Metasonix Eurorack Modules

via Eric Barbour of Metasonix on the ModularSynthPanels list:

"Was planning to start making Euro-compatible tube modules for next year. I want to ask around about what people want to see, and I do read every serious suggestion.

One thing I do keep hearing: complaints from many Euro modular owners. They want to buy a new module--but it doesn't "exactly match" the rest of the modules in their system. They want all the modules available to look the same. Supposedly, some of the lesser Euro module makers have trouble selling a module that's black or some other color, other than plain anodized aluminum with black lettering. 'If it doesn't look like a Doepfer, I won't buy it.' Yes, it seems lame, but a LOT of people
assemble large modulars primarily for appearance!

This is a big problem with Euro, MOTM and dotcom. Less of a problem for Frac Rack owners, they don't care so much as long as things are cheap...

On the other hand, I'd like to have yellow color panels. It would look kool. And my stuff would really stand out. But I do need to sell them, and if people won't accept Metasonix yellow, fine, they won't be yellow.

Opinions are welcome."

  1. I'd say "HELLO" to the Metasonix panels standing out in yellow. My vote is to keep that great color in there. Whenever I see peoples gear setups. Those yellow boxes are easy to spot.

  2. Personally I don't care what color the module panels are. In fact I really like the Moddemod that I have that has the black and gold panel rather than the aluminum panel. I think some yellow Metasonix panels would be cool, but maybe Paul & I are alone on this. As for suggestions; I'd love the see a Metasonix VCA made with some freaky tubes and maybe a BN6 stage at the end. Or maybe you could have a switch to place the BN6 before or after the VCA, that might be interesting.

  3. optics are irrelevant imho.
    I prefer funktionality as priority.
but I like "special" stuff anyway.
designers should design their stuff the way they like it best.

  4. Yellow modules will help my Eurorack look better alongside my "Sahara" Waldorf Q!

  5. I'd like a tube based compressor / limiter. One can do a lot of really cool things with compressors but as far as I know the only one out there is made by Cwejman. I'm sure Eric would put a crazy twist on it which would make it even cooler.

  6. Yellow modules man :)
Make a waveshaper in euro format and ask Rene if you can do his ms20 like tubevcf :)

  7. Keep them yellow. The look of a module should be just as much of a reflection of the design philosophy behind it as its actual sound and functionality.

For what it's worth, I really don't think that Wowa Cwejman or The Harvestman sell any fewer modules only because they look a little different. Just because a few people complain doesn't mean that the silent majority agrees.

It would be an interesting experiment, though, if someone released a module with both a custom color faceplate and a vanilla aluminum plate, just to see if, over time, there is a substantial difference in sales.

  9. Those old guard perfectionists in color are dying out. MFB's are black; Cwejman's dark grey. Yellow is your trademark color. Roll em out! I want the an OSC, Filter and Waveshaper; a Wretch machine in my modular case.

  10. Anything but yellow would be sacrilege in my opinion. But.. I try to keep my opinion out of the blog. :)

  11. wouldn't it make more sense to weigh who would ONLY buy them if they were silver vs. who would ONLY buy them if they were yellow? dont care's dont count. that is if this is a marketing survey, which it barely is.

  12. I agree with everyone here that it should remain yellow. As rewired said, modules already come in different colors though they usually go for more bland/ darker shades. Metasonix is known for its destructive/offensive sonic and visual appearance! I'd hate to see it lay down to some people worried more about their appearance than their sound.

  13. Actually, yess all same color modules looks good, HOWEVER, Metasonix shouldn't compromise its products trademark colour for a few conservative..."?artists?"..
But why not doi8ng a bit like the Harvestman did, some black stripes and motives that links form knobs and functions, in the desing but instead of being black, why not making them yellow... like some type of warfare make up thing... which could describe pretty effectively Metasonix's unique and abrasive sound...

makes it easier to 'navigate' on a very large system : )

''i said....plug it in next to the yellow module with the hairy butt''
