  1. I always think of their music as very cool video game music. I'm imagining I'm playing Gradius to this.

  2. Wow! Japanese synth gear was so awesome that even Japan's biggest synth superstars were using it! Oh wait...no they werent...

  3. They were using Jap synth gear as well...Sakamoto has a Jupiter-4 and VP-330 in his keyboard rig, and Matsutake uses two MC-8 sequencers hooked up to his big modulars.

  4. He is partially right if you consider the percent of Japanese gear vs. non-Japanese gear. Some Korg, a touch of Roland, no Yamaha I can think of (though I belive Sakamoto is or at least was sponsored by Yamaha the last decade or so and appears in their ads.)

Though I believe the other key bands on the Japanese scene at the time, Hikashu, P-MODEL, the Plastics and Ippu-Do all used predominantly Japanese synths. But still, none of these bands had the big layered sound YMO had.

Here's a picture of Hikashu's unreleased at the time 1978 self titled album with their new System 100M.

A similar picture is on "Hikashu History" an easier to find U.S. compilation of mostly live in the radio studio appearances over the years. (Tzadik TZ-7235) A warning though that lots of their later sound is sort of avant-jazzy pop, they were only synth heavy through 1980 or so. They still tour after numerous lineup changes.

Here goes a great "battle of the bands" from 1980.
