GorF PCB, V2

via Vacoloco
GorF is getting closer.
"I actually finished the PCB layout a week ago, but I’ve been letting it sit and making minor changes as I go, little things like part numbers, moving things around etc. I think it’s now pretty much final, so next week after I’ve been paid, I”m going to order 50 of these and see how we go with them."

Acidlab Miami Sequencer Demos

via MaD

"Acidlab Miami made with the internal sequencer of the machine. The second mp3 is a bit "on the limit" sometimes, but it shows very good the tap-in mode and the different shuffle modes of the Miami. I include also a new outline of the overprint from the Miami. This is maybe not the final version." mp3s here along with the prior demo from this post. Tip: search on acidlab miami on the top left of the site for all posts leading up to this one.

gakken makes a bigger theremin

via John Levin
"I took a vacation from pastoral Vermont to go to NYC last weekend. While hanging out in Williamsburg in Brooklyn, I walked into one hipster shop and saw a new Gakken theremin! I've seen it online for as low as 155 bucks."

I did a quick search and found it on Theremin World. It's the Theremin Premium. I also found some listed on Ebay. Gakken is a Japanese magazine that usually includes a DIY kit in every issue. You might remember the older Gakken Theremin from these posts. Gakken also makes the SX-150.

Messiaen, Oliver - Oraison (1937)

YouTube via bajistarojo. follow-up to this post. NOTE the image actually is not the Ondes Martenot, you can click on the label below for prior posts including videos and images.

Video description:
"Written for the early electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot (above), Olivier Messiaen's "Oriason" is a beautifully mellow and plaintive piece of music. The Ondes Martenot is a close relation of the theremin, and like the theremin was frequently used (and abused) on sci-fi film and tv soundtracks throughout the 40's, 50's and 60's, but also gained a foothold in many "serious" orchestras. I first heard "Oriason" on the box set "Ohm;The Early Gurus of Electronic Music", as recorded by Ensemble d'Ondes de Montreal.
(From "Thespoiledmetropolis.blogspot.com")."

via Richard Lainhart on AH regarding the Ondes Martenot:
"The whole instrument is monophonic, with one sound engine for both controllers (in other words, you can't play both at once.) The Ondes was the first electronic instrument with a direct vibrato keyboard that I know of - as you can see in the video, the whole keybed shifts laterally slightly when he vibrates his hand.

Messiaen is one of my favorite composers, and he wrote a lot of music for the Ondes. There are a series of "Feuillet Inedit" works for Ondes and piano, of which the video is one, that are quite lovely, and he also wrote a suite of pieces for 6 Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belle Eaux" that is just stunning. One of the works from that suite, "Oraison", is not only possibly the first piece of purely electronic music intended for performance, but also (IMO) one of the most beautiful pieces of electronic music ever. (I'm working on a transcription of that piece for Continuum and Buchla.)

The instrument shown in the image isn't an Ondes, though."

Yamaha CS-80

via this auction
"This is the Yamaha CS-80, the mother of all polyphonic synthesizers. 220 lbs of pure juicy aftertouch heaven. This unit was purchased a few years ago from its original owner, Drew Arnott of the Canadian 80's pop sensation Strange Advance. There is still a 1980 sticker from Long & McQuade music on the back. My tech souped it up from parts of another CS80 & it has been purring like a kitten ever since. It has remained in a smoke-free studio, kept at 73 degrees F, and, miraculously, has stayed very well in tune. To that end, it features the later, more stable oscillator circuitry. You are intimate with the CS80's sound if you have ever watched Blade Runner or listened to Peter Gabriel's So.

The synth is in excellent cosmetic condition. All the buttons & sliders are functional, although, as always, a few of the bulbs under the preset buttons have burned out & I never bothered to replace them. Not pictured but included are the metal legs & casters, the lucite music stand attachment, the wood & tolex top cover, and, if you're interested, free of charge, the other CS80."

Note the patch memory below - four rows of sliders. You select the patch button corresponding to each row and edit. Each row is basically a mini version of the main panel.

