Inside the Korg Polysix. Analog synths with Storage

"Bob Weigel of http://sounddoctorin.com goes over the layout of some of the more significant components in the Korg Polysix, a synthesizer which sold around 22,000 units produced from 1981 to 1983 or thereabouts. Korg simplified and cut cost in many ways on these units but they stand as one of the few fully analog (with a discrete VCO for each voice if not two) polyphonic synthesizers ever mass produced along with the Prophet 5/10, the Oberheim OBX, OBXa, and OB8, which had BOTH memory and full editing from the panel without toggling through menus etc. Later a MIDI retrofit was also introduced bringing this unit and a rather nice one I hear. Hopefully I can get mine working that I just purchased broken :-). That unit is not shown in this demo though. The MIDI board lays over the top of the CPU's and a connector actually goes into the cpu sockets and the cpu's set on the new MIDI retro board."

Does Your Synth Have Whiskers?
"As I was working on my [Hammond] M-2 I had a good view of the tone wheel generator in bright lighting. I thought that the tone wheel generator chassis was dusty but instead it was covered in whiskers. Zinc whiskers are crystalline structures that grow in the shape of a thin hairs emerging outward from a zinc surface. Studiologic NUMA
I'm guessing this is a MIDI controller keyboard only. Not much info on the Studiologic site. According to juri on the Waldorf list the physical design (think appearance) was designed by Axel Hartmann who also designed the Blofeld's look.Axel Harmann also designed the look for the MOOG Little Phatty, Alesis Andromeda an other synths. He also of course produced the Hartmann Neuron.
BTW, if you know what synths he worked on, feel free to list them out in the comments. It would be interesting to know them all.

Modded Matrix-12 Stolen

You can also reach him here."the instrument can be instantly recognized, and the mod is described in the caption ['a trip down memory lane. this is the 'matrix 12' which confused so many reviewers back in 2002 when i released Crashing the Russian Renaissance. note cyclone arpeggiator on right side, it is a monstrously powerful device for creating ostinatos and repetitive figures out of nothing. sadly, the synthesizer was stolen from me in 2007. it can be recognized by a half dozen 1/4" jacks on the back and toggle switches which enable one to either process six external signals or pass voices 7-12 into voices 1-6 for additional processing. '] it's the only one in the world modified that way, i know that because i modified all four of them and this one is unique - none of the others have toggle switches.
this one was modded by one of my collaborators with my assistance, it has _six_ jacks on the back approximately 1.5" apart from each other, in a straight line, roughly in the center of the back. above that is a row of six three position mini-toggles which allow the user to:
a-route the six synths in the bottom voice board into the six synths of the top voice board
b-do nothing
c-send line level signals at the jacks into the six synths of the top voice board.
there is no plastic plate on this instrument, the mod is clean but looks homebrewed. i never duplicated this mod, and to the best of my knowledge it never occurred to anyone else to duplicate this mod.
if the instrument is opened, it can be seen that the voice stacking option is done by running test probes with spring clips over to the hot pins on six of the voices on the stock multiple output modification made by oberheim.
additionally, the numbers for the multiple output mod have been peeled off because i had a bit of tape covering them up - in order for dan to make the mod work, he had to reverse the two banks of six jacks referencing the multiple outputs, so if you try to use them you'll find that they run
7,8,9,10,11,12,1,2,3,4,5,6"

"Yesterday was a really interesing day in a lot of ways...I started out by recording some drums for my good friend Niclas Criborn. Doing some pitch experiments and moogerfoogering. Then two friends from Västerås and brought a large synthesizer.com system for me to try out so that I would get a better understanding of how they work as I have been curious about them for years.
Sadly enough the experience left me impressed, inspired and utterly confused.
So to round off the day I thought I could make some standard films of pedals trying to show and demonstrate a bit how they work. Usually when people do this they use a drum machine or a arpggiated synth so I thought that maybe I could do something a bit different...so I recorded a little loop into a Boss loopstation of the Mellotron MK II strings and then tried that through a bunch of pedals."

images via this auction"Paia GNOME mini synth from the '70's. This unit is in very nice condition, I tested it and it works, the strip and probe seem to have no effect, trigger button does. I've had a few of these, due to the inexpensive parts used as a kit, most of the slide switches seem to be an ongoing problem, the pots are less of a problem, but some are scratchy. I wish someone offered these little noise making beauties with quality controls. Complete manual set is original, the front plate of this synth is very nice, the battery connections(2) look to have been insulated with tape , and might have to be longer. The trigger button is cheap, all in all you don't see many of these complete as this one."

