Note the MoPho. This shot is recent - from AES 2008. You have to wonder what Tom Oberheim is thinking. Anyone think he'll join the fray and do something new in the synth world?

Update via yotsuba&! in the comments:
"i talked to Tom Oberheim- he's currently in the process of remaking the SEM module- just like the original, not digital, not midi, etc. i thought that would make it in the title, i took the picture this afternoon! it'll likely be released as a brand with something like "Tom Oberheim" since he can't use the name Oberheim alone. we talked about Xpander maintenance, incidentally."

Update via yotsuba&!
"it's true! it'll be noted in the electronic music magazines since there were journalists in the crowd and the AES panel was moderated by Electronic Musician."

A new Oberheim SEM.

Update: see New SEM from Tom Oberheim for all the details.

  1. Tom is probably proud that his Marion synth is living on in Daves Prophet!

  6. Remaking the SEM? Unless he has all NOS parts, it'll probably sound no better than the Semblance or Semtex. I can't wait for all the Voyager vs. MM type arguements.

  7. Just to be sure it was yotsuba&! commenting here, and not someone pulling our chain, I sent yotsuba&! a private flickr message and he replied. Unless he is playing a sadistic game on us, this is real folks. :) A new Oberheim is coming.

  8. Please tell me it's going to be eurorack or at least standalone!
I loved the Analogue Solutions' SEM clone, waiting forward for future updates.

  10. He could probably use SMT for non-critical components and save a bunch of money (and sound better) but people would freak out from looking at it.

I would too, until someone explained that through-hole and SMT components are the same inside these days! The actual resistive or capacitive element is identical, it's just in a bigger case.

Sorry for the off-topic. This sounds like a killer product. I love all the SEM on Recoil albums.

  11. Hello all,

My name is Jay aka Coppo and I am arranging the workshop for Mr Oberheim on June 3rd in Boston for the Red Bull Music Academy. I just wanted to mention that when I spoke with Tom yesterday he did mention that he would be bringing a new synth he was working on. Looking forward to June 3rd!
