Sherman Rodec Restyler w/ modular sequence

YouTube via bigcitymusic. http://bigcitymusic.com
"Here's a little modular noodle being processed by the Sherman Rodec Restyler. The Sherman is an incredible sounding multimode filter with some fun Sherman quirks thrown in.

The knob on the bottom-left determines at what frequency the modulation kicks in. The big knob on the right is the overall frequency cutoff. The switch at the top-right engages the Sherman in the upper position, bypasses in the center, and acts as a momentary switch in the bottom position.

We're using the Jomox XBase 999 drum machine for the backing beat and to clock our sequence. This thing is fun!

MAM 'ACM 2' Analog Clap Module drum synthesizer

via this auction

"This is a rare Analog Clap Module from the now defunct Music and More aka MAM company in Germany. This is a one space rack mountable unit that is basically one module from the venerable MAM Syncussion / Vermona DRM series. It is true analog and is definetly aimed at those who appreciate the sound of the classic Roland TR series - It's quite good! Unusually it also has built in reverb to add some space. It has one mono analog out and one midi port in which allows it to be triggered by a sequencer (note on / off and velocity). The MIDI channel is programmable and there is also a manual trigger button on the front panel. It has been racked in one smoke free studio for the entirety of its life and is therefore in like new condition with hardly any signs of wear and no functional issues whatsoever. This is a unique and highly specialized little piece of analog gear. It also includes the original one page photocopied manual. enjoy!

Ode to Burrito

YouTube via PuglyWont
"First music I've made on a Nintendo DS-10. It's a great tool and It's fun working within it's limitations. But the sounds you can make more than make up for the limitations.

It's difficult to write melodies and a 'full' song with only 16 patterns... but I tried my best.

A trick I used was to lower the BPM to 70, and then have each pattern be two measures instead of one. I lose some speed...no 16th notes... but gain extra melodic versatility.

Burritos don't get enough muscially praise... so I'm dedicating this song to all the Burritos I've eaten... yum!

The Prob is also my artist name (for now). I think this VSTi has some value so...
Leave a comment, let me know what you think.

This VSTi is controlled by FL Studio till my melody ends. Then I take control! :)

Oh and there is no sense of building in some after effects. It makes it more advanced and the sequencer I used (FL Studio) has some decent effects!"

STEIM Announces junXion © v4

"STEIM is happy to announce the release of junXion © v4.

junXion v4 is a Mac OSX data routing application that can process 'sensors' from any HID (joysticks, mice, touchscreens), MIDI, OSC, Audio, Arduino and Video device using conditional processing and remapping, with MIDI or OSC events as its output. This resulting MIDI or OSC data is then available to any audio or music software that runs on that Mac or can be send to external MIDI/OSC devices.

junXion v4 is a system whereby the user creates so-called 'Patches'. Each Patch is a connection between a sensor input (for example: 'joystick X-axis' or Video Event Object y-position) and an Action (for example: 'convert the sensor data into midi controller 3, but only under certain conditions'). The Action is a user selectable set of conditions and actions that determine what should happen with the input-sensor's data and what kind of MIDI or OSC data should be send out.

junXion v4 features

* recognition and usage of 8 types of Input Sensors
o Human Interface Events, such as joystick X-axis, mouse scroll wheel, touch screen Y-axis
o MIDI Events, such as MIDI note events from Port 1, Mod. Wheel events from Port 2
o Timer Events, internal data generating processes, up to 100 Timers can be used
o OSC (Open Sound Control) Events via network
o WiiRemote Events, the popular Wii controllers support (on bluetooth machines)
o Audio Events, as level and pitch tracking sensors
o Arduino Inputs, simply reading the sensors connected to an Arduino board and using junXion to process these
o Video Inputs, use live video image to extract a 'Video Object' out of movement, color recognition, etc.
* being resolution independent, junXion v4 can handle any input data up to 16-bit resolution
* one Input Sensor such as 'joystick X-axis' can be connected to multiple Actions, thus generating multiple MIDI/OSC events
* multiple Input Sensors can be connected to one Action, so for example several switches of your joystick can trigger the same Action
* (auto) scaling of the incoming data
* straight mapping from the incoming data into one of the available MIDI/OSC events
* remapping of the computer keyboard and mouse to MIDI/OSC events
* creation of analog style sequencers using junXion's Timers
* MIDI output port or OSC network port selectable per Action
* the possibility to simultaneously connect up to 15 USB input devices and route them to separate or common MIDI channels/ports (for example: you can for instance 'play' Ableton Live with two joysticks and the computer keyboard)
* external MIDI input data can be merged with junXion's MIDI data or reprocessed and even turned into OSC messages
* save/recall user defined configurations
* editable table based response curves for the translation of gestures into MIDI controller data
* an extended set of data conditioners and conditional data routing (for example: passing a threshold by moving a joystick will first trigger a note and than send its further movement data as MIDI controller data)
* 'Timers' for timed data streams triggered and 'steered' by external input devices (for example: use for simple sequencing)
* 'Audio Events' as sensors, for each audio input junXion can extract the Level and Pitch to be used as input data.
* 'Video Events' as sensors, for each in junXion's video object editor definable Object you get six different input sensors, such as x and y position.

