Introducing Ichabod - Billy Corgan's Mattson Mini Modular

http://mattsonminimodular.com

"Ichabod is a custom MMMega system commissioned by Billy Corgan of ‘Smashing Pumpkins’.

The system is a 192 module space system comprised of three custom-built 4X wide central cabinets, four standard-size auxiliary 12-space cabinets that can be utilized independently and two custom designed cable caddies for storing and organizing patch cables. The color scheme is orange and black with custom logo panels. The case is hand crafted from African Padauk. Module placement was determined to assure that each cabinet could be utilized as a stand-alone system independent of the other cabinets. Ichabod configured as pictured measures about six feet wide (1.75m) and four feet (1.37m) high.

The final module compliment has yet to be determined and presently sports a whopping 32 VCO’s, 16 VCF’s, 16 ADSR Envelope Generators, 16 VCA’s and 8 MIDI-CV controllers to consist of the main control and audio chains. The remainder of the modules are a generous multiple selection of CV generation and signal processing modules.

Billy asked George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular to design and build a sequencer to compliment the system. Coming soon is a 3-panel wide 8X3 analog sequencer that can be synchronized and run in series or parallel with multiple units. The project required that George finalize the designs of several module designs that were in development and lead to the creation of some new modules. The new modules will be presented throughout the week.

Ichabod is now cosmetically complete. Module manufacturing is in production with completion scheduled for July or August." Note you can see the new sequencer in the bottom row of cabinets, third from the left, top row. If you click on the image and look closely you will see other unannounced modules.
Update: larger shot here.

"Your styles are called Industrial, Noise or Power Electronics? Or you wanna create some game sounds? Then you should give Mr. Alias2 a try. It's one of the most annoying softsynth I've ever tested , that's the reason why I love it! It`s running on Windows, OS X and Linux and it's free. You can grab it here: http://www.thepiz.org/mralias2/"

MegaSynth Sequencer Demo

YouTube via YonacSoftware
"Here is a quick demo of how to use the Sequencer in MegaSynth, for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The first sequence played is a few opening notes from Lady Gaga's "Just Dance." These are all eighth notes, so each box will have an eighth note programmed in it. Also, the Attack button is used so that each eighth note is heard distinctly.

The second sequence is a little more complicated. It uses different note patterns, and also uses the silent button.

If you have any questions, or would like to suggest the next MegaSynth Demo topic, please leave a comment or send an e-mail to info@yonac.com. Thanks for watching!"

Modular Drum Machine - Synthesizers.com + Yusynth + MFOS

YouTube via Thalassa77
"http://switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot.com

This patch emulates the classical sound of the drum machines from the 60s-70s

The core of this patch is white noise generator , that is filtered using a multi mode filter.
The sequencer CV out is controlling the the 1/cvt input of the filter, so you can program on the sequencer different filter response for every step.

The filter has individual outs for filter types, here I'm using high-pass and band pass connected to a mixer and mixer out is conecto to VCA .

The VCA is controlled by one ADSR that is triggered by sequencer gate out.

Modules used in this patch :

Yusynth Noise Generator
Synthesizers.com State Variable Filter
Synthesizers.com 4 Channel Mixer
Synthesizers.com Envelope Generator
Synthesizers.com Amplifier
MFOS 16 Step Analog Sequencer

Siel Orchestra II; differences in the OR400 and Sequential Circuits Prelude versions

YouTube via sounddoctorin
"Bob Weigel of Sound Doctorin' ( http://www.sounddoctorin.com) compares these two divide down combo synths of the early 80's. They are primarily just different cosmetically. But it turns out there is a fairly major surprise in that the SCI machine has normal polyphonic release on the strings, whereas the Siel OR400 'mutes' the strings when a new chord or note is hit without fingers on the previously established chord/note. Useful in a mix. But distracting when listened to alone when you are trying to get a flowing overlay of notes. I cut out the section where I talked about the volume controls delivering different levels at the points I had them set also. I guess I never checked to see if the SCI unit just had hotter output or of it's a different taper slider come to think of it. Oh well. Not a major factor anyway. But there is a difference there. And the EQ's as I noted are very different in their levels. The OR400... you have to set them all very high to get levels similar to the un-eq'd sound where the Prelude this is not the case. There may be a trimmer for that. Not sure. I'll look into it someday maybe. I don't have the service manual for these...just the Orchestra 1 I believe."

Appendage Touch Ribbon Sequencer and Klee: Controlling Synced VCO

YouTube via ScottStites
"This patch uses the Appendage Sequencer to control two VCOs - one master and one slave. The Appendage Bend Voltage is also patched to the V/Oct input of the slave VCO. The Bend voltage is also patched into the Min/Max function of my mixer - bend voltages below 0V open a VCA that controls an LFO that is patched to the pitch control of the Sequencer, allowing the LFO to modulate the frequency of both VCOs.

