"Here is my late Cat, Sid... he loved hanging out with me when I worked on the synth, and also patch cables were one of his good games ;)

I thought it would be cool to put on your blog!

Definitely cool, and definitely gets a post. Cats and pets in general are the few things in life that unconditionally have your back, through the good and the bad times. Cheers to Sid.

Analogue Systems rs290 Crushes Your Bits Too

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Man. There's not much this module doesn't do. Besides an incredible sounding high-quality stereo digital delay with built LFO and a hard to beat voltage controlled sampler mode, the rs290 can crush your sounds too. This great little trick doesn't even require the unit to be engaged. Just select sample size, reduce, and abuse.

Our sound source is the Elektron SFX-60 Mk II MonoMachine."

Anyone know what synth that is?

Alesis ION per DustySchematics in the comments.

And maybe not. Update via EmptySet int he comments: "I thought at first that was an Ion too… it's color, the red knob on the right, jacks look similar.

However, I have an Ion and just looked at it and the position of all the outputs and inputs looks all wrong in the photo. For example, the MIDI ports on my Ion would appear where the CURIOSITY label is."

Update: I'm pretty sure it's a Micron. I actually have one and took a look. The angle in the images makes it look a bit shorter than it actually is.

BigSeq2 Screenshot

via Analog Industries where you'll find the full post.

"There is one major change to the architecture, as well. Previously, we had only one modulation target per effect. Essentially, you could only use the modulation sequencer of each effect for one parameter. Now, if you note, there is a small slider under each knob, where you can select positive or negative modulation against the current value. This creates a lot more possibilities, we think. The few of you that own Ronin will be familiar with this way of doing things. We also used this method for the LFO in Discord 2."

Pixel Studio

"I needed better icons for the Audio/MIDI tool in OS X (the included ones are too generic) so I made pixel versions of my equipment. Not everything is to scale and there are a few omissions but I'm happy with the end result."

via phono1337 on the forum (more pics):

"Here's what i've been secretly brewing up over the past month

Right here's the details in case any of you would be x0xers want to do one of these,

The panel overlays were put together by myself and Jeff at custom synth, if you want one, just visit www.customsynth.co.uk drop Jeff an email and ask him for "Phono's x0xb0x overlay". I'm more than happy if people want to get these printed up (as im sure Jeff is haha). The cost is £25 per panel overlay and that includes a rear panel overlay also.

The Grey switchcaps came from Jerwin and cost $27.50 including shipping for 50 (i grabbed a few extras, you only really need 23 per x0x) http://www.ableideas.com/x0xb0x/

The Knobs all came from http://www.conrad-int.com and cost me 581 swedish kronor for two sets including shipping (thats approx $72 at time of writing this)

notes: the selector knobs i had to bore out a little since they didnt fit the greyhill encoders at all (i also had to trim a few mm off the top of the greyhills)
I also had to grind some off the tempo knobs, they are the same knobs as the volume but since the tempo encoder has a shorter shaft these knobs wouldnt attach. I may actually eventually grind the volume ones down and trim the volume shaft to make it more uniform.

Here's the part numbers for the knobs

bank/mode select (Aluminium T-handle button) Product ID 183770-62
cutoff/res etc (High-quality metal knob) Product ID 184077-I5
tempo/volume (High-quality metal knob) Product ID 184091-I5"

Note the coins under the counter. Pawn shop days... How I miss them.
This is the K5000W, the Workstation version of the K5000S. Both digital additive synths with PCM sample based waveforms as well. The K5000S has section of knobs on the upper left and the K5000W has a built in sequencer. The S does have an extensive arpeggiator. Both have buttons that light amber when enabled. Pretty classy synths.

"The SH-2000 is a very old and limited but funky analog synth. It has a bunch of preset sounds selected from those ugly green, red and white buttons beneath the keyboard. The sliders give you control of the filter cut-off, resonance, modulation, and sustain. Amazingly however, this 1973 synth has aftertouch which can be assigned to the filter or pitch or to the 'GROWL' sound (growling is what this synth is best for). The SH-2000 is great for squeaky effects and growling bass notes

Loomer Aspect

"Aspect is a 32-note polyphonic software instrument that combines a great-sounding, powerful synthesis engine, with a flexible semi-modular architecture and unparalleled ease of use. The core of Aspect's superb sound are two analog modeled oscillators, each capable of producing a powerful selection of raw waveforms, and dual filters that can be routed in series, in parallel, or even blended into unique combinations.

Modulation sources comes in the form of three analog modeled envelopes, capable of producing quick, snappy attacks, and three flexible LFOs, which can be synced to tempo.

