a synth dream via John Levin

"Perhaps this is a sure sign I've been reading MATRIXSYNTH too long... I had a synth dream!

In my dream, I was involved in the making of a documentary on the significance of the Arp Odyssey to the San Francisco disco music scene of the 1970's.

There was a section of the dream that was about the importance of the PPC controllers on the Odyssey. Some guy had even modded his Arp Omni so that one of the pads on the PPC could control the filter cutoff. At this point, there was even a schematic.

Would the PPCs even work on an Omni? Who knows? It was a dream!

Later, I was at a party, in someone's kitchen. It was still the San Francisco disco scene of the 1970's. There were about 5 cats in the kitchen. More Matrix influence, clearly.

Calling Dr. Freud! Well, I made a dreamy image of a PPC w/ schematic for you too.

Cheers,
John"

Update via John in the comments: "p.s. credit where credit is due. I got the original images to make the dream art from http://www.arpodyssey.com/schematics.html"

Third Coast Festival Awards Prototype - Post Office Box Synth

YouTube via RothMobot
"We were hired to create the electronics for the Third Coast Festival's 2009 Awards. Each award will play a two minute segment of the winning documentary and will have a "normal" mode, a "bent" mode, and a "synth" mode. Each award will be housed in a custom made replica of a vintage radio.

The basic architecture is a circuit bent sampling mother board with a 555 timer chip oscillator daughter board. This particular example is playing a segment of a documentary about toy hacking produced by Delaney Hall, and contains an interview with Tommy and myself.

This "cardboard" prototype is an intermediate stage to check the functionality of the components and to debug the internal wiring scheme."

Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog Exibition Updates

"Exhibition features Keith Emerson's Legendary “Monster Moog” Modular Synthesizer through October 18th, 2009

CARSLBAD, CA/ASHEVILLE, NC – The Museum of Making Music (Carlsbad, CA), in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has opened Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog exhibition, to run through April 30, 2010. The exhibit is the first of its kind, marking the first public display of the artifacts from Bob Moog’s archives and an examination of the impact of his work on the world of music.

MONSTER MOOG INSTALLATION
On August 30th, Keith Emerson's (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Nice) mammoth “Monster Moog” modular synthesizer was added to the exhibit after it was featured the previous evening in a musical celebration of the exhibit opening by Emerson and Erik Norlander. Emerson used this remarkable instrument on numerous recordings over the past 40 years, including his solo in “Lucky Man” (1969), possibly the most popular synth solo in history. He also used the synthesizer on countless world tours and is generally credited with pioneering the use of the Moog modular as a touring musician.

The “Monster Moog” began as a modest system, but grew over time as Emerson
requested that Moog create custom additions for his touring instrument, including extra modules, custom sample-and-hold, and several pre-sets, an innovative addition for that time. The synthesizer grew into a massive cabinet of five sections and over 75 modules. It stands more than four feet above its special base – almost 8 feet high. Its sound is noticeably clearer and stronger than any other keyboard Emerson plays – it is an instrument of significance and legend, and arguably the most famous synthesizer of all time.

Bob Moog and Keith Emerson enjoyed a special relationship of toolmaker and musician that grew in to a lifelong friendship. Moog is noted for listening to musician's needs and technical specifications which he then used to improve his instruments: This dynamic is explored throughout the Waves exhibit.

Moog Exhibit Covered by The San Diego Troubadour

Read the full article at The San Diego Troubador.
"At first glance, the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California, appears to be the embodiment of a paradox. The ultra-modern facility, nestled amidst a sparkling collection of equally new structures, houses a whole assortment of musical instruments and artifacts that date back many decades. The various guitars, ukuleles, drums, keyboards, horns, gramophones, and amplifiers could easily merit the term "antique" or "vintage." In all honesty, the same might be said about some of the items in the new exhibit, "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Bob Moog," which opened on August 29 and continues through April 30, 2010. A good number of them showed technological hallmarks of a bygone era like patch cords, reel-to-reel tape units, and oscilloscopes. Yet to simply characterize these as artifacts of yesteryear does a disservice to the forward-thinking visionary that was Dr. Robert A. Moog.

His innovations revolutionized the way music is made."

Be sure to check out the Bob Moog Foundation for updates. Looks like they rolled out a new site design.

Plan B Model 28: Messing around with the new firmware

via the Plan B list:

"All,

As I mentioned there's an upgrade of the Model 28 firmware in the works, I've had a chance to play around with it and I'd like to share that with you.

Although the 28 was designed as a master clock as opposed to a external frequency multiplier, the new firmware introduces a sync mode which increases the accuracy when processing external signals.

The following audio example has four tracks:

1) The first is Logic's software sampler (Xylophone) being driven by a M37 LFO which was converted to a midi quarter note string via an Analogue Systems Rs-200.

2) The second track, which appears in the right channel is analog patch playing quarter notes which is also driven by the same clock as the software synth in track 1, once it was recorded by Logic - so no M28 in the mix yet.

3) The third track is appears in the left channel and is an octave up from track 2, and is driven by the M28 quarter note output which is being paced by the same recorded clock as track 2.

4) The forth track, the ring modulated thuddy one - is in both channels and is the M28's serial output being driven by a M24 random voltage that is selecting whether a 1/4, 1/8 or 1/8 trip is being passed to the output.

The first thing you hear is the software synth, then track two fades in the right channel, followed by track 3 on the right and finally the random serial output with the thuddy beats.

here's the link

You can have a look at what you're listening to here [pictured]

One of our beta testers, Don Kim, did another sample recently:

http://virb.com/ibdk/audio/441725

his comments:
'It synced to midi notes much better than before [without the update] that freakout that used to happen while it was trying to find the sync. It just seems to take a measure and it syncs. I added some more fun by changing the notes it was syncing to. Simple polyrhythmic type stuff. 3 tracks of M28 running 3-5 envelopes. two voices using the midi click notes to show where the clock is (if you can't figure which ones, then I think it's syncing well). Also added a couple drum machine tracks using Logic as the master midi clock just to see how it all syncs with external gear.'"

Cumberland, R.I. (Oct. 2, 2009) – Numark, the world’s leading manufacturer of DJ technology, announces NSFX, an effects controller for use with the company’s NS7 premium software-performance controller. Numark developed NS7 and NSFX in strategic partnership with software developer Serato. “Serato and Numark have worked closely to make sure that the integration between NS7, NSFX and ITCH remains as seamless as it always has been,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Numark. “We think both existing and future NS7 owners will be thrilled by the extended functionality that NSFX provides.”

NSFX will be available from musical instrument and DJ retailers Q4, 2009.
