Novation Launchpad for Ableton Live

YouTube via AbletonInc

"Launchpad is a dedicated controller for Ableton Live, co-developed by Novation and Ableton. Perfect for DJing, performing live or working in the studio, Launchpad features a multi-color, 64-button grid, control modes for the Session View and Live's mixer, two fully-programmable User Modes and dedicated scene-launch/function buttons. Despite the big grid, Launchpad is neat, compact and portable: 239 x 239 mm with a slim 24 mm profile and weighing only 717 g."

  1. I wonder what the Monomoe people think about this

  2. What an innovative idea they have come up with stealing and barely repackaging. Patent infringement???

  3. Is the monome patented? Also, would a patent for a 8x8 grid of buttons be awarded?

IP issues aside, I think it's pretty sweet someone is selling those at a lower price point and higher availability than the monome (which is all but impossible for me to get).

  4. It's an interesting development--big companies letting the smaller ones innovate so they can swoop in and use economies of scale to sell a similar thing cheaper.
There's an interesting hands-on look at the Launchpad here: http://www.djtechtools.com/2009/10/01/novation-launchpad-ableton-live/

  5. I have no idea of Monome is patented but they're all about open source. If that's the case then they had this coming to them. That being said I'm sure there will continue to be a niche market for their boutique controlers

  6. True about the patent especially since they are open source. Does any of Novation's literature even mention the Monome as an "inspiration"? They could at least give credit where it is due.

  7. looks like it's cheaply constructed.

  8. It certainly looks cheaper than a monome 64. Since it's a MIDI controller, I'm hoping it'll be possible to create a translation layer to make Launchpad compatible with monome apps without needing a proprietary API. After all, mMonome itself relies on max/msp for all its intelligence.
