Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein - Urban Legend Solved

Urban Legend bit: What's funny about this is way back I heard about how the Edgar Winter Group played an ARP 2600 as a strap on keytar when playing the track Frankenstein live. I thought the notion was pretty insane considering the size and probable weight of the 2600. So when Ben sent this my way, I was obviously pretty excited. I would finally get to see it. Check it out!

Wow.
I love the bike horn accent. So let me get this straight...he plays keyboards, drums, sax, and lacks pigmentation of any sort. This guy is AWSOME! Who hasn't tried to emulate that modulated filter sweep from Frankenstein??? My Novation Nova has a patch specifically designed to emulate that sound it and I love it!

Or maybe all those synth-pop fakers just can't handle real music like this.
The weight of the 2600 keyboard is nothing to sneeze at. I wouldn't want to have it hanging around my neck for too long.

no, I never thought he had the 2600 cabinet strapped on like a back pack, but I did assume that he just put strap nuts on the manual and wore it like a few others did. I'm pretty sure he is not the first.

and yes Matrix, I don't want to make you feel bad, but how the hell you thought he could carry the WHOLE monster 2600? The fact that the keyboard is apart from the synth suggest the obvious.

What cracked me up was the way he then picks up and plays the sax with the keyboard STILL hanging there.

I'm just a simple soul, so for me, the best thing is how heavy the main riff sounds. Takes me back though - I watched this show on TV 30-odd years ago. In fact, the short version of Frankenstein was in the charts. In some ways, the prog muso-ness repels me. In other ways, I think - Wow, these guys made a mash-up of all kinds of influences, not by loading up a bunch of sample CDs, but just by playing it. And seemingly having a bloody good time too.
ReplyDeleteThe Edgar Winter Group..same lineup except for Ronnie Montrose on guitar (instead of Rick Derringer like this video) played backup to the original Alice Cooper band at the first concert I ever saw..in October 1971.
ReplyDeleteI was immediately a fan and watched Frankenstein performed several times on TV. I hadn't seen this one yet, so thanks for putting it up!
His use of the 2600 was one of the first things that initially turned me on to synths. Edgar is still cranking it out, too. I'm going to see him again July 1st weekend.
Wow! That bringd back the memories. I got to see him twice back in the day. The 2600 sat front and center of the stage. I forgot Rick Derringer was a midget.