The Variable Theremin Collaborative is a multidisciplinary performance that coordinates performance between participants by means of audible and visual feedback derived from each performer. The feedback takes the form of collaborative instruments, which require the performance of two dancers to function. There are two primary feedback vehicles: a theremin and video processor. The musicians -- Joe Adamik (percussion), Marina Peterson (cello) and Jesse Peterson (violin) -- will improvise, providing multiple potential inputs for the theremin.
A demonstration of this performance is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Aesthetic Technologies Lab in Putnam Hall 235. The Variable Theremin Collaborative will perform at 9 p.m. the same day in Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium. The group will also host a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 13, at the Aesthetic Technologies Lab.
The theremin is a musical instrument that relies on two inputs to produce a single synthesized tone. The first input controls the frequency of the audible output, the second input controls volume. The result of the combination of the inputs is a monophonic, highly variable linearly controlled musical instrument. In a traditional theremin both inputs are controlled by a single player.
The Variable Theremin Collaborative expands on the traditional theremin by allowing elements of two dancers' performances to be mapped to inputs on a virtual theremin. The quintessential example of this is mapping a dancer's position relative to the front or back of the stage to the volume of theremin."

I always enjoyed using my modular, but there was a quality of unpredictability that was endearing in some situations, but somewhat annoying in others. So, sometime in the last six months I picked up a used Cwejman VCO-2RM. It was a revelation. Here was a precision that I have not experienced before in this format. This module does exactly what you ask it to do without giving a few suggestions of its own."

Practical Electronics Sound Synthesizer and the Minisonic
Geoff built the Sound Synthesizer designed by G.D. Shaw featured in Practical Electronics.
"I built the Practical Electronics Sound Synthesiser featured in the February 1973 issue of the magazine. I think it was the first DIY Synth to be published in the UK. For those who have never seen this, the designers page is here (Shaw's Corner), click on 'New Stuff v Old Hat' and scroll down to the front cover of the magazine"

"An interest in the physics of sound meant that 1972 saw the design of a Sound Synthesiser. The prototype instrument is shown on the far left. Practical Electronics agreed to publish the design providing that it was made in modular form and equipped with a keyboard. The resulting instrument is shown on the front cover of PE for February 1973 and the series ran for a total of thirteen months."

"Hi. I also built the 1973 Practical Electronics synth . Added the VCF that was published later. It had a sample and hold module that is still unrivalled. There were two simple but incredibly useful differential inverter/non-inverter/mixer amps. The ramp generators are very interesting eg: one ramp through the non-inverting and the other ramp output to the inverting input- this result to osc or filter. All my modules still work. This was a well thought out design. It was of course intended as a 'sound workshop' rather than a keyboard synth. The only glaring omission was the VCF. ... also had a great Ring Modulator..and voltage controlled stereo output amps."

El Aviador Dro are an outstanding band. Their 1st ever US tour brought them to a Rhumba club in Queens in 2006 where I captured the updated sound (sans 303) of "Nuclear Si":

Recording Oberheim DX for new Criborn track.

