Admin: Issues with Firefox

Just a heads up, but if videos are hanging for you on the two second mark in Firefox, you are not alone. I've been noticing it for the last couple of weeks and it's gotten worse. The only thing that seems to fix it is to close out of Firefox and try again and that does not always work. No problems in IE and it's not just this site. I see the same behavior on other sites including YouTube directly. I've been having to watch in IE and post in Firefox. If anyone knows anything about this bug feel free to comment.

Update: Possible fix via here:

First try installing the latest version of Flash (you're behind one; there was a recent release) using this procedure to see if that helps:

1. Download this uninstaller from Adobe.com
2. Download this installer from Adobe.com
3. Close Firefox
4. Run the uninstaller, then the installer
5. Open Firefox

If that doesn't do it, try it this way:

1. Download this uninstaller from Adobe.com
2. Download this installer from OldApps.com
3. Close Firefox
4. Run the uninstaller, then the installer
5. Open Firefox

There's also a rumor going around that Java can cause this. If you'd do this before trying the above stuff and report back, I'd appreciate it:

1. In Firefox, go to Tools > Options...
2. Click to the Content tab
3. Uncheck "Enable Java"
4. Close the Options window, restart Firefox, try a video

Good luck!"

I'm trying the second option.

  1. It happens in Safari, too.

  2. Still dead set against posting links to YouTube pages in addition to just embedding the videos?

  3. (Or "instead of", come to that. Even without Flash being installed, matrixsynth is the slowest-loading site I visit on any regular basis, precisely because of all the embedded videos. Linking to the YouTube pages instead would surely not be an insurmountable inconvenience? It would give those of us with old, slow machines a far more pleasant synthpr0n experience.)

  4. it happens with other video sharing sites too, I presume there is a bug in the firefox flash plugin

  5. Few days ago I've readed somewhere via google that this could be because too much video instances opened: over 15 videos could freeze the flash plugging. Maybe a solution could be to show less entries per page (that will also make the blog loading faster).

  6. The videos on Matrixsynth have always irritated me, especially when there are quite a number of them on a page. They make the page unscrollable for some time, and then suddenly everything will jump about as the page 'catches up'. This can sometimes take as long as 20 seconds. I much prefer pictures to videos, and a link to Youtube pages and the like would be much better than embedded stuff.

  8. This is the only site that causes this hang and usually I wait a few hours or days and I come back and it's fine. I have a feeling it's not the videos but a JAVA thing.

  9. if you have only one copy of the flash player running in the browser (including other tabs) it works fine (i.e. to watch a video, go to the youtube page for the video and close matrixsynth and then come back)

    but yeah that's pretty inconvenient

  10. None of the above suggestions work.
They have been tried and have been confirmed by others as not working.

I have tried many other things like:

    - upgrading to firefox 3 beta
    - uninstalling and reinstalling flash
    with a reboot in between
    - copying the flash dll to the
    firefox plugin directory

    And nothing worked.

I have to play youtube in IE.

  11. It ain't Java; I habitually run with Java disabled (for much the same reasons as I have for being Flash-free). I still end up waiting.

  12. It fixes when I clear the Windows registry and works fine for a couple of days...

  13. I un-clicked the 'enable java' thingy and it seemed to do the trick.

At least for the time being...
