Korg DW-6000 - Baba O'Reily Patch Programing

YouTube via Organgrinder010
"One of my all-time favorite Who songs, and always a mystery to me how the intro was done. I spent an evening trying to see if I could recreate what I was hearing; to synthesize a synthesizer. It's not perfect, but I think it works pretty well for a live situation. I also tried to explain all of what I was doing, I hope it makes some sense. Tell me what you think.

Equipment used:
1984 Korg DW-6000 Digital Waveform Analog Synthesizer.
Alesis MIDIverb III with custom Delay/Chorus preset.

  1. The sound was originally produced by Townsend using a Lowrey Berkshire organ of the era. By using one of the preset percussion sounds and combining it with the metronomic automatic envelope retriggering called "reiteration" (commonly used on organ-made banjo, mandolin, and marimba sounds) which, if you just held a key down would retrigger the same sound at whatever tempo you choose via the "reiteration speed" knob. Add a little electronic space, and presto, "Baba O'Riley." Try experimenting with LFO set to control audio amplitude via a square wave and you might find a little easier patch to tame, as it lets you just play the notes while it takes care of the repetitions for you.

  3. I just posted a video response demonstrating how the Alesis Fusion can easily recreate this sound as well as the intro to that other Who classic from the same long player, "Won't Get Fooled Again"..

  4. Thanks Milo for the info! I had no idea they used a Lowrey, I just assumed it was some type of modular synth. And thanks for the LFO tip as well, however my Korg is very limited in that area. It is unfortunate that the included waveforms are so complex, because I do not have a simple squarewave to choose from.

  5. it wasn't just the lowery. townsend ran it through an arp 2600 as well...

  6. Townshend didn't use the ARP on Baba at all. To quote Pete...

"I got my ARP 2500 system just after I’d recorded the first few demos for Who’s Next. Baba O’Riley was a cheat. I couldn’t get the sequencers and mix-sequencers on the ARP under my fingers fast enough so I emulated sequencing and tape delays using the Marimba Arpeggiator effect on my Lowrey Berkshire."

The model Pete used was a TBO-1, but for anyone wishing to recreate Baba O’Riley, just pick one up the following models to do the same job: TLO, DSO, TLS, TSO 25 and HR and GAK (seems to be the nearest). Pete is using a setting called “marimba repeat.” This is different from a normal repeat effect in that certain notes are repeated either on or off the beat creating a much more complicated repeat pattern. For example the following group of notes sound on the beat when these keys are held F-G, B-C#, and these other notes G#- A#, D-E repeat off the beat creating the alternating pattern heard on Baba O’Riley. In addition, a setting called Wow-Wow is used, much like a guitarist’s wah-wah pedal. It’s not that obvious in the Who’s Next version as it’s only being used as a tone control; but in Pete’s orginal demo, the effect is used in the regular way. It’s often been reported that Pete recorded the part at half speed, making playback sound fast and frantic, and again sounds possible but it is performed in realtime.

  7. i KNOW i've seen a vid of townsend in his studio from the 70's SHOWING how he ran it from the organ through the FILTERS ( not any kind of sequencer) of the ARP.

is that quote you have from townsend a recent quote or is it from the same time as he recorded 'baba?' cuz musicians are notorious for getting things wrong about what they used and who recorded what 30 years after the fact...suppose the drug use doesn't help! hehe

  8. He used the filters on a VCS3 on "Won't Get Fooled Again" and I too recall seeing some footage of him replicating this many years later using a 2500.

    I've uploaded it here...
