The Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer is a odd formant filter, phase shifter. It's very large and has a great light display.

Sonic Youth used it on the song Diamond Sea
It's so awesome you have to sit down to play your guitar!

ReplyDeleteas you might guess, it doesn't sound quite as cool as it looks. though it is rare as heck.
it manages a pretty weird sounding "repeat" fuzz and a sort of vocal wah action. the big pay off is all the light-up switches.
They should stick to drums.

A friend and I were helping a professor clean out his office closet at retirement and one of these was inside. We had a laugh at the slider labeled "formant trajectory".

The Phase II's "synth" effects are very cool from what I've heard, one such setting can be heard on The Diamond Sea, but I hear the fuzz section is just awful screeching treble, with absolutely no body to it...
They are indeed very rare, supposedly the total number of currently working units can be counted with one's fingers and toes...
Harvestman, what happened to the one you found in the closet???
I have a Ludwig Synth Phase II (one of the 50 left) and will sell it for the right price. Make me an offer.

If you get a chance to snag one cheap, buy it then patiently wait for the right buyer on e-bay or whatever.
