CHARLES COHEN AT THE BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL from Alex on Vimeo.
"/ / / / / Viewing with headphones or a stereo source is highly recommended / / / / /

This colorful video features sound artist Charles Cohen improvising on a 1970's Buchla Music Easel. This extremely rare instrument is one of Don Buchla's 200 series. Buchla (a pioneer of audio synthesis) only manufactured 14 of these units. The entire film was edited from an hour-long set of free improvisation, with audio was taken directly from Charles' mixing board.

All of the photography and editing was produced by Alex Tyson, a sound and video artist from Pennsylvania. The film was shot in 16:9 720p High Definition format, using a 35mm LensBaby 3GPL.

This film is free to distribute, share, blog, vlog, etc. When re-posting, please copy and paste this text to inform anyone about the film.

At this time the film is only available online. While you can stream it in HD, it is best viewed on DVD.
Please contact the filmmaker for hard copies if interested.

Introducing the Yamaha SY 1

"This last Friday I picked up a Yamaha SY-1 , apparently Yamahas first synth from 1974. I am currently working together with Matti Bye with music for a norwegian film.

This little mobile film was shot at Roth Händle studios in Stockholm. If you are curious to find out more about the studio please visit www.roth-handle.nu"

Stereopsis - No Pressure

"This is the second song I wrote. Using MicroKorg, KP3, and Roland Handsonic 10. I sampled all of my beats onto KP3, and added twists of my own, Enjoy. Let's try the sun, for solar energy. Let's breakdown greenhouse gases, and pollution. There is 'No Pressure; No Fresh Water'."

MOOG MINIMOOG DEMO - classic monophonic synthesizer - played with reverb and delay

YouTube via AnalogAudio1
"This video shows the Mini Moog in action. The Minimoog is a monophonic analog synthesizer with an outstanding, excellent sound - the "Moog sound". The modules inside the Minimoog are of the same high quality like those in Moog modulars. I played the Mini with Yamaha ProR3 reverb and Roland DEP-5 for delays."

MeggySeq Loops and Noises

flickr by solipsistnation. follow-up to this post.
"MeggySeq, Meggy, and the Waveshield with a different set of files. The Waveshield plays files straight off an SD card, so I believe they can be arbitrarily long (up to the size of the SD card the Waveshield supports-- 2GB).

It's monophonic, though, so if something is playing and you start a second file, the first stops playing. This isn't a bad thing, depending on what you're trying to do. It does give you some fun glitchy possibilities. (The loops and samples are from www.rhythm-lab.com.)"

How to make your Microkorg sound REALLY retro!!

YouTube via mik300z
"I've been asked by a few people to share the parameters on this Roland vp-330 like strings patch, so here it is. After inputting these settings exactly you'll have this lovely warm vintage string sound as is heard in the little track I made for the video (inspired by Vangelis' Bounty soundtrack).
I have about 6 variations of it, if you use the phaser on mod fx instead of ensemble it gives a really nice Jarre-like sound too....enjoy!"

"Despite its name, the TX802 FM Tone Generator is basically a rack-module version of the DX7mkII with full 8-part multi-timbral operation for sequencing and/or key mapping. It has 16-voices of polyphony and six digital FM Operators, the same as in the DX7mkII. There are 128 preset and 64 user patches for your sounds, as well as an external memory cartridge slot."

I love how all the Yamaha rack synths from this time had those pull-out card sheets. They slide inside a compartment slot in the unit itself. They are also attached so they do not fully pull out and get lost.

Roland Juno-6 with MIDI to CV Converter

via this auction

Aynone know who makes the converter?

Update via Doug in the comments: "I'm pretty sure that's the "MIDI arpeggio synchronizer" from www.dinsync.com.

It's not a MIDI to CV converter, it spits out a MIDI synchronized clock for the arpeggiator on the Juno 6."

Amplifier section contain Envelope ADSR with loop function (retrig), modulation & bypass mode.

Modulator section is a low frequency oscillator with multiple waveforms
and changable rate. LFO roots to amplifier, filter, VCO-1, VCO-2.
Polivoks can play like a classic monophonic synth or in 2-voice mode.
And also You can modulate VCO-1 with VCO-2 (ringmodulator).

MeggySeq

"The Meggy Jr RGB from Evil Mad Science running MeggySeq, driving a Wave Shield from Lady Ada. MeggySeq is a pattern-based drum machine sequencer. It has 8 patterns of 16 steps each and each step can play one of 8 samples (the colors are hard to tell apart on the video). Next steps: Saving patterns to the eeprom, sending MIDI (currently it just sends single characters over serial to the WaveShield) and possibly syncing to external clock sources. Or, you know, changing the tempo at all."

via solipsistnation (Distant Stations: solipsism.net)
"Darius (tinysubversions.blogspot.com) and I have been messing with the Meggy
Jr RGB kit for the past few days. He did some neat stuff last week, and that
led me to order one and build it on Sunday. It's a great little kit-- it's
VERY easy to start doing interesting stuff. He was doing some things with
his MeggySynth and the Waveshield, and I wrote this sequencer in only a few
hours."

"What are your current favorite pieces of hardware?
So many favorites... As far as modular synths, the Macbeth M5 and the cwejman S1 and my eurorack with Livewire etc. The 808, MS20, Voyager and Vostok are getting quite a bit of use as well. The reason I love the Macbeth is how large it sounds, it's got my favorite tone out of all my analogs and is very inspiring to work with. The cwejman is a winner for its precision and envelopes, it's a very diverse synth as far as sonic possibilities. I've also become a huge fan of the Livewire AFGs, I'm definitely going to have to buy all the Livewire stuff now. The 808 is my go to drum machine, I love setting it up with all the outputs going thru crazy pedal chains and just jamming and recording loops with it for hours. The filters on the MS20 never get old and are constantly processing other sounds sources. Voyager is just fun as hell to play, I love the XY pad and its straightforward controls. The Vostok is strange, it's a bit quirky and I like it for its weird 3rd digital VCO. It's a fun portable synth, and makes me want to build a road case for the Cwejman as well."

Moog 55 for Sale

via the AH archives:
"After a strong brainstorming I have decided to sell a great piece of hystory...This is a Unique custom Moog 55 modular system that was serviced in 1993 directly by Bob Moog. It is FULLY working and tested, used often and all the knobs, switches are absolutely perfect! The sale inlcuses a lot of original accessories: R.A. 950 Keyboard, R.A. Ribbon controller, Moog percussion controller, full set lot of original Moog 55 coloured patch cables + S-trig cables, original user + service manuals, original replacements parts: lamps, knobs, rocker switch, cinch jones plugs and some sequencer switches. The shape conditions are MINT! the down + up cabinets are original. The price that I ask is of 43000 that justifies the high quality, the excellent conditions and his unique custom module composition... 3x Moog filters + coupler and "the Best of" R.A: Moog Vco 901. Another factor: I have his two wood padded big boxes for the transport. I can trade in part with only EMS, Buchla, Polyfusion, Arp 2500 stuff."

This came in today. For contact info search the AH archives.