"Today we started working on a new track for Niclas Criborns solo project. He said he wanted a slightly more harder electronic feel for the track. So I started off by taking out the Electribe and then I just felt it would be too simple...so I used the Oberheim DX instead. I hooked it up to the Roland Re-501, a moogerfooger analog delay and the sinister Sherman Filterbank MK I and then into a Urei compressor.
I think it turned out o.k.
This film was shot at my studio, Roth Händle. It is located in Stockholm Sweden and is available for sessions, or full productions. For more info please mumble by www.roth-handle.nu"

"Tomorrow Thursday will be a big day because we will be changing the power supply for the Yamaha GX-1.
But yesterday I had a wonderful swedish band visiting me in the studio. The are called the beat from Palookaville and I couldn't resist turning on the GX-1 and let Torbjörn fiddle around with the giant synth. The synth is terribly out of tune because we didn't really let it warm up but you can sort of get an idea of the textures...YOu should also keep in mind that this is the first time Torbjörn sat down at this synth. Anyways it might be of some interest...
I think he was very intrigued by the knee control...

via wire to the ear where you can find more info."It didn’t have the interesting sequencer of a real 303 but the basic sound was extremely close. With careful Midi programming (back then on Atari Cubase) you could fake the slides and accents that made the 303 so wicked."

Dubsounds Vintage Drum Player and the KORG KR-55
I previously posted on Dubsounds back on May 16, 2006. Back then it was on their MOOG Polymoog page.Recently Kris wrote into the Analog Heaven email list with links to images of three version of the KORG KR-55, the original, the KR-55B revision 1 and the KR-55B revision 2. I asked him about putting up a post and he pointed me to the source of the images, the Dubsounds KR-55 info page.
You will find more info including history, images and samples as well as sample sets for sale. To check out the samples, click on the "Listen To My Beats" button. A player will come up in which you can select the KROG KR-55, and other drum machines. A drop down with the presets for each will come up. You can select any and listen the full rhythm.
Be sure to check out the rest of http://www.dubsounds.com/ as well. BTW, for a more virtual experience with classic drum machines, also check out Audio Playground.

A very historic item, as the sequencer in the MUSE is considered the very first digital instrument ever!, designed by two engineers from MIT, Marvin Minsky and Edward Friedkin. An extremely rare piece only about 240 of these were ever made, and not typically available for commercial sale. This piece is in excellent working condition. The woodwork is also in excellent shape. As you can see from the photos, the faceplate, writing and original lights have all been very well preserved also. The unit also comes with a detailed manual. The synth has a great sound, which can be monitored both through a built-in speaker, as well as an external speaker that can be easily connected through the back. The sequencer for this item is very unique and unusual. Controlled by sliders in the front of the unit, the MUSE was designed to have the capacity to actually select notes and invent themes, as an early experiment in artificial intelligence. By adjusting the sliders, one controls how these themes develop. A very interesting compositional tool! Great for anyone with an interest in electronic music. The knobs definitely makes me feel a more rich, almost as if I could afford a Buchla. It's almost like picturing your girlfriend is Shannyn Sossamon while you're...... *ahem*. Anyways this is almost like cheating... so aside from the wiggle causing hallucinations, I'm going to assume that they're a welcome change because I treat my gear like crap and a little give on the knobs will keep them from getting bent."

Doepfer A-100 Monster Base Frame
via Doepfer, via ross.On the occasion of the Musikmesse Frankfurt from March 12 to 15, 2008 we show the prototype of the A-100 Monster Base. It has the same width as the A-100 monster case and is planned as a base frame for these. But it can be used also without the monster case. It has a removeable top cover with handle for easy transportation.
The base frame has two rows for modules available: one with horizontal alignment and another 45 degrees inclined row. The useable width will be probably 160 HP (i.e. a bit less than the monster case because of the mechanical construction). Two A-100 power supplies (PSU2) and four bus boards are built in.
Release date: spring 2008, price: still to be calculated

Kurzweil K250
"Rare Kurzweil K250 synthesizer in great condition. Included are the hard to find QLS sampling software, original stand, two owners manuals, power supply, Macintosh computer with external hard drive, floppy drive, NOS keyboard and mouse and spare computer hardware. This package sold for $12,000 in 1984. I have seen stands and power supplies sell for $250 each recently. Other features include the 88 note velocity sensitive weighted keys, 341 standard presets, 18 bit floating point resolution, user sampling, and built-in sequencer. Research this unit for all the details. The piano and organ patches are great and the piano feel is true.

