MAKE presents: The Capacitor

YouTube via makemagazine. A look inside one of the parts used to make our synths and sound devices.
The video includes how to make a capacitor.
"Simple yet effective, they come in a dizzying array of forms and materials. Vital to so many circuits for storage, timing, and filtration - the mighty capacitor!

My Very Used Kawai R-50 (Presets)

YouTube via sebasstian33
"One of my all time favorite drum machines. I own two nicknamed Oskar & Felix. One is an R-50 the other an R-50e. I had purchased a sound chip and installed it in Oskar so he sounds a little different than a regular R-50. These machines were a major part of the early Kill Switch...Klick sound. These are the preset rhythms from the machine."

here are the modifications:

1. 2- rotary pad select banks on vintage chicken head knobs

2. 2- trigger rate knobs

3. trigger rate indicator lights via vintage dialco led lenses (lights always on for continuity)

4. 2- trigger lock switches

5. 2 momentary red trigger buttons

6. overall sample rate (pitch) of drum sounds on knob (does not effect midi or tempo)

7. power indicator blue vintage jewel lens with bright led lighting

8. 19 bending switch array (various effects, drum mangles, bit crushers, digital aliasing, filters, etc)

9. new lithium memory battery installed with battery clip mod for easy replacement (battery should last 10-15 years)

10. ac adapter included (north american countries only, if you will be using a convertor and want me to include the adapter for shipping to your country or need more info about the kind of adapter please contact me prior to bidding. you will need a proper adapter as this is a ac power supply and has a smaller barrel type connector then most adapters.

all original functionality retained with all modifications deactivated

all buttons, sliders, menus, menu and jacks has been tested to make sure everything on the unit is fully operational. just a few menu buttons require a little more pressure to operate then the others but everything checks out and is fully operational.

pdf and bend diagram jpeg emailed to winning bidder

this interface is a design to optimize the live playability of the original user interface as well as making the most use of the onboard sequencers as well. the switch array was chosen over a patch system as patching is a bit cumbersome with a rhythmic device.seems like patching is great for set and forget patches but not rhythmic sound manipulation in real time as there are quite alot of variants that can be used at once. the switches were selected to be stable, to provide the most array of sound manipulations, and to avoid redundancy.

the triggering system can be used alone or in conjunction with the onboard pads or with use of the onboard step sequencer. the triggering offers machine gun speed control of drum rolls to a continous control of speed to several seconds via the rate knobs. this allows some interesting drum patterns to be played or recorded on the sequencer in real time as well as some strange polyrhythms to occure. if you are using midi tap tempo you can slave the sequencer and your recorded or live beat creations to tap tempo.

drum pad sounds are selected via chicken head knobs and triggered either momentary with the push of the buttons or locked with the switches. the rate knobs are always flashing so you know where the drum beat lands the moment you activate the drum sounds.

this interface is meant for control and manipulation in real time but is also designed to play chaotically both tonally and rhythmically as well.

midi implementation is well done by alesis as well as customizing pans, sound setups and patterns. this makes it good to integrate in your midi studio or as a stand alone unit."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - HELLRUNNER - kawasaki delay synth

YouTube via manufacturedZ3R0. Drones get good at the :50 mark on. circuit bent on Ebay
"Similar to my older kawasaki keys with extreme pitch, distortion and additional atari punk console. But now fitted with a pt2399 delay circuit. This vid shows the kind of atmospheres and drone you can make with the delay. The delay is set to be able to sweep to much longer intervals that it was meant for which has the bonus of causing the signal to degenerate into harsh glitching. By holding the notes on the keyboard and tweaking the delays feedback and time some huge sounds can be made. On top of this the APC can be faded in and out of them mix for some interesting effects. Ten minutes of it here with a quick demo of the extreme pitch on the drums at the start. This is a very good source of material for experimental genres, noise and drone........

Thanks to wrongbot for the pt2399 layout. Check the end of the vid for contact details."

Octavian Keyboard Calculator Now with Sound

via bitnotic

"We just wrapped up our first update to Octavian. The main feature is the one that almost everyone requested, which is sound. We went to our favorite studio, SuperDigital, in Portland, OR and sampled their Kawai baby grand. We hand-tweaked each note to give it just enough body and a little hammer action, and put in some slick mixing to play back eight note chords without wrecking your iPhone or iPod touch speakers."

Trommelmaschine Mk. 1 - Mechanical drum machine

"A working prototype for a large scale sculpture, which will use petrol engines, crankshafts and pistons to play percussion.

This prototype machine uses DC motors to drive Lego Technic crankshafts and pistons which strike piezo transducers to trigger drum sounds from a drum machine circuit board. There are no Lego kits or anything involved in this, it is all hand built.

Thanks to elastic band drive belts this machine works sporadically, as you can see in the video, but it proves the theory, allowing me to move on to developing the large scale 'Trommelmaschine'."

Elektron Machinedrum triggering BOSS SYB-5 Bass Synthesizer pedal

Elektron Machinedrum triggering BOSS SYB-5 Bass Synthesizer pedal from lefthandedheroes on Vimeo.

"Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 UW GND-SN machine triggering BOSS SYB-5 bass synthesizer pedal. The GND-SN machine routed to an individual out -> Boss SYB-5 -> INP-EA machine for filtering.
Just realized that the first few minutes had that stupid delay on.
All other sounds are machinedrum GND-SN sine machines!
At the time of recording I was first time trying out the pedal, only discovering the possibilities.
The video is to show what kind of sounds you can get triggering the SYB-5 with a GND-SN and was put into an electronic context.
Not a musical statement.
The video was shot with a Nokia N95, the sound quality is far from amazing.

The Wacom tablet has 5 degrees of hi-res expressive freedom (see below for mappings). Very promising, this is just a quick little study... Cheers.
