TECHNICS SX-WSA1R Acoustic Modelling Synth

via this auction

Curious how these sound compared to the Yamaha and KORG physical modeling synthesis.

Update via spunkytoofers in the comments: "technics had a large number of synth romplers and d-50 style keyboards.

the wsa is way more friendlier to program then any of the yamaha vl synths but probally due to the simpler nature of the wsa. sampled attack, body resonance was modelled by complex filters. the yamaha computed the attack as well which is taxing on processors. the trade off was polyphony. with exception to the vl1m it was monophonic with the yamahas. the vl1 can handle two but what you get is total expressive control and realistic physical reactions from instruments: reeds squeak. trumpets crack. penny whistles will break the octave by overblowing etc.

the vl's have better outputs then the wsa and the wsa always seemed a bit thin sounding to me, but it always could distinguish itself in a mix. the wsa was pretty bad for wind control. you'd think that they'd keep that in mind while designing the synth. the mono legato mode requires a keyboard to activate (slurring between two notes) so it could never sound smooth in realism for me.

i'd hate to program the vl from scratch. the editor is a bunch of text boxes. patchman has a good set of wind controller sounds he's made for professional use but if you want to tap into the exotic possiblities you'll need to edit it yourself. total mayhem.

my vote for the ultimate physical modelling would be the vl1m. still very expensive and even really rare. the vl70 is still available though.

perhaps you've heard a few of the stock demos presets by this guy? there's a few exotic sounds demonstrated: http://www.kbspace.com/vl1m/audio/index.html

patchman also has some vl1m demos on his site too. http://www.patchmanmusic.com/yamahaVL1.html

he also has some patches for the korg z1 and a few other physical modelling synths on his site as well if you were curious to compare the quality: http://www.patchmanmusic.com/korgZ1.html"

Radikal Technologies Acellerator Ad

PDF here

via Shagghie aka the-high-sage

"The Accelerator is a polyphonic Synthesizer with eight powerful subtractive voices. Each voice consists of three oscillators, two multimode filters, 6 envelope generators, three voice LFOs and one section LFO. An additional noise source with independent multimode filtering and variable signal routing has been added for more sonic flexibility. A very nice balanced lightweighted keyboard with 61 keys, keyboard split option, aftertouch and velocity sensitivity completes the new synthesizer.
The Accelerator is perfectly prepared for your Live performances. A lot of synthesizers nowadays do not offer direct patch selection anymore. Instead of using direct access push buttons you have to dial in the desired patch and press enter. The Accelerator makes sound selection instantly available at your fingertips with dedicated patch select buttons. Furthermore, the unique program chain feature allows for programming a chain of programs that selects the correct patch automatically for you.
Another stunning new feature is the the built in 3D sensor. Movements of the keyboard are converted into Modulation data. This brilliant addition allows for controlling parameters like pitch, the filter frequency or modulation depths by lifting up or shaking the keyboard.
Do you love step sequencers and arpeggiators? The Accelerator would not be a Radikal synthesizer if we did not integrate some sequencing goodies. You can enter some notes into the step sequencer, transpose the sequences with the left hand while performing a solo at the upper end of the split keyboard.
The powerful warm and crispy sound of this new synthesizer flagship will become the center of your keyboard setup. If you would like expand the Accelerator‘s sonic power even more you can get additional voices with our DSP expansion module. The DSP expansion does not only add extra polyphony to the Accelerator - you will also be able to use up to eight independent synthesizer sounds at a time with the integrated multimode feature.
- 3 oscillators with sweepable waveforms, time linearity modulation, phasemodulation, ringmodulation between Oszillator 2+3
- oscillator synchronisation - 6 envelope generators - 4 LFOs (3 voice, 1p art LFO) - noise with noise filter (multimode filter 12 / 24 dB) - independent amp EG for noise - 2 multimodefilter per voice - LP, HP, BP and
Notch with 12/24 dB per filter switchable - independent oscillator to filter feeds - serial and parallel filter configurations - 8 voices (expandable per DSP upgrade) - categorized randomize sound function
- monochrome graphic display with RGB backlight - modulationmatrix - 2 FX - arpeggiator
- step sequencer - split, dual, single and performance mode - 3D positioning sensor for parameter control - 61 lightweighted keys with channel aftertouch - 512 sound memories - floating point for enhanced dynamic range - expression pedal input - footswitch input - USB (USB MIDI class device) - two external inputs - two outputs - MIDI In, Out, Thru - headphones output

Rare Italian Preset Drum Machine by Gisman

via Davide:

"I think this is a pretty rare preset drum machine manufactured by Gisman (I've heard they were a brand of the more famous LOGAN). It is a full analog preset drum machine (imagine 1982) with some nice patterns and the always loved ultra cheesy analog breath. I didn't find any occurence of this on the internet apart for a twin set on ebay italy (still on sale, i think) exactly from my area... It uses a pretty annoying (as it is missing!) dual pedal to start/stop and fill-in. I did some wiring on a TRS jack to make it start :)"

Machine – An Elektron-Users community production - Benefit Album

machine video preview from t IB on Vimeo.

Release Date: 9/17/2010
Machine is a unique compilation album and collaborative effort, produced by volunteers from within the Elektron-Users.com online community. All proceeds of the album will be donated to the world wildlife fund.