"UBE based synthesizer effect. it uses new old-stock tubes to create a crazy sounding fuzz box. the effect is very lo-fi...but a gorgeous grinding sound. it makes samples/drums/casios etc especially sound really cool. My particular box is from the first run...when it had the much cooler looking gold case (now this model ships with a noxious yellow encasing). there is a hand written serial # near the power jack...TM-1 008. so if you're a collector nerd that may be of interest to you. i assume this is the 8th TM1 ever."

"Using the Prophet64-application Bassline on a Commodore 128 computer and syncing the TR-606. This particular C128 features the MOS6581 rev3-chip, quite rare on C128s but more common on C64s.
The TR-606 is modded based on Geoff Waterston mods and features, among others, an envelop that is triggered from HT and can be set to sweep BD-pitch or HH-filter.

"The Korg Interface MS-02 is designed for the purpose of connecting Korg MS-Series synthesizers with other synthesizers available throughout the world. This sophisticated signal processor greatly enhances the performance possibilities of the MS-Series. Among presently available music synthesizers, there are two different types of control system used for the VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) and EG (envelope generator). One of these systems is used by Korg and Yamaha; the other is employed by every other synthesizer manufacturer. The Korg MS-02 provides you with a way to change the control signals of one system into the control signals used in the other system. In this way, it acts as an interface so that any two synthesizers can be used together, provided that the synthesizers are equipped with the conventional input and output jacks for control voltage and trigger or gate signals."

Oberheim TVS
"OBERHEIM SEM Two-Voice with built in step sequencer. Oberheim's first synthesizer was a single-voice mini-module called a SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module). However, in 1975, Oberheim created their first compact, programmable and polyphonic synthesizer by coupling two SEM modules to a 37-note keyboard and a simple analog sequencer. This was what became the Two Voice. Oberheim achieved a polyphonic sound not yet seen in ARP and Moog gear at the time by hard-wiring the two monophonic SEMs into the compact keyboard design. In 1976 Oberheim came out with another module, the Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer (see SEM). This could memorize the control voltages of many parameters for up to eight SEM modules. When these were added to the Two Voice, Oberheim finally had one of the earliest programmable and polyphonic instruments! Released alongside the Two Voice also came the Four Voice which had four SEMs installed, and a larger 49-note keyboard. Two voices was great in 1975, and eight voices was pretty monstrous in the later seventies. But, a major drawback to these first Oberheim synths was that polyphony was achieved by having multiple modules. This meant that each voice had to be independently programmed. This also means that each voice has its own filter, making real-time filter sweeps of all your voices more than a handful! Fortunately the sequencer comes in handy for controlling each voice/module independently."

YUSYNTH EMS Diode Ladder Filter

My aim here was to design a quite faithful copy of this mythic filter while using components that minimize the burden of selecting a great number of matched transistors. This is why I used transistor arrays (CA3046, CA3096). However, because the CA3096 has become a rare part and is now overpriced, I have also designed a PCB with discrete trannies to replace it. As for all the other filters of my YUSYNTH project, I have added an input and an output buffer to adapt this filter to the input and output levels of my modular system.
I also added an input for voltage control of the resonance : everything was there in the original module but was not made available, probably because of the limited size of the patch pin matrix of the AKS/VCS3...
Because, my power supply standard is +15/-15V, I have included a power regulator IC (78L12) to convert +15V to +12V and a single transitor voltage regulator -15V to -9V (I wanted to use a 79L09 but changed my mind when I realized that this voltage regulator is quite a rare part and is difficult to source)."

Evolver vs. Freqbox

"This is a patch I came up with on the Evolver and synced it to my sequencer. Jomox M-Base for the bass drum, the snare and hi-hat are from a Roland SH-32. The Virus is used for a basic arpeggiation. Also included: Roland MKS-30 along with the Moogerfooger Freqbox oscillator thru the Moogerfooger Lowpass Filter. The Strat is thru a Damage Control Demonizer. The Korg Kaoss Pad is set to a synth patch.
For the Freqbox I patched the oscillator out into the Lowpass Filter. I tuned the oscillator to E and wrote a stepped pattern for the midi-to-cv converter which step-modulated the filter cutoff frequency. Control the voltage!
The idea for this started with the patch I created on the Evolver. It never ceases to inspire something musical and/or strange."
