Arturia Jupiter-8V Comparison Testing

Gavin sent the following into the AH list. I thought it was an interesting insight to how the test the accuracy of their models inside Arturia. I also thought it was an interesting challenge. So far no on on AH has taken him up on it. I asked him if I could put up a post here, and he gave the all clear. If you are up to the challenge, go for it and post back.

"Been a lurker on the list for a long time and am an analog synth fanatic also. In the day time, I work for Arturia and did the filter models for the Jupiter 8V. Since alot of people on the list have a Jupiter 8, I would be very interested if we could conduct some tests against the original, in the same way we do at Arturia to verify the circuit models accuracy. I can give you details of the procedure we use and do then you can do the same. Then it will be up to the list to decide."

"I have put up on the ftp at work some measures and audio files to show a small part of what we do pre-release or after each version build to make sure everything is working ok. I also included a read me file to show some tips on how to go about matching the Jupiter 8 and Jupiter-8V. These techniques would also be used for making the original preset banks. It would be great if some people could match up some presets as well."

Here is the link to a 7M zip of the files. I also mirrored them here.

  1. long decay on fitler sweep, in unison. let hear him compare that.

these examples prove that they dont sound the same.. close but not the same.

  2. using basic waveform worth nothing.

It could be my JD990 with the srx04 playing.

What converter did you use to record the jupiter8 ? I hope you have apogee. If you use a digidesign or soundblaster, sure the jupiter8 will have the same crappy sound as the plug in.

2 years ago I find some audio files comparing the real arp2600 with the plug. I found it was pretty close . I was about to sell it... but I just checked my real ARP and it had NOTHING in common with the arturia, excepted the interface.

Perhaps the arturia plug ins can reproduce basic waveform without too much of aliasing. But they can' t reproduce all the treatments inside a real analog. Combinaisons of vco's vcf and vca are impossible to copy.

  3. The arturia is a nice sounding thing, but to compare it with the orginal, it isn't really necessary to have the original.
Just tweak the buttons and you will get sounds which you would never hear like that on a real analog synth...

  4. If it sounded good, or similar to a real Jupiter8 I would give credit where credit is due, but quite honestly this thing sounds awful, it will appeal to some, but dont believe the claims it sounds the same or similar to a real JP-8 because it seriously does not come even a little bit close.
