Wavestation A/D display

"I've replaced the display in my new (old) Korg Wavestation A/D with a white-LED backlit generic 240x64 LCD from Hong Kong. It's much nicer than the original display. My digital camera wouldn't take its picture for some reason - it shows up as a washed out white colour - the k800i did a better job but still doesn't show up how rich and contrasty it is. I am very pleased with the results!"

  1. wow this is cool. i need to replace my WS A/D screen also..but i have this crazy high pitch sound.. i have been told replacing the backlit will not fix that high pitch sound.. any advice? thx!

  2. i used to have a wavestation a/d and yeah, the screen is rather piss poor. if i had done this maybe i'd still have it!
my yamaha tg77 makes a rather similar sound when turned on, which does not at all affect the output its just odd. i think its something to do with the power supply or improper grounding?

  3. Sorry i wasn't clear. The LCD display is making the noise, nothing is wrong with the main output. i did find a company in the US to upgrade the backlit, but in my case i will have to change the whole display according to that company... If anyone have a solution that would be cool

    thx.

  4. I've a wavestation ex with the same problem and doesn't affect the output. It may be caused by a problem in ground coupling...

  5. i posted the question on the original OP's flkr page and this is what he told me. i hope he would not mind me copy/pasting the info on matrix as i may not be the only one with that prob.

The sound is coming from the inverter circuit that is supposed to drive the EL backlight. If the EL backlight fails or is disconnected the driver circuit makes a high pitched tone that's surprisingly loud. As I no longer have an EL backlight I connected the EL driver to a 22Kohm resistor which seems to have silenced it, I've just soldered the resistor onto the end of the grey wire that previously went to the display backlight.
As I understand it, when an EL backlight fails one of the symptoms is the sound. It may go away if you replace your backlight, however, you may also hear the sound if the transformer in the EL driver circuit is faulty, this would also likely dim the backlight.
The LED backlight in my display is probably putting extra load on the power supply, one thing I've not done is figure out just how much extra. Ideally I would like to disconnect the inverter to save power and reduce sources of noise inside the WS but I don't have the guts to do it without a schematic... yet.

  6. I've just put the details of the part up in the comments on Flickr. It's a blue/white Zhongli ZL24064A6 V:02.
I'd never considered that these parts might still be in production in an improved form, particularly as there seemed to be quite a healthy market in selling new EL backlights for the original Optrex DMF5005 display.

  7. very good post, this affects a LOT of people
the inverter on my WA A/D was silenced with silicon, works fine and no soldering needed. However it doesnt fix the failing display contrast issue...so this replacement is the way to go

  8. to synx508 Please tell me how I can get in touch with the company that sells the Zongli EL Backlight,my inveerter transformer is completely broken and I cannot find a replacement for it anywhere, I am desperate. I understand the Zhongli does not use the inverter transformer, am I correct. ldharris7@verizon.net

  9. Is there anyone out there who knows where a generic inverter transformer for a backlight Lcd display for a Korg Wavestation EX may be obtained? MY inverter is broken with no chance of repair , now I am without a display> any help would be appreciated.

  10. @davejam
I would like to get that part as well.
But if you use the newer LCD display with the LED backlight (as opposed to the electro luminescent (EL) backlight) the inverter transformer is no longer needed to drive the display. An LED backlight only needs a few volts to produce the necessary light.

The inverter is used to create an AC voltage source of about 100v at 400hz from the +5v DC available on the WS power supply board, and it is this type of voltage that is required to make an EL panel produce light to shine through the LCD.

So if you're thinking of the new LCD display with LED backlight then you wont need the inverter and it can be removed from the WS completely - no whine at all. With the inverter gone, this would probably be a good place to source the voltage needed to drive the new LED backlight?

However it would be good to find out where to get these inverter type transformers as there's a couple of others in the power supply which will surely crap out at some point. As the WS seems to have nice electronics with discrete components it should be possible to replace things like caps and inverters to keep these machines going.
