Reason 4 Tutorial - Using all 4 of Thor's Inputs and Outputs - Part 3 of 3

YouTube via SirSedricMusic. Part 2 here, part 1 here.
"This video shows the routing concepts and techniques needed to use all 4 of Thor's inputs and outputs to make really complex, evolving and dynamic synth patches based around Thor's expansive filter sections. Thor itself is an absolute beast, but when used in combinations of other forms of synthesis and other devices it's true power is unlocked.

Here, we're using 2 Malstrom synths and some new routing and cabling options in the first patch to show how this needs to be set up. The second part of the video is a creative patch that I made that shows how to truly make Thor an instrument like one you've never seen. One with the ability to change the entire scope of the patch and sound on-the-fly. Watch the Annotations in the video for a full explanation of the internal Thor routing I used for the second patch, I didn't have enough time to talk about it in the video.

My Blog and Music Website for interested folks -
http://www.SirSedricMusic.com

Any suggestions on future topics would be greatly appreciated. I'll try my best to make it happen so, seriously, get at me! I'm thinking of doing one on ReGroove or the Matrix Pattern Sequencer.... or maybe more on Thor!

As always, thanks for watching!"

AKAI MPC-5000 Sampler

YouTube via 7sick0Productions
"Powerful and versatile
The MPC5000 is the first MPC ever to include 8-track streaming hard disk recording, a 20-voice, 3-oscillator analog synthesizer with arpeggiator, a new sequencing engine with 960 ppq resolution, pad and track muting and mixing, 64 continuous sample tracks. There's even a new effects engine with four effects buses and two effects per bus.

Drum/phrase sampler, large display
You get a 64-voice drum/phrase sampler with 64MB memory ? expandable up to 192MB. The display is twice the size of the MPC2500 and MPC1000 so waveforms appear crystal-clear. Integrated Chop Shop 2.0 now supports stereo chops and Patched Phrases. The MPC5000 is the first MPC to include Random and Cycle sample playback in addition to velocity Zone Play. A turntable preamp is also included.

In-the-box production
The MPC5000's virtual analog synth eliminates need for external analog synth modules or buggy software based synthesizers. Its 8-track direct to disk recorder lets you produce your whole song in the MPC and then mix it down with the internal sequenced programs and any input thru material. Add the optional CD/DVD drive and you can then burn an audio or data CD or your mix. Over 650MB of premium-quality sounds from Loopmasters are included to get you up and running with pro-quality production in seconds"

Tiptop Audio: Z-DSP depth

flickr by Analogue Haven

"One more photo of the Z-DSP, on the development "bench". This photo gives an idea of the depth of the module. Most manufacturers these days are trying to make modules which are shallow in size. This leads to lighter, thinner cases as well, and gives us more room to stock modules and ship them safely. LINK."

Chimera Synthesis bc8 micro-synthesizer

via this auction
"The maker describes the bC8 as "probably the smallest production synthesizer in the world and certainly the cutest." That's probably about right. This thing is only 2.75 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, but they packed in a hand-assembled gold-plated circuit board, eight potentiometers, a stereo mini-plug, a push-button control, four LED's, and a battery holder (it takes three AAAs).

The maker says: "Sophisticated digitally based oscillators are housed on the DSP as well as an innovative recording system and internal control voltage patching. Choose between single-shot and repetive envelope generator modes; use the separate ATTACK and RELEASE knobs to create long and soulful drones; select the recording system to record and play back complex patterns of control knob movement, speed up or slow down the pattern playback to add extra glide detail or confusion, override any of the controls during playback to adapt, complicate or simplifiy your composition."

More description is here.

This was one of the last batch of bc8s made, and Chimera Synthesis says they have no plans to make more. If you followed the saga, you'll know that it was almost impossible to get one even when they were being made. I waited about six months for this one, then realized I really need more definite pitch control (read: keys, and polyphony) for what I want to do.

You can hear the bc8 in action played by my friend Opsysbug on YouTube"

Marion MSR-2 Analog Synthesizer - RARE (Oberheim MSR2) A- 01307

via these auctions

"Tom Oberheim (of Oberheim synthesizer fame) founded Marion Systems in the early 1990s to develop a mainframe modular synthesizer that was planned to accomodate differerent synthesis technologies as plug-in boards. The MSR-2 chassis, which is 1U rackmountable, supports 2 plug-in boards. The subtractive analog ASM was the only plug-in board ever offered for the MSR-2 -- it offers 8 voices (16 HROs) of analog synthesis using Oberheim's new DCO-based HRO (High Resolution Oscillator) technology with continuous waveshaping to create waveforms that bridge the gap between the usual saw/square offerings. A derivative of this CEM chip-based HRO design lives on today in Dave Smith's Evolver and other DSI instruments.

A slightly less expensive version of the MSR-2 was sold as the Pro Synth which included a single ASM board but I don't believe the Pro Synth was expladable like the MSR-2. Like most MSR-2s, this unit has one 8-voice ASM board, so it has room for another ASM board in the 1U chassis if you can track one down. If two ASM boards are installed, they can be used as one 16-voice (32 HRO) synthesizer, or they can be layered.

The best features of the MSR-2 are the filter section with very powerful FM capabilities and the deep modulation routings offered -- not surprisingly, they are very similar to the modulation capabilities of Oberheim's Matrix 6 and Matrix 12 synthesizers which preceeded the Marion. Also, even though the unit only has a few knobs, it is very easy to program even with complicated patches. The MSR-2 operating system is very similar to that of E-mu's Proteus line -- very logical."

Signal Generation Sequences

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide
"This purely electronic original atonal composition was created without the use of any kind of synthesizer or musical generator. The combinational signal sources were recorded from the Adobe Audition signal generator function to generate fundamental sine, triangle or square waveforms and their associated harmonics as chosen from the software. Various waveforms were recorded with different initial and final frequencies and modulation attributes. Some waveforms had period rests inserted to create short frequency bursts, with some frequency segments being pitch-shifted to create pseudo-arpeggiated patterns. These sequences were processed with light chorus, flanging or reverb. A small number of waveforms were generated using the DTMF signal function - similar pulses (but modified) to digital dial tone telephone signals. Three first-order sequences were mixed. The first sequence incorporated many spliced segments sequenced by the aid of a light rhythm pattern created on the Hammerhead Rhythm Station. The second sequence included several spliced patterns but without the rhythm track. The last sequence was a complex ring-modulated cascade of rising and falling sine waves added to further ring-modulated sine waves. A simple arpeggiated chordal pattern functions to conclude the work. These three first order sequences were mixed with overlap edits and re-mixed and equalised at specific regions along the timeline to emphasize particular frequencies. The result is an abstract, dark and atonal electronic composition reminiscent of the style and execution explored by some of the early electronic music pioneers who used signal generators and magnetic tape recorders to splice together complete compositions without the use of a keyboard or other music interface. The visuals are a mixture of video imagery combined with oscilloscopic modulations performed by the Adobe Premier WaveWarp function and utilizing second-order modulation processing and colour manipulation."

Dewanatron Melody Gin with Machinedrum Impulse

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"We're having some fun with the Dewanatron Melody Gin. The Melody Gin's envelope is being triggered by the Elektron Machinedrum's Impulse machine. The Impulse machine allows you to send out gate pulses which can be super handy. The Melody Gin's audio is patched into the Machinedrum and we're using a bit of the built in reverb. The Melody Gin is a truly original synthesizer, hand-built by Leon and Brian Dewan in New York. It's basically a two oscillator, four LFO synth with cross modulation, an envelope and some other really neat features like the "Slice" function."
