You can find more info on the 258b Clone Project here.

An interesting note is that mpeake was one of the key people behind the Alesis Andromeda A6.

  1. I know it's gauche, but I prefer the 258c.

  2. There is a clone of the 258c on the way, if what I've heard are any indication. It won't have the uA726 or be standard Buchla 2V per octave response, so it's more of a hybrid, but people like that sort of thing :)

If you're who I'm thinking you are, you already know. ;)

I'm doing this for myself and sharing the results, if it's successful. I didn't expect any attention outside of the DIY forum at E-M.com, although some might wonder if I can pull this off. I'm surprised to see something about it here. I'm not building something for sale. I'm working on something as close to the original thing as is possible, for myself. If it works, I'll share the details for anyone intested. You'll obviously need to be able to do two-sided press'n'peel DIY. I already have 258c etch-ready artwork done (two-sided), but you're better off waiting for the aforementioned "c" clone/hybrid.

The "c" isn't very different from teh "b" (and the PCB artwork for the "a" through "c" are all based upon the "a") excepting slightly better CV handling, and the substitution of linear FM for Exponential (linear FM isn't special, but exponential FM on a good triangle core such as this one is an exceptional thing). Since I'm working from both "a" and "c" board artwork, I plan to leave in the "c"'s linear FM. I might mod it for 1V tracking and to replace the uA726. I made a few changes to Thomas Henry's VCO-1 (THAT IC for the expo core/waveshaper, different trimmers, etc.) so this is a big step up but should be possible. Obviously, people are watching to see if I succeed. Shrug. It's not for them.

I prefer the "b". The "c" I played with once didn't do much for me. The beauty of the 258 is not in using it as a typical oscillator for tonal music, but where it excels, in the unusual. Sawtooth core oscillators especially can't do this:

    "impart/tangent".

The "c" cannot either, unless properly modded.
