"Vintage Yamaha SY-2 Synthesizer - monophonic single-VCO analog synthesizer with 28 preset sounds. Editing can be done using the 8 sliders to the right of the 37-note keyboard.
Monophonic, no midi, no sequencer,
- an aftertouch (for controlling filter, volume or vibrato)
- a "pulse width" and a "tone bend" which is perfect for funky aggressive bass lines
- envelope (ADSR) and filter (LP-HP)
- portamento, vibrato and a few other things
- 4 octave switch
- you can choose between preset and control for five parameters"
This synth was used quite alot in the '70s and early '80s by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop composers, especially Paddy Kingsland.
ReplyDeleteListen for example to the the clarinet and flute parts on Kingsland's Whisper from Space, Brighton Pier and Whale (from the TV version of "Hitch Hikers Guide"),and some of the music from the Doctor Who episodes Meglos and Full Circle etc. That's the SY-2.