The TFS voltage is used to open a VCA that controls the level of an LFO controlling filter cutoff - the farther apart two points of pressure are, the more the VCA is opened, allowing more modulation to the filter. The Appendage is in voltage mode, so that voltage is non-linear.

The Klee Sequencer is processing a one bit pattern, which is controlling a VCO and the resonant MS-20 clone filter, which provides a sequenced backing for the video."

This synth is responsible for the legendary sound heard on so many classic records, from Phil Collins 'in the air tonight' , 'Mr blue sky' by ELO to New order 'blue monday' and many more, 'blade runner' soundtrack by Vangelis and of course Kraftwerk. The vocoder section, for me, is the best ever made. Then you have the greatest sounding analogue string synth ever, together with the incredible analogue human voice section. Add in the Roland stereo Chorus Ensemble section and you have one of the most beautiful sounding analogue synthesizers Roland ever built. It's crazy good...The vocoder also has an external input so you can feed anything into it such as a drum machine for example. Estimates vary about how many were of these were made. 1500-2000 seems the popular number quoted. Very rare Euro power 220/240 volt version. This is the MKII version"

Resonant Lowpass Gate Project PCBs Available

"This is a third cousin PCB that is a derivative of the famous Buchla 292c Lopass Gate. Don Buchla himself gave approval to this endeavor for us all to learn a bit more about analog synthesizer module design, and for this we owe him a debt of gratitude as a true scholar and gentleman. This is not the first, nor will it be the last Lopass Gate module to come out to the world. People have become transfixed on the magic of Vactrol's which are a combination of a resistor and LED in a light-tight package that seals out the light of the world yet somehow glows with an internal magic, that for the Synth_DIY crowd becomes hard to ignore."

Reason 4 Tutorial on Vocoder By The Beatmaking Housewife

"A vocoder, is an analysis / synthesis system, mostly used for speech in which the input is passed through a multiband filter, each filter is passed through an envelope follower, the control signals from the envelope followers are communicated, and the decoder applies these (amplitude) control signals to corresponding filters in the (re)synthesizer.

"Now that you have a basic idea of how control modulations are assigned using the Combinator rotaries and buttons, it should become apparent that completley new control configurations can be created. The four buttong controls on a Combinator are programmed in the same manner as the rotary controllers, but the modulations are fixed values assigned to either the on off state of the button."

VIRGIL - the FREE Pipe/Church Organ Synthesizer

YouTube via syntesen
"Levo Sound Tools presents VIRGIL - the world's first free pipe organ synthesizer.

"Organ synthesizer" means that absolutely no samples are used in the sound generation. Each tone is generated by 52 oscillators, which are on/off switchable. The pipes range from 64' profound (sub-sub octave) to 1' flageolet. There are also combination (mixture) stops, some of which fatten up the sound in unpredictable ways, as well as a tremulant.

To guarantee authenticity, the synthesizer is not limited to a 100% pitch pure pipe simulation; rather, the user can detune the pipes slightly to recreate that authentic pipe organ sound. On top of this, the pipe noise feature adds authentic pipe blowing noise. For good measure, we've thrown in a global low pass filter as well.

The quality of the synthesizer is selectable to guarantee low CPU usage on all systems. (10 tones with all stops enabled results in 12% CPU usage in 64-bit mode, 5% in 32-bit mode on a Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor)

______

VIRGIL is, and will always be free, but as the principal developer is a poor medical students, donations are very much appreciated. In return for a $5 donation, you will receive the pre-release version of VIRGIL used in the background music of this video.

All donations will be put to use in further developing VIRGIL, as well as, eventually, porting the synthesizer to Windows."

"This melodi was originally recorded by Joe Esposito and apparantly it was part of the soundtrack from "Flashdance". I recorded it in 2000 when I was an unemployed newly graduated electronics engineer. This is also the reason that it might not be 100% correctly interpreted. But I still find it rather charming.

Since I cannot recreate the circumstances under which it was recorded - I lived in another house back then and looked different myself too - I decided to record the video in a completely different environment. I am not usually in the habit of showing undressed men in my videos! But this sculpture which is placed near the beach in the Danish city Esbjerg is showing four oversized - and luckily not anatomically completed - concrete men overlooking the sea. It is called "Mennesket ved havet" ("Man meets the sea") and is made by the artist Svend Wiig Hansen.

The instrument I used was: Yamaha HE-8 (harmonies, chords, and bass), Technics SX-C600 (strings and vibraphone), Yamaha PSS-12 (chords), Kawai MS-20 (melodi), and Yamaha SX soundcard (arpeggios)."
