MacBeth 3U Modules

Three images and some notes sent my way via Ken MacBeth.

"- Hi Gentlemen! Well over the weekend a fair bit of work. Everything that I have wanted to implement into the dual osc is working fantastically!
I have attached some pictures for you to get an idea of how the style of what I'm doing will look. This is the Dual Oscillator- it has the two oscs- but also a genuine (not AD633 analogue multiplier IC) balanced modulator configured as ring modulator. This design is based upon early ring modulator designs common in synths from the very early 1970s. I also thought it would be neat to have an all transistor noise generator- it gives both pink and white outputs. All in all a versitile module- a real sound maker! Study the pics to see what the controls are up too...
The photos show the final art (transparancy) attached (loosely) to the frontpanel...
The next time this configuration will be seen will be the production models. Factory production commences in around 10 days- I expect these things will shift. As I have stated- like good old BK- 'have it your way'- so color formats are an option. I'm working with Shawn Cleary at AH on this- he will give you prices if you push him! Speak to him or me...
I would like to think that I have set a precedent that will hopefully sustain, in having LARGE controls within the 3U format! Others will probably follow.

Best wishes- Ken"

  1. The Macbeth synths have really, really well designed user interfaces. Very classy

  2. Yes, cool look. I had some Macbeth prototypes and a M5N. In my opinion good shape but low quality components and a bit disordered, precarious wiring: for example the spring reverberation thank box was
fixed on thin copper wires soldered on the main pcb!!.... I think not so good. Great sound anyway!

  3. Of course a prototype would have such shortcuts. But I'd be more than a little surprised if Macbeth's production units employed low quality components or were haphazardly built. That's quite inconsistent with most owner's comments.

BTW, are you Dr. Leo Spaceman from "30 Rock"?

  4. Actually, my M3X had to be rebuilt after shipping. upon opening the unit, it was obvious the transformer was too heavy for the soldering that held it on the power supply unit. MacBeths are the best sounding synths on the planet (no doubt), but earlier units were a little fragile on the inside. I think he has a production company building these units however. Spaceman3 kicked ass as well.
