MIDI Step

via this cl listing

Not the best shot, but I've never seen one of these before. Anyone know who made these? Update: Hammond according to EmptySet in the comments.

"Its just a controller, it doesn't actually generate sounds."

via J

Update via electrongate in the comments:
"The MIDI Step was originally designed by Fast Forward Designs. I think Hammond Suzuki did the manufacturing for them but I believe the MIDI Step was sold by F.F.D. (marketed by Russ Jones).

So you've never heard of Fast Forward Designs? This was an engineering firm started by Marcus Ryle and Michel Doidic (ex-Oberheim engineers) who later went on to start a little company called Line 6."

Audjoo Announces the Release of Helix

"San Francisco, CA, November 13, 2008

Helix is a new software synthesizer and the first product from Audjoo.
Over two years it has been developed with the demanding sound designer
in mind, but is easy enough to use for any synth enthusiast to enjoy.

Helix introduces a new oscillator type combining the concept of
wave-shaping with wave-table synthesis, in addition this oscillator
also allows for up to 16 x unison similar to a super saw, but for any
waveform. Great care has been taken to ensure no aliasing in the
oscillators, so the sound is free from many artifacts traditionally
associated with software (and virtual analog) synthesizers. Each of
the 24 voices is made up of four oscillators, three filters and three
distortion/saturation stages.

Key features include:
* Low CPU usage
* 1000+ presets (from BigTone and others)
* Up to 64 x Unison per voice
* Semi Modular Architecture
* Unique Wave-Table-Shaping oscillators
* 17 filter types (3 per voice)
* 10 distortion types (3 per voice)
* All stereo signal path
* Deep Modulation
* Arpeggiator
* 7 Built in effects (Distortion, Chorus, Phaser, Delay, Limiter, Reverb, EQ)

Helix is available for purchase immediately as a download from
www.audjoo.com for $149, excluding local taxes where applicable. It
runs in VST-host on OSX or Windows. At the web page sound examples and
a trial version is also available."

Moog Taurus 1 Analog Bass Synth Pedal SN 2873

via this auction

"SERIAL#2873
Moog Taurus Description:
The Taurus is a specialized monophonic bass synthesizer using two audio oscillators with glide, two contour generators, and a VCA, coupled with the famous 24 db Moog low pass filter. The Taurus has three programmed voices and a voice that you can design from scratch. The Taurus is a variable synthesizer that features two audio oscillators to create phasing effects, parallel intervals, and rich percussion sounds. In addition, functions like glide, decay and pedalboard octave may be switched by foot during performance. And its five octave range makes Taurus more than a bass instrument. Of the 3 models of the Taurus Bass Pedal Synthesizers made by Moog, the Model 1 is considered to be the most desirable. It sounds fatter and has more presence than version 2 and 3 [anyone know more about this 3rd model?]. It was nicknamed the Mini-Moog for your feet because it has very similar filters to the prestigious Mini Moog.

MOOG TAURUS 1 Features:
Three pre-programmed synthesizer voices: Bass, Tuba, and Taurus
• One fully programmable voice. You create the sound and pre-set it yourself.
• Five octave range 16' 8' 4' 2' and 1'
• Foot sliders for loudness and tone color variation.
• Ultra stable oscillator design: less than one cent (0.06%) short term drift, less than two cents (0.18%) long term drift.
• Electronic preset selectors. Presets never have to be cancelled.

MOOG TAURUS 1 Presets:
TAURUS - the classic moog taurus sound with pulsating oscillators
BASS - bass sound with fast decay filter sweep
TUBA - simple bass sound, one VCO only
VARIABLE - user-created patch
Polyphony: Monophonic
Oscillators: 2 VCO's
VCF: 24 dB/oct lowpass w/ cutoff, emphasis, A/D envelope;
VCA: Attack, Decay, Sustain;
Keyboard: 13 note pedal-board"

Update via TJ: " There might have been a third. The Taurus II models were the 343A synth brain with the same innards as the Rogue, coupled with the 343B pedal unit that gets it's power from a 5 pin DIN cable. The 343B had a threaded sleeve in the center for attaching stand between the pedal and brain.
There was also a stand alone pedal that might be the third model? The 343C used the same AC wall wart as the Rogue and Taurus brain, but had no threaded sleeve in the center and had outputs for pitch CV, V-trig and S-trig, along with a scale and range trimers. The logo on the unit clearly reads "Taurus II Controller" I have seen a Moog ad for these, it was basically a Taurus II pedal without the Rouge brain. As far as not sounding as good as the original Taurus depends! I have mine hooked up to a 1969 Moog Modular System 1P. With three 901 oscillators, the 904a filter and 907 filter bank and sequencer, the bass can shake the floors and rattle the windows! YMMV."

