"Killer DCO analogue synth. Shares the same VCD chips as the Jupiter 8 (Roland IR3109 IC ) which are great sounding, rock solid, and will likely last forever. The rackmount version on the other hand are the same filter IC's that are in the Juno 106, the 80017a which are dying left and right from old age and in need of replacement. The unique polyphonic step sequencer (doesnt output to midi and syncs to Trigger voltage) and the vintage Roland style hold-transpose that are on the JX-3P are not to be underestimated. It's a long running debate, and an annoying one.. but I'll say it anyways. I would much rather have a JX-3P than a Juno 106 any day. There's an amazing and easy Mod for the 3P (search for JX-3P MIDI Mod) that enables realtime use of the control box + midi input at the same time, and many many other features including all parameters editable by MIDI CC

"According to analog.no, the IR3109-based VCF was indeed used on the Jup8, as well as the other Jupiters, the Juno 6 & 60 and the first version of the MKS-80. The IR3109 is an operational transconductance amp, and all of the classic Roland filter designs are OTA-based.
The infamous 800017A actually contains an IR3109, so electrically it's the same. The problem with the 800017A is apparently a fabrication problem that allows metal migration and shorting between leads on the micro circuit board embedded in the IC.
As the poster noted, the MKS-30, which is the rack mount version of the JX-3P, uses the 800017A. I also know that the GR-700 guitar synth uses it too."
