GCe2 // GestureSynth

GCe2 // GestureSynth from Mouse & the Billionaire on Vimeo.
"Here's an example of the GCe2 (Gestural Controller - Exploration 2) in use with an application called GestureSynth. Tilting to the left and right lowers and raises the pitch, respectively. Tilting back applies a chorus effect, and squeezing the expression pads on the side creates a flange.

Thanks for watching."

Rare Blue Utility LFO

via VICMOD where you will find one more shot [see update below].

snip via Elby Designs, The Panther Series CGS758 - Utility LFO where you will find the full description:
"This module is a dual utility LFO offering manually variable wave shapes. Standard waveshapes are falling ramp variable through triangle to rising ramp, and variable pulse width. A fixed square wave is also available, as is a combination waveshape that is variable between the TRI/SAW output and the SQUARE. This is a MIX not a morph. Two switches allow the variable outputs of the two LFOs to be intermixed.

The Utility LFO is based on the standard integrator/schmitt trigger oscillator core. Two pots in the integrator charge path allow for the adjustment of speed, and along with two diodes, for the adjustment of
charge versus discharge time. Changing this ratio will allow the TRI/SAW output to be adjusted from a falling ramp through triangle to a rising ramp. At the same time, the output of the schmitt trigger will reflect this in the length of its output pulse."

Update via reSEQUENCer in the comments:
"Hey Matrixsynth, that's my Christmas present in the VICMOD photo. The kit was under the tree, then in my rack a couple of days later. Plays well with the Steiner Filter, ChaQuo & Roland 100m. Cheers, reSEQUENCer"

x0xb0x plays some spooky piano

YouTube via neandrewthal
"The melody is created by two VCO's, one being fed the CV out of the x0xb0x sampled second clock pulse and the other one, the same thing sampled every third clock pulse. They go through a lowpass filter which is opened by an envelope every third clock pulse and on to the neural agonizer to spookify things." There's a KORG Polysix in there as well.

Yamaha DX7 Digital Algorithm Programmable Synthesizer

via this auction

Interesting that Yamaha went with "Digital Algorithm Programmable Synthesizer" rather than FM in the label description. Algorithm referred to the various combinations of operator modulation pictured in the middle shot. In the same way you picked your oscillator waveform in analog and PCM based digital synths, you picked an algorithm in the DX7. You'd then edit from there.

acidlab BomBass Analog Acid Synth TB-303 clone

via this auction

"ONE OF THE FIRST ONES MADE, hence no midi, but it works great with any midi to cv/gate converter. Sounds like a 303 but can do so much more with the two oscillators, ring mod, osc. sync, lfo , filter FM. LFO has several different wave forms over the standard, like random and S&H, great for whacked out filter sweeps"

Roland TB-303 Bassline with AcidLab Mod

via this auction
"Fully functioning, except that it will only run on a power supply, since the battery leads were removed for the modification. Also, all holes were drilled for the CV/gate and audio mods, but never installed. The main modifications are present, though and working, ie. the overdrive, decay and resonance, x-mod pots and the Accent, Slide and bend switches and leds. MODIFICATIONS: overdrive, x-mod(cross modulation of oscillator), full accent on/off, full slide on/off, pitch bends, cut-off range expanded, resonance range expanded with new res. pot and decay can now be shorten to nice little Blips!!! Should be easy to add the cv/gate/audio jack mods if you want, with the directions from the acidlab site and some wire and 1/8th inch jacks. More info and specs"

Bandlimited ramp waveform example aiff files

"These sound files demonstrate bandlimited synthesis of a ramp wave from its fourier series. Limiting the synthesis to a particular number of harmonics affects the quality of the output. The question is how many are necessary for a satisfactory output?

The table below has example sound files of bandlimited ramps with increasing numbers of harmonics. There are tones over three octaves, starting from roughly 85Hz. Note that for the very large numbers of harmonics, there may be aliasing distortion present, since the harmonics will go above the Nyquist frequency for the 44.1KHz sample rate used for the examples."

You can find the table and samples on electric druid's Synth DIY pages.

Video Feedback Visualizer Modular Patch

YouTube via ionraygun
"I create live real-time video feedback sets on occasion and this is one of my favorite starter patches for audio visualization... wanted to demonstrate the patch while everything is still in this configuration from a New Years Eve gig.

This example uses an ebay telephone carbon microphone as an audio source going into a Doepfer A-119 input module filtered by Livewire and Plan B VCFs into an MFB VD-01 VideoScope module that is then keyed over a live video feedback signal path with a Videonics MX1 video mixer and processed by a Korg KAOSS Pad Entrancer... wow is anybody actually reading this?

Shot on a Nikon D90 for no other reason then it was handy and my Canon XHA1 is loaned out to a friend... plus who else would dare use their new DSLR for video feedback looping?

Watch in HD!"

Orbit III Monophonic Synthesizer (WurliTzer) - Demo

YouTube via Organgrinder010
"Just a quick little demo of this synth. There's really not a whole lot too it, but it does produce some interesting effects. Old age has taken its toll on it, and there are times where it will do some rather nauseous sounds. The divider circuit sometimes fails and it begins to cut octaves down, and sends the oscillator into LFO. I may just end up building a small moog-like cabinet for it and see if I can rewire the attack and decay circuits to make it a little more useful."

Synth Blues - JayVinsent

HyperSynth Alesis ION Editor

"Ion-editor is a MIDI-editor for advanced controlling over the famous Alesis ION analog modeling synthesizer in your DAW. For rejecting the mouse flicker and reducing zippering noise on MIDI port every knob is specifically programmed to transmit the MIDI messages like a real hardware MIDI controller so ion-editor knobs don’t generate several unwanted data with the same value which is a common issue in the most of the other MIDI-editors. The same pages like the original ion LCD display make the tweaking easy for parameters that need more descriptive information like filter panning, arpeggio, mod matrix and tracking generator.

Note : ION-editor does not generate any sound itself without using ION synth.

v1.0 Features:
- Support automation for all 234 ION parameters
- Flicker Free Knobs (unlike other midi editors!)
- Remotely changing ION banks and programs
- Automatable MIDI-OUT channel
- Preset manager with save and load function
- Sync to host option for master tempo
- Easily tweakable interactive tracking generator and mod matrix
- One waveshape display for each oscillator"

z3000 - fm hell

z3000 - fm hell from surachai on Vimeo.
"I just received my Tip Top Audio z3000 oscillator in the mail today and thought I'd introduce it to the rest of my system. The patch itself is quite complicated but essentially a Cwejman oscillator is going into the FM ins on the z3000 - First into FM1, then later in the FM2 where the modulation can be controlled from a pot. It can play nicely but I try to stay from that."

Weddell Filter Sweeps - "Encounters at the end of the world"

More than just filter sweeps actually. Just listen to the samples of Weddell seals on this page. Just do it.

via fischek:
"I've watched the "Encounters at the end of the world" movie by Werner Herzog and at one point a very interesting thing happened :) I know you only post stuff about the synths, but believe me these sounds are identical to analog filter sweeps and cracks, etc and what's producing them are Antarctic SEALS!"

They are indeed! Pretty amazing actually. The page linked above is from this site where you will find more samples and the source CDs. Directly below is the trailer for "Encounters at the end of the world" where you can hear some other interesting sounds.

Encounters at the End of the World Trailer

YouTube via THINKFilmNY

"Werner Herzog ("Grizzly Man," "Rescue Dawn") confirms his standing as poet laureate of men in extreme situations with ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD. In this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, the hub of the US Antarctic Program and home to eleven hundred people during the austral spring and summer (Oct-Feb).

Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from society as one can get."