"Sometimes named the Poly Ensemble or K-5 or even Poly Synthesizer (named so on the front page of the service manual). These synths were built from 1976 to 1979/80... very early model, this may be of little interest to a musician, but any collectors or synth historians will notice the naming used on presets 1 & 2 (‘Reed Wind #1 & #2’ rather than ‘Organ #1 & #2’ and the older style knobs (ie not MS-20 style knobs found on the later ones)...

NORD ANNOUNCE NEXT-GENERATION ELECTRO, ELECTRO 3

via Sound Technology
"Nord and UK distributor Sound Technology are very pleased to announce the next generation Electro - the Nord Electro 3. With the introduction of the Nord Electro 3, the legacy of the original Electro and the knowhow that have shaped some of the other Nord models have been combined. The Electro 3 features a new organ section, a new piano section, new effects and also a new exciting feature that allows the Electro 3 to use any samples from the Nord Wave library.

New and improved features
● Load any sample from the Nord Sample library
Users can add virtually any sound they want to the Nord Electro 3. Sounds can be loaded from the Mellotron Library or any other instrument or sound from the extensive Nord Sample Library, the same format as the Nord Wave uses. Users are even able to create their own Sample Instruments using the Nord Wave Manager and then use these in the Nord Electro 3.

● Exquisite new pianos
The Electro 3 uses the same sample format as the acknowledged Nord Stage, to take full advantage of the Nord Piano Library’s multitude of velocity layers, pedal-down samples and extremely high quality samples with unprecedented expressiveness. Any current or future piano that is available for the Stage family will also automatically be available to the Nord Electro 3.

● Increased memory capacity - 8 times the size of the original Electro
The Nord Electro 3 has a memory for pianos and samples of 256 MB and can it can store 126 programs.

● Second generation organ emulation
The organ section is a direct descendent of the award winning Nord C1 Combo Organ with its fabulous vintage sounds from the B3, Farfisa and Vox-type models. Each and every individual sound creating component and even the artifacts of the original instruments have been faithfully reproduced in the Electro 3.

● Brand new effect section
The Nord Electro 3 is equipped with a great selection of high quality effects including a lush sounding reverb with five different algorithms. There is also a selection of tremolo, panning, wah-wah, phaser, flanger and chorus effects.

● New amps, compressor and EQ
Users can sculpt their final sound by choosing from a selection of three amplifier simulations that can add any amount of grit and distortion from gentle to manic levels. A three-band EQ with sweepable mid-range and a compressor can be added to the final stage of the audio path.

● Enhanced Rotary speaker emulator
The rotary speaker emulator also originates from the Nord C1 Combo Organ, with its acclaimed sound quality. This rotary speaker emulator incorporates the acoustic variations that occur when a physical speaker spreads the sound in a room, providing the full experience of when the air is moved around.

The Electro 3’s rotary also features a brand new function in the addition of the Rotary Stop Mode. This allows users to switch between fast and stopped rotation and back again by using either the controls on the panel or with a foot pedal connected to the Rotor Pedal input. This is a crucial functionality that mimics the behavior of early one-speed original rotary speaker units.

● Play along to music with the Monitor Input jack
Just plug in your mp3 or CD player to the Electro 3 to be able to play along, rehearse or jam with previously recorded music without the need of an external mixer or sound system. The signal that is present at this input will be monitored through the Electro 3’s headphone output.

● Free Electro Manager application to manage the memory areas
The content of the pianos, the samples and the program memories in the Nord Electro 3 will be managed by the Nord Electro Manager. This application will be available for free to Electro owners, and compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OSX.

● Increased portability
The Electro 3 is slimmer and lighter than the original Electro.

The Electro 3 comes in two sizes, a 61 and a 73 key version with semi-weighted waterfall keys.

Nord Electro 3 will ship in the UK in December 2008 priced at £1399 and £1599 RRP inc VAT for the Electro 3 61 and Electro 3 73 respectively."

New Akai EWI USB

"NEW EWI BRINGS WIND-INSTRUMENT EXPRESSION TO ANYONE

EWI USB Delivers Full Electronic Wind Instrument Functionality at Attractive Price

Cumberland, R.I. (November 5, 2008) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces EWI USB, its latest wind controller, is now shipping.

EWI USB enables anyone, regardless of wind instrument-playing experience, to perform with the expressive capabilities of the wind instrument of their choice. The wind controller features a plug-and-play USB interface for use with the included Aria software with Garritan and Akai Professional samples as a sound source. EWI USB is Mac and PC compatible.

