Just read this on Palm Sounds. Apparently all reference to the Akai iPK25 featured in these posts is MIA on the Akai website. The original press release came from this link: http://www.akaipro.com/content217667. Note the Synth Station is still listed on their site. Anyone know what's up? It would be unfortunate if the iPK25 never comes out. I was looking forward to it but then I kind of wonder what happens when the new Apple slate comes out. I'm guessing not everyone with an iPhone or iTouch will get the slate, so there should be a market for both, although one controller that can dock either would be ideal.

I wondered at the time if there was something amiss about that product. No 'Made for iPod' sticker for example, which was a big red flag - maybe it simply was never legit and was being driven by jailbroken devices and they hoped to just drive it through with Apple on the back of a very public launch? The fact that the 'slide-in' slot for the iPhone was too big made me think it was intended to be multi-purpose (maybe iPhone plus Android tablet?), and if so how could it work with a (mythical) Apple authorization chip in the datapath? Also I notice that of the machines on display, only one seemed to actually work - most video of the unit only showed the iPhone screen being played, not the physical keyboard.
ReplyDeleteSo, lots of conjecture on my side, but there were enough red flags for me to be concerned - and now both products (Akai and Ion) have just vanished.
I hope they come back, I want one ...
