Crystal Semi Modular Synth

YouTube via Synthman23
"The crystal semi modular synth description is a semi-modular software synthesizer featuring both subtractive synthesis and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. It offers abundant modulation control with over 90 parameters which may be modulated, multi-stage envelopes with graphical editors, extensive tempo sync of envelopes/lforates/delay times, built-in effects for chorus/flanging/comb filtering/echoes, and a band splitter for effects processing by frequency band. Not only that, Crystal has wave sequencing, granular synthesis, program morphing, MIDI learn, and imports soundfonts.

My review
One of my favorite synths! I use this all the time to make my trance music! Primarily I use it to make my leads, but i also use it for my pads/basslines.

Yuri Suzuki:JellyFish Theremin 2004

YouTube via MediaArtTube
"The movement of Jellyfish controls the sound, air- conditioning, the visual image and lighting.
Water is the element that possesses the most relaxing characteristics for human beings.
Jellyfish are the closest living thing to water that can be found on Earth.
I used jellyfish as the control center, since jellyfish are made up of 98% water, and I thought that the will of the water would be reflected in the movement of the jellyfish, if only a little.
If we were able to create a space controlled by jellyfish, wouldn't it be the ultimate place of relaxation?
I got the inspiration for this system from the Theremin which is the oldest electronic music instrument in the world. The Theremin is also an instrument which is as mysterious as a jellyfish.

Atonal Ring Modulated Rhythms

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide

"The music for this work was created by feeding in an arpeggiated sequence from a Korg Mono/Poly synthesizer into the external inputs of a Korg R3 synthesizer and applying oscillator sync and ring modulation with another oscillator. Phase effects and stereo reverb was applied to the final output signal. These arpeggiated sequences were then cut and edited to fit a rhythm track created on the Hammerhead Rhythm Station. A total of five separate sequences were cut and arranged from the chorused rhythms. Some sequences were direct ring-modulated arpeggiated tones from the Korg R3 itself. The arrangement included only those sequences that could provide the most interesting atonal combination. At the conclusion of the piece, the whole mixed track was sped up at the end with sampled segments from itself to bring about an elevated climax. A different rhythm output from the Hammerhead Rhythm Station was added at the start and the end of the completed mixed track.

The visuals were created using the Wave Warp function of Adobe Premier video editing software to create various linear geometric transformations of a black and white striped image. Several orders of modulation were applied using pulse waves and extreme amounts of amplitude to distort the territory of the image greatly. The idea was to create pure electronic video synthesis forms in black and white and to generate moire geometric distortions that would complement an atonal ring-modulated music track. Minimal colour elements were added as an animation effect.

The inspiration for this work comes from the music produced by the EMS Synthi 100 analogue modular synthesizer, and the EMS Spectron video synthesizer. Inspiration was also gained from the work of Woody Vasulka and his scan-processed videos using the Rutt-Etra Scan Processor."

"Cwejman VCO-6 sine synced by PlanB M15 square. VCO-6 output is then ring modded with M15 sine, then sent to PlanB M12 vactrol filter, which receives modulation Cwejman ADSR. Bass kick is Cwejman MMF-1 with modulation from PlanB M10. Other percussion is Doepfer A-117 6-osc output ring modded with Cwejman VCO-2RM osc1 sine square output, then passed through Makenoise QMMG. Sequence is Doepfer A-160/1 and A-152 through PlanB M14 and Bananalogue 3P, and Doepfer A-156 quantizer."

House Fans

"Sync mode Cwejman VCO-2RM to Metasonix R51. OSC1 (sine) goes to audio input, OSC2 (sine) goes to distortion input. Plan B M15 sine goes to other distortion input. Cwejman PH-4 modulates all three, and OSC2 pitch. Cwejman VCO-6 amplitude modulated with self oscillating MMF-1, through VCEQ, then audio panning the R51 output. Percussion is two outputs of the Doepfer A-117 ring modded with A-143-3, sent to Make Noise QMMG, and one audio pans the other. Sequencing is the usual A-160/161, Plan B ASR, M14, etc. This patch was made to accompany the sound of the house fans."

Why I Frac pt1

YouTube via wonkythomas
"Just a quik patch showing off 1(!) Blacet Research VCO, Binary Zone, Klangwerk, EG1, Window Comparator & Micro LFO. Little bit of seq'ing from the doepfer / MFB system, but all the sounds are Blacet!

I love this system so much & only half of it is up & running! With the VCO/MiniWave/Binary Zone combination a basic oscillator can make several 'voices' at once with ease.

Here the Klangwerk Balanced Modulator is working as a VCA, Binary Zone as a Frequency Divider creating octaves lower than the VCO. The high pitched sound is the Voltage Controlled waveform being modulated by a gated Micro LFO, the changes in dynamics are down to the Klangwerk being able to smoothly fade between processed signal & the clean input signal, when deployed as a VCA this creates a pretty unique performance control."