Professional players will find EWI USB fully capable of performance for stage and studio with a five-octave range, breath modulation with adjustable threshold, pitch bend, adjustable vibrato, transposing and octave shifting, and fingering modes to emulate various electronic and acoustic instruments. Further, the Garritan/Plogue Aria software enables instrumentalists to perform with up to four instruments selected from the full collection of over 75 orchestral, band and synthesizer sounds.

While EWI USB has full professional capabilities, its attractive price point and easy-to-play design make it a perfect choice for wind students. With a removable, dishwasher-safe, interchangeable mouthpiece that does not require a perfect embouchure, EWI USB is excellent for introducing students to the world of wind instruments. Multiple fingering modes make EWI USB model saxophone, flute and oboe, as well as traditional EWI and EVI trumpet for intuitive performance, even for players who have never picked up an electronic instrument.
· “With EWI USB, we are exposing the world of wind-instrument expression to a whole new world of players,” states Gregg Stein, Director of Marketing, Akai Professional. “Traditionally, electronic wind instruments have fallen into two categories: very expensive professional instruments, and inexpensive instruments of low quality. EWI USB is the first instrument to offer professional quality at such an affordable price.”
· EWI USB is now shipping to musical instrument and pro audio retailers. Available for $499.00 MSRP.
· Garritan/Plogue ARIA is a registered trademark of Garritan Corp.

JoyKontrol

via Seb's Synth-DIY Page where you will find more info.

"Too many knobs to tweak? Ever wish you had more hands? The JoyKontrol allows control of up to 12 parameters with just 2 hands! It has both analog CV outputs and MIDI output.

Each joystick is 3-axis (X - left/right, Y - up/down, Z - anti-clockwise/clockwise) and the MIDI output can be configured to send a different controller message for each direction of movement. This allows up to 6 different MIDI parameters to be controlled from a single joystick. (Keeping things purely in the analog domain there are 3 CV outputs per joystick.)

The joysticks used are hall effect devices, so there's no pot tracks to wear out (it's all done with magnetic fields). They are typically used in industrial control, wheelchairs, etc. so they are very rugged - perfect for some hardcore tweaking!

The analog CV outputs go from -5V to +5V, centering at 0V. The MIDI side of things is completely configurable:
* There are 5 settings memories.
* Each axis of a joystick can be configured to send a single MIDI controller, pitch bend, aftertouch or program change message, or to send a different MIDI message when moved in each direction.
* The DATA knob can also be configured to send MIDI (and the sent value is displayed, so this is useful for example for program change messages).
* The range of the sent MIDI values is configurable, and the minimum value may be greater than the maximum value to invert the polarity of the output.
* When editing, the controller type and minimum/maximum values can be 'learned' from the MIDI input."

OB-VFD Oberheim Matrix-12 and Xpander Display Replacement

via Bendon Sound Technology

"The Oberheim Xpander and Matrix-12 each use three 40-character VFDs (Vacuum Fluorescent Displays) to communicate with the user. VFDs have admirable brightness and contrast and the majority of units are still working well after more than 20 years.

However, for a couple of reasons there is a small but growing minority of owners suffering from display problems which either degrade or, at worst, prevent use of their instruments...

There has been much discussion about the integration of modern VFDs into the Oberheim synths, but to do so presents many technical difficulties, primarily caused by the very different data interface fitted to the modern displays.

I am pleased to say that these issues have now been overcome here at Benden Sound Technology. My OB-VFD upgrade utilises three Itron DN4015B displays - closest in dimensions to the original parts - and a microcontroller-based interface which accepts data directly from the Oberheim main board and parses it into the serial data stream required by the display modules. It also converts the original starburst data into smoothly-defined 7x5 dot-matrix characters."

New Model 285e FREQUENCY SHIFTER / BALANCED MODULATOR

"This module is the e series reincarnation of the 285. A long time coming, but well worth the wait.

The top section performs frequency shifting; up and down outputs are simultaneously available. The reference frequency can be externally applied or internally generated; the later can be voltage controlled and f.m. modulated.

The bottom section is independent, and functions as a balanced modulator of applied signals. The degree of modulation is voltage controlled, and the reference frequency can be internally generated or externally applied, as in the frequency shifter. A separate output is dedicated to classic ring modulation, a subset of balanced modulation.

All settings of the 285e can be stored and retrieved with the 225e or the 206e preset manager."

http://buchla.com/series200e.html

New Model 206e MIXER / PRESET MANAGER

"A six input, two output mixer with controls for level and stereo location. Two of the locations can be voltage controlled; the remaining four can be continuously panned.

A preset manager is also incorporated, primarily for those who want a second preset manager (for a second cabinet), but find a single MIDI interface sufficient.

Please consult the 225e description for a rundown on the Preset Manager section."
