Gulbransen Orchestra II

images via this auction. Gulbransen Orchestra II MIDI Synth Module.

Not the best shots, but I haven't seen one of these before.

  1. I haven't. What's it like? Is it your standard issue rompler, or something a bit more special than that?

  2. Nice, that was a typo. I haven't seen one before and that's why I was putting it up despite the bad shots. I have no idea what it sounds like.

  3. Sorry - didn't realise it was a typo!

Anyway, Google is almost completely unaware of it; but it looks as though it's the synth / control panel end of a grand-piano-to-MIDI conversion kit. Gulbransen appear to have been superseded by MIDI 9 (www.midi9.com), who do the same kind of thing... Here's an installation manual: http://www.midi9.com/documents/ks_install_manual.pdf

  4. Interesting! I thought the MOOG piano bar was the only thing like that in the market. This is why I love this blog. I always find out something new. I'll put that up.

  5. Above standard..sweet strings, choirs. individual volumes for upper and lower splits, velocity.. bowed string speeds, piano, EPs, organs, bass. I use this unit with midi controlled keyboards/pianos layered. Stand alone sounds are really nice as well. Small, solid unit one of my favorites.........Rickeys

  6. I have one of these hooked up to my grand piano. It was professionally installed (pedals and all) around 1990, and after 20+ years it still works, although I hardly use it.

Mine's a little different in such that the branding says CRYSTAL by Gulbransen. (The "Y" in CRYSTAL looks like a tri-blade off a wind turbine). The font for "ORCHESTRA II-S" is different from your pics as well.

Still not much info on the internet about these. I'm assuming MIDI9 took them over as Gwenhwyfaer mentioned, but they only document the Orchestra IIP and Orchestra III in their manual. Mine must really be that old, haha.