Gradywerks MPG64-A and MPG64-R

"The MPG64-A (Midi Pattern Generator 64 Alpha) is a 64 step midi sequencer designed to run on Windows Vista or XP with a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768. In addition to playing midi notes, the MPG64-A is capable of simultaneously recording the resulting audio, creating loopable WAV files that can be used in any audio application. An 'Auto Set' feature can be used to automatically calculate and correct for latency of the midi device prior to recording, resulting in loopable samples.
The 64 step pattern data can also be exported to a midi file. The MPG64-A features a row of parameter knobs which can control the duration and velocity of each note, and can also be used to set values for two continuous controllers. A 'Controller Automation' feature uses preset patterns to modulate the continuous controllers to create filter sweeps and random 'sample and hold' type effects. The MPG64-A is also designed to run as a plug-in for Tu2 by Bram Bos. When using the MPG64-A to trigger a software synthesizer running on the same computer, you may need to install a 'midi loopback' such as Maple (Windows Vista) or MIDIYOKE (Windows XP)."

" There are now two versions of the MPG64-R. A free version, and a 'Special Edition' version available after a $19 USD donation. The Special Edition version features new graphics and a second tempo knob for the last grid two rows. By setting the 2nd tempo to a different value, some very unique and complex drum loops can be created.

The MPG64-R is the sister program of the MPG64-A and is geared for creating drum patterns. Some features include the ability to play in midi sync with the MPG64-A and the ability to export the pattern data to a Midi file. The primary feature of this program is a very simple, 64-step drum grid which can be used in lieu of your existing drum machine's complex sequencer. It can be used to trigger any type of midi drum machine, either software or hardware. Each of the 20 rows can be set to a different midi channel, so you can even trigger multiple devices simultaneously from the same grid! You can also run multiple MPG64-R's in synchronization, just in case 20 drum sounds triggered simultaneously isn't enough :)"

"With the random button you get very interesting sequences. Slave it to midi clock I open say 5 Instances of the MPG64-A all controlling different synths, pressing the random button until something interesting happens. Can be 4 beats 8 ,16 ect. Interesting results all the time."

Lainhart Films At L.A. Festival

"Films "One Year" and "drift" to be screened at L.A. International Festival of Cinema and Technology

Richard Lainhart, award-winning composer, filmmaker, and author, is pleased to announce that two of his short films, "One Year" and "drift", have been accepted for screening at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology's Visions of Movement, Art and Sound, Saturday February 7th in Los Angeles.

'One Year' is a year-long timescape of a maple tree in Lainhart's backyard, photographed daily with a digital still camera under computer control and assembled and processed in Adobe After Effects. The soundtrack is computer-processed bowed vibraphone, played and recorded live. 'drift' is an abstact HD film created entirely in Adobe After Effects. The soundtrack is an improvisation for lapsteel guitar processed with the Symbolic Sound Kyma System.

The International Fest of Cinema and Technology (IFCT) takes place at the Downtown Independent Theatre at 251 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles. This festival will be screening films from filmmakers around the world. The IFCT, (www.ifct.org) now in its 6th year, specializes in screening new animation and experimental film. The festival line-up also includes an array of exceptional narrative and documentary features and shorts.

The IFCT is designed to give exposure to independent films, many of which previously had been underexposed to the public. The festival's motto is it seeks to "discover the undiscovered film." The "technology" in the festival's name occurs both in the content of the festival, which tends to focus on themes of technology or feature unique creation techniques, as well as in the method of showcasing content at the events.

Richard Lainhart's "drift" and "One Year" will receive their L.A. premieres at the Festival's Visions of Movement, Art and Sound, Saturday February 7th. This showcase features cutting edge films with an intense focus on music and equally dynamic visuals. Along with Lainhart, presentations include 10 new and innovative music videos including Katy Davis' "Stay in My Memory" video for Bimm, SHTIL Music Video for Infectzia, and Hillside Music Video directed by Nir Ben Jacob for the band Sidewalk Fiction, among others. Other films in this screening sequence focusing on strong sounds and mesmerizing visuals include "Himalyanwalk" directed by Jeanet Snijders, "Motion" directed by John Osborne.

It is sample-based, in that the VSM don’t emulate these instruments from scratch, but starts with recordings, which you can then retune, pan and modify with filters (lowpass, highpass and bandpass) and LFO."