Why I Frac pt2

Cynthia Saw Animator Folded

YouTube via wonkythomas
"Very simple patch showing that the Cynthia Saw Animator is very much in that catagory of modules that makes it more than the sum of its parts.

Modules used; CGS / Metalbox Wave Multipler, CGS / Metalbox Psyco LFO, Blacet VCO & an MFB SEQ-02

Starts off with just the VCO, things start to get messy after I increase the "Fat" amount!

The Psyco LFO is patched to the VC Fat CV input on the Saw Animator, the Pulse output of the Cynthia is patched to input 2 of the CGS Wave Multiplier & LFO output #6 of the Cynthia CVs the Folds.

What I love about the Cynthia module is that it keeps the modulations musical, I could do the exact same thing by multing the sequencer CV into a VCLFO, then tuning it 'just so' but the Saw Animator gives you 6(!) LFOs which all follow the incoming VCO signal, the "Fat" amount & the modulation at the VC "Fat" input.

This is just one, very simple, application. A more traditional use would be the same set-up but with a VCF instead of the Wave Multipler but I don't got filters."

Reaktor drum machine with parameter locks from Peter Dines on Vimeo.

"This is a granular drum sampler I'm working on in Reaktor that has Elektron MachineDrum style parameter locks. I think it sounds pretty good so far. Note the ridiculously low CPU usage - 2 percent, not bad, ey?

At the moment, the knobs are used to write looping parameter automation per step, and this works great with Kore 2 hardware controllers, but entering percussion sequences must be done with the mouse. I've tried using a MIDI keyboard to enter data but it's hard and fiddly to get the exact velocity you want on a given step, and a pain to remove steps.

I'm going to wait till my Maschine arrives and use its drum pads to trigger sequence entry. The sequencer doesn't send MIDI yet, but the controller does and from everything I've heard it's a joy to use."

"The story as I understand it, and this is painfully paraphrased from Don Hassler's telling of the story in detail, is that at one point in time Carter Thomas constructed this Serge himself during a course at CalArts instructed by Serge Tcherepnin. Morton Subotnick had devised this synthesizer construction course in order to get electronic instruments under the students control earlier rather than later in their studies."

(samples on site)
The Polivoks for Ableton Live

The legendary Polivoks from Russia now available for Ableton Live!
All 5 original Polivoks waveforms where captured and integrated carefully into our unique Multiwaveform Oscillators. Each waveform is represented by 32 single samples that cover all five registers of the original Polivoks: 32´ | 16´ | 8´ | 4´ | 2´

Due to the semi-modular principle of Live we could extend the Vox Populi Synthesizer far beyond the original Polivoks layout. We designed 4 different types of Multiwaveform Oscillators capable of Waveform Shaping, Frequency Modulation, Amplitude Modulation and Pitch Modulation.
Also we created 24 additional oscillators containing further sets of multisampled Polivoks timbres. Each one of these 28 different oscillators is hot-swapable and can be used easily to extend the sound spectrum of the Vox Populi Synthesizer. Watch video here.

Variations on a tank

Another analog treasure from the eastern hemisphere.
The russian Elektronika EM-5 comes green and heavy like a battle tank but when taking a look closer it is more like a cancer. Protected by a 25 KG steel body it soon reveals its vulnerability. But once the cheap plastic keys, some transistors and other bowels had been fixed the Elektronika rewarded us with some lovely keyboard sounds not far from the Clavinet and a string section.
With the Tron-5 extension we have preserved these nice original sounds but also demonstrate that the original CAN sound like a tank. Among other things we added an adjustable suboctave and the distinctive key-off noise that is inherent to this keyboard.
Listen to the demos!

As a very special feature the Tron-5 extension includes some lightweight versions of the original sounds. So this extension can also be played on netbooks and older computers with nearly the same comfort.

JH Polymoog Resonantor Clone PCB Preview

via JH

"This was an easy one to layout.

And it will be an easy project to solder, this time!

And unexpensive, too. Depends on the potentiometers or sliders you're going to use. PCB will be 27 Euros as usual. Electronic components will be very unexpensive. Potentiometers, enclosure etc will make the biggest part of the bill here.

I've painstakingly taken care to preserve the character of the original, using the same low slewrate opamps, MOSFET switches, and DC bias (which results in very unsymmetric headroom) as the original. You can use modern opamps instead, of course. And there is plenty of space to use whatever capacitors you like, in the filter sections. No problem to go for a High End version with polystyrene caps and modern audio opamps, if you like. But you can - and I will, for my self - just build it like the original.

Send me an email if you're interested in this. If I get enough "resonance", I will start a PCB run in a month or so.

(No audio demos yet - I must first have one prototype made for myself!)
