Liquid Sky

via vito:
"I´ve recently saw this beatufil movie called liquid sky, something of an 80´s odditie. I´ve searched for it in your DB without success.

The soundtrack is entirely Fairlight CMI. It also features this beautiful ode to the drum machine - "me and my rhythm box".

there is a myspace with the songs

here´s more info, including the rhythm box performance scene" [link]

[Both roles played by Anne Carlisle!]

Me ... me and my ... me and my ... me and my rhythm box ... me and my rhythm box ... are you jealous fox? (folks?) are you jealous fox? ... my rhythm box is sweet ... never forgets the beat ... it never eats ... it never shits ... it never sleeps ... it only beats ... it's always high ... so am I ... do you wanna know why? ... it ... it is ... preprogrammed ... so what ... so what ... so what ... who of your friends is not? ... who of your friends is not? who's not?"

  3. Oh yeah man Liquid Sky is definitely unique. The "me and my rhythm box" scene where she has a CR-78 strapped to her is so classic. It inspired one of my favorite Phoenecia tracks "Rhythm Box" (from OddJobs) where there are little vocal snippets of Adrian singing:

The band Adult. also did a 'cover' of "me and my rhythmbox" which features the original drum-fill from the movie and is generally smokin as well. I can't remember what album that track is on though.

  4. oh here's where that Adult. track came from:

It's the Phoenecia OddJobs Discrimination remix one with the cow on the cover.

  5. I remember seeing that fall of 1982, during it's first theatrical run (as far as I know)

    "Me and my rhythm box"

    Between that and "Blue Monday"

The world was never the same for me ever again.........

and in 1982, some of those Fairlight sounds where blowing my mind- in that movie as well as in "Mondo New York"

  7. Thanks for the Adult mix post.
When I met Romulo in 1994, my parter in the Schematic and our band Phoenecia) we had both sampled Liquid Sky and made songs out of it, but never released them. We thought it was just a nice coincidence but years later we took it seriously and made a proper track (and subsequent release out of it). This is the result: http://schematic.net/jeswa/ scroll and click on "Phoenecia - Odd Job (Rhythm Box Version)". When we played a festival with Adult at the Paraidiso in Amsterdam we realized how much they sounded like the original band in Liquid Sky so we asked them to do a mix and the rest is (rather obscure and completely referential) history.

  8. Wow, thanks for the background Josh!

That Odd Job 12" of mine (w/ the meat on the cover) has had some serious wear over the years. This thread caused me to revisit all my Schematic stuff. You guys really had a hot aesthetic goin there; some of the most intricate and evolving patterns, yet bootylicious and bangin. I think Phoenecia had the most flavour of that era.

Anyway it was always difficult to spot your influences and it's interesting that Liquid Sky would be one of them.