A flexible patch section allows sources to be combined and processed to produce complex modulations from simple sources, whilst a versatile modulation architecture allows practically anything to be used as a modulation source and destination.

With optimised audio algorithms that won't overload your processor, rock-solid stability, and easy integration with any MIDI hardware controller, Aspect is ideal for live work. With a simple and intuitive interface, flexible Bank and Program management, and total parameter automation, Aspect fits right into your studio environment.
Aspect is available for Mac OS X v 10.4 and above, Windows XP and above, and Linux, in Audio Unit, VST plugin, and Standalone application formats.

An evaluation is available for free download, with the following limitations:

* User created Program and Bank configurations can be saved, but not loaded.
* Audio output will stop after 30 minutes of continuous use. The only way to continue using Aspect is to restart the application.

Purchasing a licence will remove these evaluation limitations."

"Another of my instrumentals, played by our band "North". These are the same three players as on the M-33 track, but by now we'd also added a bass player! This one's in more of a rock/fusion style. The CS-80 plays the primary rhythmic riff (alternating bars of 4/4 and 15/16... over the drums which are actually playing two bars of 3/4 followed by a bar of 7/16... it all works out), and then lays down the harmonies behind the Fender Rhodes solo. This is literally a basement recording from the drummer's basement where we rehearsed."

Ben Simon Wooden Synth

I love the colored knobs on this thing.

"While The Good Graces were waiting for The Evening Muse to open up for our show in Charlotte last Saturday, we stumbled across this little gallery called Beet in the NoDa part of town. Update: some info via Ben Simon: "The purple keyboard is made of the woods: purple heart, santos mahogony (for the 'white keys') and an unidentified yellow wood for the black keys. The woods naturally occur as the colors they appeared as... (inother words, no staining or coloring of the woods happened - just an oil finish..) The circuit inside the keyboard is a Yamaha PSS-140 and its been rewired and modified (also called circuit bent)

I built this at my house in Indian Land South Carolina. I'm planning to make more in 2009.."

KORG DW-8000

via this auction. Note this is the one from this video.
"Very clean ,everything as it should be(checked and tested) ,a few light scratches here and there(see photos) but overall in very good condition.

A very underrated synth with a lot of sound creating potential if you can see past the one parameter at a time editing ...which by the way is very easy to do ( see video) as the legend for each paramter is laid out clearly on the board. In alot of ways it forces you to think how you are creating the sounds (instead of haphazardly moving knobs and faders) and you will learn alot about sound synthesis in the process.
As for the idea of more knobs the better ,actually i think there are just enough (sometimes being limited by what you can control gives you more creative expressive control),with the joystick and one parameter you can assign .... or you can just plug in a midi controller."

Jayemsonic Filtonium

From the maker of the Resonator Neuronium, Jürgen Michaelis.
"The Filtonium came up by the idea to make again a "real" musical instrument without Midi and without keys or buttons. The soundproduction actually consists from a filter (which gave it the name), which can be excited by various kinds and thus serves as an oscillator, filter and VCA in one thing.

Three of these filters make the Filtonium a trichord, each of which can be played in tonal with the fingers on those metal sticks (sliders) similar to a string of a violin. There is no frets or quantisation! It's up to be played...

The excitation can be played by pressure and velocity sensitive pads on the corpus with three fingers of the right hand.

You can also use the bow function with the middle short slider to bow the filters like a violin string. Herewith, innumerable many shades of musical attacks are possible.

The three knobs adjust the resonance begin, the cross modulation of all three filters and the main volume. Because they don't have to be tweaked that much, they are placed at a less prominent location on the corpus.

The three "string" slider can be tuned individually by the fine trimmers at the end of the neck. Thus, open tunings, unisono, but also classic guitar(4th) or violin (5th) tunings ar possible.

Each slider has an interval of an octave.

The tonal scaling across the way of the slider is "linear" or hyperbolic (1/x) as for a real string instrument, because it is determined by quotients. The whole way is an octave, two thirds a 5th, a quart is a 4th, one third a -3rd etc.

So, to get tonal intervals, one has to play "logarithmic" scales like on the fret grid of a guitar (always the shorter to the corpus). All musicians playing string instruments are very familiar to playing like this, and an intervalwise linear grid (piano) would cause more difficulties and confusion.

With this, the typical exponentializing of the control voltage (like Volt/Octave) is not neccessary and would not cause further inaccuracys and temperature drifts like with normal synth VCOs.

The idea came in 1997, during talks with industrial designer Frank Dellen about the finish designs of AirBase99 and SunSyn. He took my conception and made a design and ergonomic study at the university GH Essen during his his study.

Now he gave me the model with his kind permission, to let this nice concept just be published and not forgotten in our minds."
