Minimoog Model D

via this auction
"Owned (and sold) by Adam Holzman, renowned keyboard player with Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Grover Washington jr., and many others; also currently Moog artist. You will be dealing directly with Adam. Note from Adam: I have used this Minimoog in the studio for over 20 years. It is reliable and sounds great. It is serial #6675. Notice it has the classic nylon pitch wheels, which are stronger (and thinner) than the corrugated plastic jobbies they switched to later. The cabinet is also made from real polished wood, not the painted plywood that also came later. This baby is definitely a classic. I bought it used in the early 80's, it was originally my 'back-up' Minimoog for touring (with my Los Angeles based band, The Fents). This Minimoog also appears on several of my studio recordings; check out the killer bass sound on the track 'Second World' from my CD "The Big Picture." I had a second set of CV and Gate inputs installed by American Electronics, (these guys went on to form Studio Electronics, who built the excellent 3rd party Moog spin-off, the Midi-Moog). This modification tracks CV more accurately than the stock input, and the Gate is a standard trigger, not the unusual "S" trigger which Moog employed back in the day, which means that this Minimoog will interface easily with most analog gear without any further modifications. This Minimoog is ideal for any kind of midi work, all you need is a midi-to-CV converter box (several different types of these converters are available). (The imperfections on the front panel and the scratches on the sides occurred before I owned it. The front panel overlay can probably be flattened by a hip technician with a heat gun, the side panels can be re-stained fairly easily.) This Minimoog was serviced a few weeks ago by E.A.R.S. (Expert Audio Repair Service) in New York City and it is in very good shape. All the pots have been cleaned, some switches have been replaced, and everything works fine."

JJ Abrams on Yamaha Portasound? Before you pass judgment, realize JJ Abrams is into synths.
video description:
"Here's the song we made for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Featuring Will Ferrell and JJ Abrams. Originally Aired 5/31/09"
Update via GRONDO 2001: "this can't be a portasound as portasounds only have mid-keys or mini-keys and this obviously a full size keyboard."
Funny, I never realized that until now. Makes sense, "Porta" as in portable.

TipTop Audio Z2040 Now Available

"The Z2040 is a powerful 4-Pole Low pass filter with a similar core to that of the SSM2040 Filter chip used in the Prophet 5 Rev2 synthesizer. Both the Z2040 discrete circuit and the SSM2040 integrated circuit are based on a US patent assigned to Oberheim Electronics in the 70s. However, the Z2040 includes additional circuitry to provide even more modulation capabilities not originally found in the SSM2040, extending its unique sound signature.

The Z2040’s sound spectra is wide and will excel over other filter types at creating bass lines, percussive elements, pads and drones. The three different regions of the Gain knob allow for a variety of tonal options. First, a reproduction of the SSM2040 ‘sweet’ sound appears from Min to 0db. A gain compensated Resonance to add punch appears just at 0db and a soft and hard clipping, as well as very high gain output appears at just beyond 0db to MAX.

The Z2040’s four modulation inputs are built to handle CV and audio signals, enabling deep modulation of the filter core and passing signals. A VC resonance input is provided to modulate and even clip the sine wave produced by the filter feedback loop. A Frequency Modulation input (FM) provides for dynamic filter sweeps and the unique VC-FM index provides modulation of the incoming FM signals. On top of that, the Z2040 provides an audio VCA that can be configured to act upon the input or the output of the filter.
The Z2040 uses a space saver design but will produce a ‘big’ sound."

Raglani Interview and Call for Help on Stolen Gear

This is a bit of a double post. First there is a great interview on Raglani in the River Front Times here. The article covers Raglani's use of synths. It also covers a very unfortunate event.

"On May 16, as Raglani was beginning his first U.S. tour at Brooklyn's experimental-music festival No Fun Fest, his van was burglarized and all of his electronic gear — synthesizers, effects pedals, speakers, merch and more, all valued at nearly $10,000 — disappeared while Raglani stopped for dinner.

Any musician or artist can sympathize with the devastation that accompanies such a loss; the sentimental value of losing, say, your first electric guitar or a journal full of sketches is normally as great as the financial hit. But for a musician like Raglani, who uses vintage analog synths alongside newer (and pricey) boutique gear, these instruments can't be replaced with a trip to Guitar Center."

The following is the list of gear that was stolen with serial numbers. If you spot any, contact Raglani at www.myspace.com/raglani or pegasusfarmsrecords at gmail.com. Of course check out the site for his music as well. And be sure to check out the interview.

Blofeld, Upright Bass and Sitar groove

Blofeld, Upright Bass and Sitar groove from Monomeat on Vimeo.

"Demonstration of user samples on Waldorf Blofeld in multi mode. The loop, upright bass and sitar are samples. There's no sequencing here just re-triggering multiple latched arpeggiators. The Moog is only acting as a controller for note and volume data per MIDI channel to create the arrangement in real-time."

On a personal note. I finally ordered my Blofeld Keyboard from Noisebug for an excellent price: $999. I ordered it Tuesday, they shipped same day and it arrives this Friday. I can't wait!!!! Noisebug rocks!
