FIRST PRODUCTION MATTSON MINI MODULAR SYNTH DEMO MINUET IN A MINOR

YouTube via redmartian
Update: I originally had the VIMEO version up, but it wouldn't play, so here's the YouTube one.

"This piece showed up as being by anonymous in Apollo's Banquet (1670) but is actually by Henry Purcell. A sounds/noises made by the MMM production model number one. The pictures are mostly taken from the 2007 PNW Synth DIY with the original MMM Pre-Production Prototype. Last photo is of Seattle at dusk on Saint Patrick's day."

Note this is demo number eight of the Mattson Mini Modular by Red Martian. I thought I'd put up demos one through seven for reference and a look back in time. Some of these originally went up as YouTube videos so the quality here is better. The following is in order starting with the first.

FIRST PRODUCTION MATTSON MINI MODULAR 07A-0001 SYNTHESIZER from RED MARTIAN on Vimeo.

"Here is the first production model Mattson Mini Modular analogue synthesizer serial number 07A-0001.

All sounds in this recording were produced on the MMM using the production run modules.

The percussion sounds were sampled and arranged on an Akai MPC-1000. The bass line was sequenced in Logic and the saw leads were recorded as performed.

The bass and lead sounds are produced using three oscillators in tune with various setting differences. The Jim Patchell filter is run with both LP and BP outputs run into stereo VCAs.

The only effect used is reverb from a t.c. electronic M-One."

To help publicize it,
I am uploading a free download a week from my older electronic works (lots of analogue stuff), Flight of the Atom Bee (right now) and when I am done with that, I will be uploading the complete "Deus Sex Machina" cd for free download.

There are 3 songs from the cd up so far. The Big Shimmer, Wild Pink Yonder, and Flight of the Atom Bee. Coming up: [Hydraulic] Serenity Applicator (lots of serge on there, too)"

Pictured is the system "used for the Bee sound, the birdie, the wind, and the drone in "Flight of the AtomBee." Note this is not the actual patch as it was vastly more complicated. You can find the full story on the making of FOTAB here.

How to play Oxygene in a toy organ

YouTube via cmatsuoka
"This is a rendition of Jarre's Oxygene played entirely on a cheap Casio toy organ (except percussion and sound effects), just to see if it was possible to get a minimally recognizable result, and to show that you don't need lots of expensive keyboards to have fun playing classic synth stuff. All lines were played by hand with no sequencer and no MIDI, just a multitrack recorder.

I only studied each part briefly before recording, so don't expect note-by-note accuracy. Some parts were just ad-libbed or deliberately changed to sound better with the (very) limited range of available sounds, but you'll get a general idea of arrangements and overall mood.

So that's it, get your $20 keyboard and enjoy!"

Patch of the Day - Arrhythmia

"All elements were triggered from a single clock source with subsequent rhythms derived from a home-brew dual comparator, Doepfer A-143-1 and Plan B Model 10. A sequential switch was used to inject random timing and pitch modulation." More details on navs.modular.lab

"This will eventually be a series of synthesizers which respond to light, positioned together with a series of lights that respond to sound. Exterior sounds generate light, which in turn generates sound, creating a loop of flashing light and noise. Components are housed in clear glass containers and each element is different, making a family of organic self-perpetuating characters which respond to each other as well as audience interaction."

ARP Axxe and a Bag O' ...

via this auction

See this post for the bag reference.

"You are bidding on a lovingly cared for orange and black face ARP Axxe synthesizer model 2323 in excellent 'collector' condition. These units were the final ones to be produced by ARP from about 1978 up through ARP's demise in 1981. It is a monophonic analog synth with one voltage controlled oscillator, permitting one note playablility at a time. Excellent for solo leads or bass synth lines. This specific unit works 100% and has no broken slider control posts. All keys are level and accurate (not common for ARP's of this vintage) and all color coded knobs are in their correct locations according to the manufacturer's specifications and slider's function. There are some slider controls that 'stick' while moving them, but work fine using the proper care. This was also common even for brand new units in the day. I know...I was there. Also included in this auction is an additional ARP Axxe model 2321(earlier in the orange & blackface production), which I have used over the years to access replacement parts whenever needed on the 2323. This 'parts unit' has the classic wooden sides, as opposed to the final production 2323's (and ARP Odyssey's) which were produced with tanned leather sides in order to reduce original production costs and provide improved durability."

Interesting note regarding the sticky sliders when new. No mention if the bag contains crack.

DIY Analog Synthesizer Demonstration

YouTube via GVNZ9
"This is my DIY Synth. Using schematics from Ray Wilson, Thomas Henry and Marc Bareille, i've bulilt my owm machine featuring:

2 XR VCO
1 24dB Lowpass Filter
1 12dB State variable Filter
2 ADSR
2 VCA
1 LFO whit S&H
1 white noise generator
1 MIDI-CV (mcv876-4CV)
there is also a modular section in the lower-right corner of the upper half, allowing to reach almost every output&input of the single circuits. Patching an input overrides the internal connections to that input.

The XR vcos are great! Those allows continuous variation (called SKEW) from triangle to saw and from sine to "rampoid" (sort of saw with sine-ish decay) waves. I added sync switches, fm switches, lfo to skew, lfo to pitch switches, vco to skew switches.

The 12dB filter has a special feature: beyond the LP, BP, HP output it has an output wich continuosly blends the LP and HP outs according to the LFO signal

the LFO outputs saw, ramp, triangle waves and a S&H stage output. The S&H is clocked by the LFO and feeded with white noise.

Apart from circuit schematics, I made everything: PCBS, enclosure, panels, knobs, labels. The enclosure is made of walnut and can be closed and carried as a suitcase.

once closed it measures (HxWxD) 23x33x14 Cm and weights around 6Kg

took many hours of work and cost me something around 250€"

My diy synth into diy filterbank

"This is my diy synth (see my other video for more info about it) going into my diy filterbank, wich adds some further filtering and distortion to the sound.
A midi sequence is sent from my pc to the synth, the sound generated by the latter is fed into a filter, wich is controlled by a cv and by the output of another filter, again fed with the signal coming from the synth. The step sequencer is controlled by the note gate signal coming from the synth's midi-cv, and it's output voltage controls the second filter of the filterbank. What you hear is the lp+bp (plus a bit of the original signal) output of the first filter run thru the filterbank compressor."

filterbank groove mangling

"This is a simple drum loop (never changes during the video) passed thru my filterbank. The gate generator outputs a pulse every hihat hit (1/8th) which commands the beatslicer and the step sequencer. The first has 3 outs and slices the input according to the rhythmic pattern "1&2&" : "1" goes to first output, "2" to the second, "&s" to the third; every output is processed in a different way. The step sequencer controls the first filter. Also other things are used in this patch: distortion, compressor, square wave vco."
