Tiptop Audio Z-DSP Experiments on The Stretta Procedure

"I'm one of the lucky few beta testers of the new Tiptop Audio Z-DSP eurorack module, and boy is it a lot of fun. The Z-DSP is a lot like the Tiptop Audio Z5000, except embiggened. A lot. There are three CV controlled parameters per program. There is a feedback loop that you can tap into on the front panel so you can insert a filter or whatever module you can think of inside a part of the DSP process that is usually closed to tinkering. You can change the personality of the DSP by inserting a different card on the front panel. You can even voltage control the clock. This is serious sound-mangling mayhem."

Akai ASQ10 Sequencer - Rare Sequencer from the MPC60

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This is an amazing condition Akai ASQ10 sequencer. This is the sequencer only version of the infamous MPC 60 sampling drum machine.

This is a very rare unit and a must for anyone who loves Roger Linn's Masterpieces, the MPC 60 or MPC 3000. It beats the pants off the MPC2000, Mpc1000 or Mpc2500 when it comes to quality of construction. Here are some of the specs---
1. 60,000 note capacity
2. 99 tracks, 99 sequences, 20 songs(made up of 256 sequences/steps)
3. Assign 1 or 2 midi channels to each track
4. Built in SMPTE generator, 7 sync modes
5. Powerful looping abilities in play and record mode
6. Step edit mode and step entry recording
7. Flexible and powerful editing, quantize, and transposing abilities
8. Built in disk drive
9. Auto punching
10. Time displayed in both real time and SMPTE time
11. 2 midi ins, 4 midi outs (64 midi channels at once!)
12. A huge display, even by todays standards
13. Can play two sequences at once
14. 2 foot switch inputs, 1 metronome out for its built in metronome, sync in and out"

FARFISA SYNTORCHESTRA

via this auction

"The Farfisa Syntorchestra is an Italian analog keyboard/synthesizer from 1975. It was used by Klaus Schulze on his album Moondawn, by Ash Ra (Ashra Tempel) and by Vangelis.

Basically, it is a monophonic synthesizer with some presets which can be modified and a polyphonic section. These two sections can be also combined and slightly detuned (intervals are also possible) to sound like a 2-VCO monophonic synth."

TLN-867 Tuner & Headphone Monitor

"The TLN-867 Tuner & Headphone Monitor combines an A440 reference tone generator, a headphone amplifier, and a beat frequency indicator all in a 1U module. The A440 generator is none other than David Brown's excellent DJB-A440 Reference Oscillator, a super stable digital A440 tone generator."

Voltage Controlled Passacaglia, Pages 1 & 2, by Paul Hembree (NWEAMO)

YouTube via PHIntermedia
"Performed on the infamous CRuNCh lab 1972 Moog Modular synthesizer, with video projection of an attached oscilloscope. Executed from a score with parametric envelopes assigned to different performers. Rough synchronization is achieved with stop-watches, and four short sections in the piece (each about a minute long) allow for some controlled improvisation.

Paul Hembree, Chris Rippey, Steve Snowden, and Curtis Peel, performers.

Performed at the New West Electronic Arts and Music Organization Festival, Boulder Edition, 2007.

Also thanks to Brandon Vaccaro and Sean Brady for help with the MAX panning patch (the only digital aspect of the work... sadly we didn't have enough voltage controlled amplifiers, nor enough mixer channels on the Moog to produce 4 channel spatizalization)."

Voltage Controlled Passacaglia, Pages 3 & 4, by Paul Hembree (NWEAMO)

Update via Paul Hembree in the comments:
"I posted a page of the score on my blog if you are interested in seeing what the players are reading from. "Staves" on the score look similar to the output of an envelope generator, or to the automated controller/parameter lanes in Reason or ProTools." [LINK]

Free software scope/spectrum analyzer

via Adam S

"I just finished this application which was an assignment for a course I'm taking in audio programming. While not directly synth-related, I think it's a pretty good substitute for a real scope. In fact, my modular was the main testing tool and I made sure to make the scope-mode trigger on positive zero-crossing so as to capture waveform contours. I hope some synth enthusiasts find this useful and will provide me some feedback."

"Roland RS 505 , the ultimate analogue string synthesizer. Separate bass , synth section and of course strings give you a much wider palette of sound from which to create some wonderfully thick and rich classic analog sounds and very big bass sound! Comes with the fantastic sounding roland ensemble effect (stereo output) based on roland's dimension D chorus rack. External input enables you to plug in any instrument and use this great effect."

SonicProjecs V-Machine Bundle with BCR2000

YouTube via virtualoberheim
"http://www.sonicprojects.ch/vmbundle/

Playing and tweaking sounds with the following setup:

- SM Pro Audio V-Machine
- SonicProjects VM Bundle
- Behringer BCR2000
- Korg DW8000 (only used as master keyboard)

Have a look at the used controller templates:

OP-X:
http://www.sonicprojects.ch/vmbundle/...

Stringer:
http://www.sonicprojects.ch/vmbundle/...

The master keyboard (Korg DW8000) is connected by MIDI cable to the V-Machine. The Behringer BCR2000 controller is connected by USB cable to the V-Machine (which offers two USB connectors). The SonicProjects VM Bundle is installed on the V-Machine and produces the sound including effects. The line outputs of the V-Machine are directly connected to an amplifier (using the green jack cables) which drives a pair of Yamaha NS-10 speakers. The audio of the video was recorded with the integrated room microphone of the video cam.

The installed SonicProjects VM Bundle is a bundle of adapted versions of OP-X (a virtual analog synth), Stringer (a sample based vintage string machine emulator), two custom made effect plugins (reverb and delay) as well as two banks with many ready to play presets in VFX format.

The VM Bundle also contains a BCR2000 toolkit that offers a custom sysex preset for the BCR2000 that matches the pre-mapped versions of the banks. After loading the sysex preset from a MIDI sequencer into the BCR2000 the setup can be immediatly used and offers a knob or button for every single parameter of OP-X and Stringer without the need of manual configuration. The BCR2000 toolkit also includes two printable templates that show which parameter is mapped to which BCR control.

This setup can serve as a complete hardware synth replacement and allows for tweaking and programming sounds as it used to be in former days, with a hardware control for each single function.

Furthermore - and this is even better than in a normal analog synth with knobs - the knobs and buttons on BCR2000 update automatically to the values of the new presets on preset change using MIDI feedback (has to be activated in the V-Machine before). This allows for tweaking parameters without annoying value jumps.

So this setup is a real dream offering immediate playing and tweaking fun which a usual pc/mouse setup is far away from. It's also a great leightweight and cheap solution for the stage.

This video is also available in a long version where in the intro is shown how to load the sysex preset into the BCR2000:
