Synthesia - Open Synth Hardware Platform

"The synthesia platform is a project whose purpose is to create an Analogue modelling musical synthesizer; that is, a synthesizer implemented using both analogue and digital components that intends to emulate the sounds of traditional analogue synthesizers, whilst being controllable through modern-day digital protocols such as the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI).
The synthesizer platform exists upon it’s own standalone hardware, and may be controlled using a variety of existing MIDI-capable instruments, including keyboards, guitars and drums.

You can find more info at http://synthesia.sourceforge.net/. Also see these prior posts.

"Sounds of the roland saturn 09 for www.vintagesynth.com forum member Ryan the Monolith. I paid $150 for mine. It's in excelent condition and I consider $150 a fair price. It can be much more flexible going thru a filter. I think there's a little problem with the chorus(6:40)."

Moog 301A

via this auction
"Many items on EB are dubiously described as "rare" but we believe this one genuinely is. A Moog 301A synthesizer amplifier. 400 watts. This monstrous amp weighs about 50 pounds which accounts for the high shipping cost. It works but it has not been "restored," i.e. if you want to replace the flux capacitors or undertake other similar activities please do so but we have not done so. Cosmetics are reasonably OK considering its age. We have had it for about 10 years and only used it in our non-smoking studio. It is not a "modern" amplifier but it is a genuine relic and would perfectly complement your other Moog equipment."

Hong Kong In The 60s - Xmas Synth Music

You can find a free Xmas mp3 by Hong Kong In The 60s on last.fm, here.

"It was made with a Casiotone MT-68, a Casio SK-1, sampled Korg Minipops 7, acoustic guitar, sleigh bells, fire and voice."

"In the pic we're playing live with a Casiotone MT-68 and a VL-Tone.

Specific detail about the song:
The theremin-style section towards the end of the song (where vocals come in) is a good example of the SK-1's great portamento function, which I think is under-appreciated. The oom-pa-pa bassy organ sound that occurs through most of the song is provided by the Casiotone MT-68, and the lead pling-plong melody is the MT-68 with its fantastic modulation settings applied to the sound. There's also a quiet arpeggio throughout the song which again was created with the MT-68's modulation settings applied (plus some external wah/phase).

Percussion is from a sampled Korg Minipops 7.

The MT-68 is I think one of the greatest keyboards ever, and all of our songs feature it. (http://www.myspace.com/hongkonginthe60s)

Best wishes,
Tim x"

KORG Kaossilator Pink

"Korg introduces the Kaossilator Pink Limited Edition.

The Kaossilator is a dynamic phrase synthesizer and comes packed with 100 sound programs that combine Korg's modelling synthesizer engine with effects from the KAOSS Pad series. Its horizontal axis is assigned to note/pitch, while the vertical axis is assigned to parameters such as: cut-off, feedback, or modulation depth, giving you a wide range of performance possibilities. In addition to classic synthesizer sounds, there are faithfully simulated piano, guitar and trumpet sounds as well as looped and one-shot drum sounds.

The Kaossilator offers you a choice of 31 different scales, including chromatic and diminished, as well as major and minor blues and pentatonic scales – by using the key setting function, you can play them in any key. In addition to the standard western scales, Korg has included a few more exotic varieties such as Spanish, Ryukyu, and Raga. It also includes a Gate Arpeggiator which enables you to produce specific patterns of notes in sync with user specified tempos, and a Loop Recording function allowing you to record a phrase with a specified number of beats to a maximum of two bars (or measures) and add layers to it.

This Pink Limited Edition will be available soon at approximately $300."

* In August, I shot an interview with musician Chris Wild aka Igor Amokian. He talks about how he developed an interest in circuit bending, discusses the mindset behind it, and demonstrates several of his toys on camera.

This is Part One of a 40 minute interview, which is interspersed with live footage from a show Chris performed with an experimental jazz ensemble named Skyline Electric at Little Joy Bar @ Echo Park.

"Here's how my modular synth looks today - I finally finished enough working modules to fill all the slots."

the harvestman evin 209

"4x4 matrix mixer and bipolar feedback grid

Evin 209 provides four different mixes of four signal inputs. Each output row can be switched between unipolar (zero to max) and bipolar (negative max to zero to positive max) mix behavior. The module is DC-coupled so that you may also mix control signals this way.

An expansion header is also provided on the rear of the module. It currently connects to a m'79 Stilton Adaptor for true Feedback Console operation (the inputs and outputs of each module are normalled together, so a complex mix of a four-pedal feedback loop can be finely tuned). This header will also allow expansion with any other Feedback Console devices to be designed, such as VCAs or envelope extractors."