The album consists of 15 inspiring tracks of contemporary electronic music, crafted by artists from all corners of the world. The tracks and artists are united by an interpretation of the concept of machine, and the loud and proud use of Elektron musical instruments. The love of Elektron’s instruments has been a primary inspiration behind the album, and what united the Elektron-Users community to begin with.

Machine - a single word and concept that has guided the imagination of electronic mu-sicians for decades: one word that has captured the attention of electronic music mak-ers, from the early pioneers to the electronic luminaries of today. As relevant as ever, we have chosen this concept to provide a starting point for the Machine compilation album. The compilation seeks to investigate various aspects of this term, and bring some new interpretations to the table.

Machine is the second compilation crafted by the Elektron-Users community, and we hope it will bring as much joy as our first compilation, the 45 tribute did.

13. Syl Kougaï - Atoll Mécanique Swing
14. Indigo Fire & Johnathon Doe - End of Line
15. Microluv - Monsoon Dream

The compilation consists primarily of electronic music but it isn't specific to any sub-genre.

Project History: The project grew out of a thread at Elektron-Users in which a number of users expressed interest in a musical collaboration on a more public and broad scale. Our community is comprised of many creative individuals of varied discipline, from professional musicians, software and hardware develop-ers, to visual artists and educators. The possibility of drawing from within that talent pool to create a musical product that would represent the richness and personality of our community while laying a serious and modern slice of electronic music on the world was too ripe to ignore and thus, Machine was born.

Song Selection: From the more than 70 tracks submitted by the community for consideration, a hand-picked music selection committee narrowed them down to the 15 tracks you will find on the Machine album. The tracks were evaluated on their musical integrity and their loud-and-proud use of Elektron instruments. Considerations were also made for collaborative efforts and meaningful musical exploration of the Machine concept.

Name Significance: The Machine concept, as project participants have come to understand it, can be read in depth in the accompanying digital liner notes and on the website at www.machine-project.com

About Elektron Music Machines: (taken from http://www.elektron.se/company)
We are Elektron. Our aim is to pioneer the development of electronic instruments by creating innovative, user friendly and magic sound sources. We have been in business since 1998 and are constantly moving forward. The sky is the limit.

The ambition
Making music should be fun. That is why our instruments are designed the way they are. They are made to encourage creativity and exploration. But functionality is not the only thing that is important to us. We want to create beautiful machines, perfect fusions of technology and aesthetics. An Elektron machine should offer the superior experience only a lovingly crafted piece of hardware can provide.

The team
The Elektron team possesses a wide range of competences. Our skills include electron-ic engineering, hardware and software programming, journalism, graphic design, inter-action design and music industry experience. More or less all of us are musicians. This makes us a dynamic company with a firm grasp of all aspects of product development. We know what it takes to make good machines.

The community
Our instruments can be heard on everything from underground releases to platinum selling albums. Needless to say, we are very proud of our user base. User initiatives like the Elektron-users forum, where people come together to discuss electronic music in general and Elektron machines in particular, make us extra proud. We are glad to be a part of a movement with an inviting and creative atmosphere.

microKORG XL Patch Share Web App

via Shannon:

"I recently released a new web-app and thought you might be interested. This one is a patch sharing tool for the microKORG XL. You just plug in your XL and visit:

http://patches.remixia.com

You can search, click on a patch and have it instantly live on your XL. It is only works for the XL at the moment but in principle this would work with any synth that supports midi patch dumping. It's still a bit rough around the edges but should be usable."

Electronica EM-04

via this auction

"Electronica EM - 04. There is a one master oscillator in the instrument. Due to this oscillator a possibility of instrument's detuning in the process of operation is eliminated. This generator shifts a pitch of the instrument on an octave, "slalom-effect" and refines the tuning +/- 1/4. Because of split of the manual into 2 sections, the volume of each part may be adjusted.

Crumar Stratus polyphonic synthesizer organ hybrid

via this auction
"It's a 2 oscillator 6 note polyphonic analog synth that uses the same chips as the most sought after analog polysynths. There's also an organ section with 4 drawbars to determine volumes of each of 4 octaves. Warm filter. The LFO can do FM, wah or tremolo. The LFO section also has adjustable slope and delay. There's a button that causes the LFO to automatically do 1 octave square wave pitch modulation. The oscillator glide can be set to single or multi trigger. There's an oscillator pitch envelope as well. Otherwise, its a really cool, nice sounding synth."

the jerkster vs mankato vs bindubba5

YouTube via cirtcele | September 17, 2010

"Warning - This vid has some flashing lights in it, if watching Pokemon makes you foam at the mouth and lose control of your bodily functions, you probably should not watch this. The flashing is caused by glitchy beta version FX software i was using....which i totally love.

This patch starts simply with bindubba5 driving a VCO, to give an idea of the basic pattern. After that the VCO Tri out is plugged into the Mankato VCF and the jerkster is connected to the Makato's Cv input.
Apart from slowing down the main clock, only the pots on the Jerkster are adjusted during recording. Please forgive my obvious lack of musical talent and appreciate the wide range of sounds and obnoxiousness you can get from simply tweaking the jerkster."
