Navs' Modular Lab - The Clash of the VCOs!

Title link takes you to an audio test on the following VCOs:

"On test are Doepfer's A-111, Plan B's Model 15 & Analogue Systems' RS95e."

It looks like more tests are coming and there's also a free samples including FX and Drums.

  4. While I admit to being a dyed in the wool doepfer man, I can see the attraction to the plan b modules. The dry sound of the osc has a little life that the doepfer doesn't. But, that's what I like about the doepfer in part, you start with cold scientific and work your way to warm. I'm still working on the perfect banjo though. I'm afraid I'll never get close without a 200e :(

  5. I would have liked to see the Doepfer A-110 used rather than or in addition to the A-111 as the latter uses a CEM3340 chip, putting it in a different class of structure types.

Of these I like the A-111 the least. The RS-95 seems to be the edgiest of the bunch and the Plan-B the warmest.

  6. Anon #1-
You can almost nail the banjo thing with an
MS-20, seriously... An MS-20 banjo but a banjo nonetheless.
However, you can't do 200e with the MS-20.
So if it's banjos you want, save the dough and get an MS-20. If it's strange, unheard of Buchla 200e sounds you want, get a strange, unheard of Buchla 200e.

  7. Please do this more!!!
This was really helpful for me.
There should be a site dedicated to conparing modules in this way.

  8. To explain the background of the tests: I only had the three VCOs on loan for a short time and the tests were primarily for my own use to help me decide which one to buy. So, more of a document than a precise, clinical comparison. I've been sitting on the tests since December and just felt others might like to hear them. Particularly the pure waveforms. There are enough 'musical' demos out there.

Despite the compression, which was 160 mono, I think the results are pretty revealing and should give a good idea of each VCO's strengths and weaknesses.

I'll be sure to make AIFFs available for the next tests.

    Cheers, Navs.
