From 1860 - The First Sample Ever?

"For more than a century, since he captured the spoken words 'Mary had a little lamb' on a sheet of tinfoil, Thomas Edison has been considered the father of recorded sound. But researchers say they have unearthed a recording of the human voice, made by a little-known Frenchman, that predates Edison’s invention of the phonograph by nearly two decades.

The 10-second recording of a singer crooning the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune” was discovered earlier this month in an archive in Paris by a group of American audio historians. It was made, the researchers say, on April 9, 1860, on a phonautograph, a machine designed to record sounds visually, not to play them back. But the phonautograph recording, or phonautogram, was made playable — converted from squiggles on paper to sound — by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif."

Cloud Generator Expansion module (CGX)

This is an image of the MOTM Cloud Generator Expansion module LCD being tested. Some details on the expansion module:

"* 5 Expansion jacks, comprising:
SAW OUT
TRI OUT
CHAOS CV OUT - user defined DC voltage that is 'mapped' to one particular ChaosEngine element. So it's a wiggley voltage :)
PATCH SEL IN - when a jack is inserted, a negative voltage reduces the current patch # and a positive voltage increases the current patch #. -5V will be mapped to Patch #1, and +5V will be Patch #16 and intermediate voltages mapped accordingly.
AUX CV IN - a user defined CV input that can modulate a CG parameter, ie it has the same effect as 'turning the encoder knob' of that parameter. Mapped to -5V is minimum, +5V maximum, intermediate voltages mapped accordingly. 3U wide module."

Roland MC-202

images via this auction
"This MC-202 has one mod--It has a FINE TEMPO knob, like TR-808 has. It is all working fine with no scratchy pots or sliders. The battery compartment is nice and clean. (see pics). Can run on batteries or 9-12v ac adaptor. It doesn't include the power supply --I will include a set of batteries. A word to the wise -it is much safer to use the TB-303's, 606, MC-202 with batteries as they are kinder to the electronics. If you insist on a power supply get the HFA electronics NZ made Roland replacement for $25 direct from manufacturer. This is a great sequencer/synth which is a kind of half way between a TB-303 and an SH-101. The synth section is basically a SH-101 synth, more than capable of 303-style blips and squelches, plus much more. The sequencer is actually quite powerful for what it is and not difficult to use. It has two channels, so can control a 2nd synth via CV, and importantly has controls for portamento and accent, essential if you're trying to make it sound like a 303. Syncs to TR606/626/707/808/909/303 via Roland DIN sync, or get yourself a MIDI-DIN sync converter and sync it to your "modern" equipment.

abelincoln live looper

"In continuation of my previous post on the Yada Yada Yada samplers here is an instrument that I threw together in one evening. The “abelincoln live sampler” utilizes 3 Yada Yada Yada voice recorder circuits and simple passive 3 channel mixer for the Output signals. I only went as far as summing the resistors and didn’t do anything with the powered section in the schematic. Maybe in the future builds."

Jomox XBase888 with Eventide TimeFactor Delay

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"This is an awesome sounding delay pedal! You can hear the dry signal of the Jomox XBase888 in the first section. It's great having it synced. The TimeFactor's display shows you the delay time in note values or milliseconds.

The TimeFactor is actually two delays in one. It has a mix knob, second from the top-left, that allows you to transition between two different delay times, The first delay in this demo is the "Band Delay", the second is "Reverse" and the third is a "Mod Delay". You can hear at the end how it will actually transition smoothly from one delay time to another, giving you some interesting effects. This super delay pedal also does amazing tape and analog emulations as well as a looper. Nice. bigcitymusic.com"

Void and Followed

Via Justin: "So rather than make music for myself, alone i thought I'd be a little less of an introvert and share some of my sessions. I'm going to record a track a day for the next few days. Here are the two first ones. The tracks are performed live and improvised, not to be taken too seriously :)..

Using matrix 6r, mfb synth 2, juno 60, tr 909 and the tr 606. MSQ 700 sequencer also used with the juno, akai AX-73 makes an appearance as a midi controller in the first 2 videos."

Centrifuge - Yamaha CS40M Track

via chromium on this VSE post.

Centrifuge (mp3)

"I used a ribbon controller on this track to modulate the CS's filter cutoff as I played. That's what was creating the swells throughout the song, and those rhythmic effects in the bridge.

For those interested, the bass is my Alembic Distillate for both for the bassline and the distorted melody doubling (thru an EHX tube overdrive unit). I used a Fender Strat thru a mic'd (SM-57) Champion 300 amp for the solo. Everything was recorded thru an Alembic F2-B tube preamp, and I used a Moog MF-104z for the delay effects. My audio workstation is pretty modest - consisting of an M-Audio 1814 adapter, and an older version of Cubase SX.

Thanks for listening - all feedback is welcome! I'm kinda new to this recording stuff, but I have a few other tracks up on Myspace and my homepage as well -
