 64MB of flash RAM that uses 5:1 compression of samples.

  4. My busy schedule of blog trolling doesn't allow me to read much beyond the intro. Modern writers should know this and put all key facts in the appropriate CSS tags. Blink tags should be used with abandon.

    Compressed samples you say? mp3ish?

    I'm sure that's good!~?!??

  5. Sit back deep into the velvet of knowing.

    Feel it.

    Deal with it.

    Its OK and you're fine.

  6. It is not a sampler, although it can be used as a sampler... but the user is supplying WAVEFORMS... they are more like user-created osscilators than a sampler.

  7. I saw no audio inputs, so I doubt this can be used as a sampler.

    Maybe a RAMpler.

  8. I've been Matrixed!!!!! I'm so proud.I never thought it would happen.I'm famous now!Picking up women bars ceirtanly should be a lot easier now.I just casually mention it and it should be a breeze. :)

For the record i NEVER claimed that Clavia or any other VA uses tables.I said they COULD do it and you'd never notice.People said you could'nt do PWM on samples.I said you could and even provided code samples on how it is done. People still did'nt believe it. What can you do ?

    Anyways i don't care anymore.I've been Matrixed. :D

  9. I have to say I really like the endless rotary encoders on my NL3 and am surprised Clavia has abandoned them. The ring of lights around the rotary encoders is also nice although the DSI Evolver method also works well (endless rotary with no lights).

This is nowhere near true. Lots of functions still didn't work at the show, including several modes of the filter, and the rep couldn't even estimate a release date.

Then what's the point? I think this is simplifying things, and we'll see more "advancement" out of the Wave part of the synth.

  11. because several users wanted to know when the reached the bottom ....

I guess they'll change their minds when they turn a pot in live peformance and the parameter jumps - or if configured to only change when it passes through the current value then nothing happens.

One of the advantages of the endless pot with the LED's is that it is easy to see how the sound is constructed.

Surley a user would know when to stop turning the pot by the sound thats coming out ?
