Inside an Alesis Adromeda A6

via Alan

"Most [of the images] are self explanatory except for the one of the two plastic thingies. This is the inside of the case moldings on the side. VERY CHEAP -- I seriously broke almost all of them when putting the screws back in. I don't see how Alesis didn't se this coming. The rest of the construction is top notch, though. Mine is a pre- Numark made in the USA model."

Roland TR-330 Rhythm Drum Synth

via this auction

"Identifed as Roland model TR-330. A little internet research tells me that this analog drum machine was first produced in 1973. Rhythms produced by the machine are: Waltz, Slow Rock, Rock Beat, Bossa Nova, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Beguine, Rhumba, March, and Swing.

A nice review with lots of information about the Roland TR-330 can be found at the following link"

Buchla 210e control and signal router

via this auction
"Here is the description from Buchla:
The Model 210e Control and Signal Router directs the routing of up to eight control voltages and eight audio signals. The two sections function independently.

Originally conceived of as an aid to store and retrieve patch routings, the 210e evolved into a module with some additional capabilities.

In the control voltage section, each of five outputs can be connected to any one of eight inputs. (This is the functional replacement for a bunch of patchcords.) If more than one input is routed to a single output, the result is averaged.

Similarly, the signal routing section allows connection of each of five outputs to any one of eight inputs (patchcord emulation). Additionally, this section provides the possibility for matrix mixing, in which an output can respond to
multiple inputs, with each connection independently scalable.

All 210e settings can be stored and retrieved under the direction of the model 225e or 206e preset manager, thus enabling the re-routing of signals for each preset."

Instructables Simple Sequencer

"One of the keys to making good music is mindless repetition. That is what the simple sequencer is great at. It does the same thing over and over again in an eight note sequence. You can adjust the frequency of the note, the duration of the note and the pause between notes. If you get really good, you can anticipate the next note and change things up on the fly. This little box is sure to provide endless hours of fun."

You can find instructions on this DIY sequencer on Instructables.

Marshall Allen and the Steiner EVI

via vgermuse: "photo from the NY Times of Marshall Allen, 85, at the Abrons Arts Center in NYC playing an early version of the Steiner EVI (all analog). The reviewer writes, "He also coaxed loopy frequencies from an electronic valve instrument, making use of a pitch-modulator knob; its timbre suggested a steelier, less vocal-sounding theremin." He is the focus of the Vision Festival happening this weekend in NYC." Update: here's a link to the article in the NY Times.

Note Marshall Allen played with Sun Ra in the Sun Ra Arkestra.

"Mr. Allen, who turned 85 last month, has been a member of the Arkestra for more than 50 years: he joined the ensemble almost at its origins, spearheading its reed section and faithfully minding the various edicts of its namesake leader. When he took the helm himself in the mid-1990s, after the deaths of Sun Ra and the tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, Mr. Allen set his sights on continuity. He has kept the band together and working, with one eye trained on the legacy of an expressly future-oriented music."

"Here, I play a bit with the touchpad on the Moog Voyager. I used LFO from the CP-251 to modulate the filter and wave shape while the built-in LFO modulates the pitch with a square wave. The Korg EMX-1 provides a simple kick drum to provide a beat which the LFO is synced to."

Tiracon 6V board set brought to life

YouTube via MusicMiK
"I recently got this board set from an internet auction for an interesting price. The seller told it's unused - which really might be true, as i didn't see any traces of screws or so on the boards.
It's just the digital board, analog board with voice boards and the display board. The power supply without the transformer was also included but not used here, everything is hooked up to the lab power supply currently.
The EPROMs were still okay (sure, i first dumped them :), some chips were broken, and in some places, there was a mechanical damage.
All in all got this far in 2 days and i think i will get this back to life as a usable synth again."

M-Audio Axiom Pro 49 MIDI Controller Keyboard: Who Is The Real Pro?

YouTube via gearwire
"The M-Audio Axiom Pro 49 is kind of a conundrum. Even though it adds "Pro" to its title, its features actually make things a lot easier for the user. Shouldn't it be geared towards the novice? And shouldn't actual professionals have to prove their worth by using MIDI controllers that shock them if they play the wrong note?"

Descent From Digitana Sequences

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide
"This work was one of the first musical compositions composed almost entirely on the Alesis Andromeda synthesizer. A basic rhythm patch was programmed on the Andromeda, and this then provided the backing for the multi-part sequences using a short sustain and hard-synched oscillators. The sequences introduce the tempo of the melody with these being backed by a warm string-like pad. The optimism of the piece soon changes as darker pitch modulations come into play with a nightmare of surreal bird samples invading the scene. The Andromeda sequences die away to leave the bird calls and a very dark bass oscillation. This synthesizer experimentation was one of the first to bring about a complete phrasal change from the optimistic plucked sequences to the darkwave tones of the bird passages. The visuals for the music were entirely composed using pure video synthesis and transformational linear modulations created by the Adobe Premier software. This was done for the creation of analogue-like video modulations using entirely synthetic means. The result is an unusual interwoven synthesizer combination blending analogue and sampled sounds with pure electronic video animations. The composition represents a tribute to the EMS Synthi 100 audio synthesizer and the EMS Spectron video synthesizer."

via Joel, who used the Micro Q editor, on the Waldorf list:
"It really is very hard to grok the full power of an instrument when you can only see into it from a tiny window. Well designed synth editors really let you see the big picture. Thanks also to the free MQeditor I recently found here I'm now able to really get serious about making new sounds on my MicroQ - it was fine from the front panel, but now I've come to understand the Modulation and routing sections much better, and to get a better feel for what my synth is capable of."

12DECODE Waldorf Microwave Editors for Macintosh

http://12decode.de/

"This page is about my system exclusive based sound editors for Waldorf’s MicroWave Synthesizers. The current version is 4.1
There is an editor for the original Microwave (aka Microwave I, with software version 2.0 installed) and an editor for the Microwave II (including the XT line).

The sound generating architecture of the Microwave II is very similar to the MicroWave I, except the different concept with the “modulation matrix” and the possibility to change many parameters simply by control change messages and by turning the little knobs manually, so system exclusive programming may not be so important."