System requirements

junXion v4 runs on any Macintosh computer with OS X 10.4 or higher.

Some of the above functionality has successfully been applied in other STEIM systems for live performance: LiSa, The Lick Machine, SensorLab. The Amsterdam based STEIM foundation and its researchers have been at the forefront of the invention of physical input devices and touch based hardware and software instruments for live electronic music performance since the early 70's. STEIM's director Michel Waisvisz is one of the driving forces behind performances with free-movement hand-worn sensor/keyboard instruments and has, together with programmer Frank Baldé, designed several hardcore performance systems.

2009 Build Pictures

via EdisonRex on this electro-music.com thread

"20 days into 2009 already and the builds continue. Post your stuff!

Here's last weekend's effort (mostly Saturday with some debugging on Sunday). I had a cold solder joint on of all things the power pin on U2. Silly me.

The connectors on that board are dense, so I ended up using 12-pin connectors, with some 3 pin ones on the end."

You can find more DIY pics at the thread. I'm guessing that's fonitronik on the bottom?

Metasonix TM-7 Scrotum Smasher

via this auction
"The TM-7 is no longer made, and those interested probably know exactly what it is!
As the manual states:
The TM-7 is abasically a mean, angry preamp made of three vacuum tubes. Plus a feedback loop which makes the preamp unstable. The first tube is a 6AK5. It was used as an IF amplifier in military radios and suchlike. We use it as a preamp-a BAD preamp. The SCROTUM knob controls input volume. (No, you can't turn it fully down. This is intentional-because it interacts with the DOUBLE SCROTUM switch. Turning downw the input won't silence the awful noise and oscillation. Ha ha ha.) The the signal goes through ANOTHER 6AK5. The MEGA SCROTUM knob affects its gain. So, MEGA SCROTUM is basically a drive control. MEGA SCROTUM may be turned fully down, if you wish (it may or MAY NOT fully silence the TM-7). Finally, we have a 6BN6 tube. It was used as an FM modulation detector in cheap FM radios. You're not supposed to use it for audio. But it has a neat effect-when overdriven, it sounds like a push-pull guitar amp driven deep into saturation. You can affect the saturation with the SCROTUM UP YOU ASS knob. The DOUBLE SCROTUM switch inserts a FEEDBACK loop in the circuit. It's just an awful, awful thing. You'll find out. The SMASH switch selects the output desired-down, and you get the output of the second tube. Up gives the output of the third (6BN6) tube. If you want maximum saturation, flip it UP."

Plan B Model 15 Complex VCO

via the Plan B list:
"Effective today we are beginning shipments of the newly re-designed Model 15 Complex VCO which incorporates two major changes: The elimination of Cliff Jacks and 12 point to point interconnect wires.

The circuit, the module functionality and the price remains unchanged. These improvements were put in play to increase our production throughput, decrease the potential for field failures with the elimination of the 12 hand-soldered wires and addresses the continual Cliff jack availability issue which has shut our production line down in the past, most notably last summer at the worst possible time imaginable: two weeks before the ELFs were to be released when Cliff announced they were halting worldwide production for three months.

Freed from those constraints I am confident the M15 availability will flourish."

Korg Radias emulates the phased strings of the Eminent 310U - Equinoxe part 2

YouTube via Yorkshirelad69

"Equinoxe part II. Original music composed by Jean Michel Jarre.

This video is here only to show the Korg Radias doing quite a passable emulation of the phased strings created by passing the sound of the Eminent 310U through an Electro Harmonix Small Stone phaser.

This is swirling string sound that helped define Jean Michel Jarre's first two albums, Oxygene and Equinoxe.

No external effects were used, only those on the Radias.

I don't play it note for note, it's only to give you an idea of how good the emulation is so please don't comment on my lack of talent, I haven't been playing for long :)"

Volta has a blog

http://motu-volta.blogspot.com/

"New Features & Changes 01.23.08
We've added Hz/V scaling support, so you can control the pitch of older Yamaha and Korg keyboards that use this standard. This option is per module, not global for the entire instance of Volta, so you can seamlessly control a combination of Hz/v and V/oct gear as a single instrument.

A simple OpenSound Control (OSC) input module has been added to the to do list so you can funnel OSC data from any source into your modular.

We're busy testing interface compatibility, including the RME Fireface. The specs for this interface listed DC-coupled outputs, but in our testing, this interface does not work with Volta. Volta's calibration user interface is getting refined to display total available pitch tracking range. The hotter the interface output, the larger the pitch tracking range. In addition to providing useful feedback, this will also allow us to publish the pitch tracking range of approved Volta interfaces before Volta ships."
