Oh yeah man Liquid Sky is definitely unique. The "me and my rhythm box" scene where she has a CR-78 strapped to her is so classic. It inspired one of my favorite Phoenecia tracks "Rhythm Box" (from OddJobs) where there are little vocal snippets of Adrian singing:

The band Adult. also did a 'cover' of "me and my rhythmbox" which features the original drum-fill from the movie and is generally smokin as well. I can't remember what album that track is on though.

ReplyDeleteWhen I met Romulo in 1994, my parter in the Schematic and our band Phoenecia) we had both sampled Liquid Sky and made songs out of it, but never released them. We thought it was just a nice coincidence but years later we took it seriously and made a proper track (and subsequent release out of it). This is the result: http://schematic.net/jeswa/ scroll and click on "Phoenecia - Odd Job (Rhythm Box Version)". When we played a festival with Adult at the Paraidiso in Amsterdam we realized how much they sounded like the original band in Liquid Sky so we asked them to do a mix and the rest is (rather obscure and completely referential) history.

ReplyDeleteThat Odd Job 12" of mine (w/ the meat on the cover) has had some serious wear over the years. This thread caused me to revisit all my Schematic stuff. You guys really had a hot aesthetic goin there; some of the most intricate and evolving patterns, yet bootylicious and bangin. I think Phoenecia had the most flavour of that era.
Anyway it was always difficult to spot your influences and it's interesting that Liquid Sky would be one of them.
