Experience Mobile Mobile

Experience Mobile Mobile from James Théophane Jnr on Vimeo.

"Work asked me to do something for their Christmas card. I work for an Interactive Agency.

To cut a long story short, after a company-wide upgrade the agency had a lot of old mobiles gathering dust. We took these, built and hoisted a gigantic interactive chandelier/mobile that plays Christmas jingles in our reception.

To add a little xmas spice to the mix, anyone can go online and enjoy annoying the hell out of people waiting around in the reception, by playing the thing live from their web browser: xmas.lbi.co.uk

Details on how we made it and some behind the scenes content are available on my blog: theophane.co.uk/mobile-mobile

Mobile Mobile has been made as a semi-permanent hanging (exhibition) space. In January the mobiles will be replaced with another hanging media, then updated month in, month out.

Mobile Mobile is just one in a line of many great lo-fi art/build concepts; from the Design Museum's Aquarium, Digital By Design, Troika and The Cloud, the Printer Bleeping Thingy (I can't remember who did it), all the great work by W+K, and of course, AKQA's wonderful microwaves from last Christmas.

Looking forward to many more to come.

Good Cause: One of the largest problems facing the developing world is a lack of trained physicians. MoCa, is a health screening system for developing countries using mobile (cell)phones and open source technologies. See mocamobile.org"

Atomic Shadow - Greetchplug Berna Album

You might remember Berna from Greetchplug in this prior post.

Atomic Shadow wrote in to let me know he has recorded an album primarily featuring Greetchplug's Berna: "The project Berna album by Atomic Shadow is complete. All twelve tracks were done with Berna software by Gleetchplug. Most of the tracks were done in real time as semi-improvisations with only the field recordings used in the virtual tape recordings prepped beforehand. Track #3 had on overdub of Wine Glasses from Mtron Pro by GForce Software and track #12 had an overdub of the faux theremin from a Kaos Pad 2.

Moog Modular Synthesizer

via this auction

"Incredible custom rack-mounted Moog Modular synthesizer. The piece was custom racked by Steve Masucci from tested modules. The ultimate in vintage synthesizers. 100% working and in very good physical condition. The unit has two 901b oscillators and a 901a controller - the 901s sound the best of all the moog modular oscillators - in my opinion. Other modules include the venerable 904a low pass filter, voltage controlled amplifier, envelope generator, noise, and mixer. The modules are in two pieces in black front panels. The synthesizer will be sold as-is due to the vintage nature of the instrument. The instrument is approximately 19" tall (by 19" wide). The modules are powered by a modern International Power Supply with a power switch and fuse added next to the mixer (the glowing red light indicates that the unit is on). The harness and power to all the modules work. There are paper tags stuck on the back of the modules: 901a Serial # 1083 JUL6 1968 R.A. Moog Co Trumansburg N.Y., 901b Serial # 1255 JUL6 1968, 901b Serial #1254 JUL6 1968, Model 902 no serial number but printed TEST STANDARD also R.A. Moog Co Trumansburg N.Y. The envelope generator is fairly new - labeled ©1996 Moog Music Inc. There is no label on the 904a or the 903 but both appear to be vintage and in excellent condition. All the modules except for the Envelope Generator read R.A. Moog on the front panel. The envelope generator reads Moog with the icon in the first o."

Simmons SDS electronic drums

Update: "The drum synth is the SDS-IV (or 4 if you like). It's the smaller of the early models of Dave's design. Designed by Simmons and sold under the MusicAid name. The most massive kicks known to mankind! :D
[bottom image via http://www.simmons.synth.net/]

I have the bigger brother SDS-III too but this was easier to hook up. Two pads is enough when you're four years old (soon).

http://www.simmonsmuseum.de/?area=devices&view=details&id=10

The output of the duo was... experimental, to say the least. :D"

ELEKTRONIKA EM-25 Analog Synth String Machine

via this auction

"EM-25 is an interesting Soviet string-synth that looks and feels like a curious cross between Moog Opus 3 and ARP Solina. Like other Soviet synths, has got a distinct sound of its own and can easily compete with synths that have grown to become classics.

• 49-note (C-C) split multi-keyboard.
This auction synth was made in May 1989 in USSR. Serial number 09173.

• This seems to have appeared in two very different forms. Both have sets of sliders to the left of the keyboard and in three sections behind it; but one is a neater, flatter machine with a carrying handle at the front, while the other has fold-down legs, a little Farfisa-like, and a reverse-color keyboard for the bottom two octaves.

• EM-025 HAS A THREE MAIN SOUND SECTIONS : STRINGS, ORGAN, BRASS. All 3 sections You can use as independent sound or these will be mixed in any combination of 1, 2 or 3 sources with select buttons.

Electronika EM - 25 is a synthesizer-strings that has 3 timbre sections: stringed - contrabasses, violoncellos, violins, organ-registers ("16'","8'","4'","2'"), wind-trombones, trumpets.

Wind instruments section:
generator of curved with controls: ATTACK, DECAY, SUSTAIN.
modulator with controls: RATE, DELAY, VIBRATO
controlled filter with controls: ENVELOPE, MODULATOR, CUTOFF, ACCENT
filter run mode -mono or polyphonic

There is also a possibility to split the keyboard to 2 section (with setting up different timbres of sounding)

Specifications:
— Number of octaves in a keyboard, 4 1/12
— In audible range, 9 1/12
—Power consumption max, 30V*A
— Dimensions, 890x355x102 mm (35'x14'x4')
— Weight without soft case, 15 kg (approx. 33 Pounds)
— Also contains 1.126 grams GOLD materials, 6.143 SILVER materials"

• There is a one master oscillator in this instrument. Due to this oscillator a possibility of instrument detuning in the process of operation is eliminated.

• Because of split of the manual into 2 sections, the volume of each group may be adjusted.

FILTER GENERATOR IS FOR BRASS SECTION ONLY.

• Connection on the rear panel: Two different gain Audio OUTPUTS (one 0db, second -20db) with standard 1/4' jack, phones out on 5-DIN, additional IN/OUT sockets for something like soviet kind of Midi, works only between soviet instruments, power wire connection (220/240V), fuse (0,5A) ."
