Anyone catch the name of the company? Speak Piano ID or Speed Piano ID? I did a search for both and came up dry.

Update via Valerykx in the comments: "Our companies name is pianoID :) News about device you can find here - http://www.pianoid.com/teamblog"

Synton Syrinx

images via this auction

"The Synton Syrinx is one of the few analog synths to come out of the Netherlands. It's a monophonic lead synth in the same category as the Minimoog, Arp Odyssey, and Roland SH-7. But the Syrinx is pretty rare, only a few hundred were produced from 1983 through 1984.

Description
Pre-MIDI monophonic analog synthesizer with two oscillators, hard- and soft sync, pulse-width modulation, sub-oscillator, ring modulation, noise source, two LFOs, two ADSR envelopes, formant filter, two parallel bandpass filters with separate resonance controls, 44-note keyboard, and unusual pitchbender. A few keyboardless Syrinxes were manufactured during the 1990s.

Produced
May 1982 to 1984.

Approximate Number Manufactured
325 to 350.

Manufacturer
Synton, Breukelen, Holland (no longer doing business).

Insider Information
Synton founder Felix Visser was inspired to design synthesizers after purchasing an EMS Synthi-A that stopped functioning three days after he’d brought it home from London. In the process of repairing it, he analyzed the Synthi-A’s circuitry and thought he could do better. He started Synton in 1973 to materialize his concept of a voltage-controlled synth. . . . Visser was a jazz drummer who began experimenting with electronic music during the late ’60s. He owns an extensive collection of vintage electronic gear and is in the process of opening a museum called the Elektryseum in Holland.

Original Retail Price
$1,095.

Current Value
$4,000 to $6,000."

Yayaya - guitar voice - faking a talkbox

YouTube via bigcitymusic. Boots or socks?
"Here we have a Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz running into a Zvex Wah Probe running into a Malekko Echo 600D and finally into the Frostwave Sonic Alienator. The Sonic Alienator's bit crunching along with the sweeping filter from the Wah Probe gives that yaya vocal sound. Fun stuff!"

Yamaha TQ5 and Logic 8: Everything Old Is New Again

YouTube via gearwire
"French theorist Jean Baudrillard defined the term "retro" as a "demythologization of the past, distancing the present from the big ideas that drove the modern age." If you're like me, you just as much about 20th century post-structuralist thought as you do about MIDI (i.e., not much). That's why I rely on Bill Holland to help me differentiate my MIDI ins from my MIDI outs, if you know what I mean."

Políssonos and More

Políssonos from Rui Penha on Vimeo.
"Políssonos is a loop-based midi sequencer that elicits the relation between the rhythmical division of time and the shapes of polygons. It was developed in September 2007, for the month of "Music + Mathematics", in October 2007, at Casa da Música. A simple midi sequencer at its core, Políssonos is mainly a proposal for a loop orientated alternative to the traditional “piano roll” interface. Políssonos was awarded with an honorable mention at Lomus 2008 - International Music Software Contest."

Note the desktop Prophet-5 minus keys in the background and the Minimoog's knobs.

"The Beatles used a Mellowtron prominently in "Strawberry Fields Forever"

The heart of the instrument is a bank of magnetic audio tapes. Each tape has approximately eight seconds of playing time. Playback heads (underneath each key) enable the playing of pre-recorded sounds."

Casio Rapman RAP-1 Sample Kit

Samples, pics and thoughts on The Midi Mechanics Showroom

"The Casio Rapman is probably the most bizarre of all Casio toy keyboards from the 80s and 90s. The RAP-1 is the first of the two Rap-themed keyboards from the big 'C' and was released in 1991...

The two main features of this fun little machine are the neat pseudo-vocoder effect and the surprisingly good drums. You can either trigger kick, snare and cowbell yourself with little orange rubber-pads or play 25 pre-programmed rhythms and create wacky breaks with a scratchweel. Some of those beats even come with a funky bassline and sound like they were pulled from some lost "Prince of Bel Air" soundtrack or a never released Vanilla Ice comeback album... Wouldn't it be nice to have those sounds on your MPC or Machinedrum or load them in Battery?"

Duran Duran and the Prophet-5

Duran Duran - Their First Live TV appearance 1981

YouTube via Blockbuster9002. Sequential Circuits Prophet-5. Anyone ID the second synth? I'm guessing the Roland Promars.
"Another gem from Block's tape archives. Here is Duran Duran performing Careless Memory on the BBC Midlands TV show Look Hear! March 10th 1981. They played 3 numbers in total but I've just put one of them up here for you to enjoy."

Duran Duran - Planet Earth (Night Version)

YouTube via samegirl.
"1981 The Night Version video with lots of fabulous New Romantics"
Some brief synth shots in this one.
Just a couple of videos inspired by AnalogSuicide. It reminded me that their first synth of choice was actually the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, not the Roland Jupiter-8 which came later.
